Can YOU max out every game?

I'm getting to the point where I'm not able to. 1680x1050 with a 4870x2 and a q6600 at 3.4Ghz. I suppose the card is old a long time now so this performance is to be expected. Right? Mafia 2 would average 22fps on the benchmark (fine for most of it and then would go down to 18fps or so in the firey bits of the demo level.

Your cpu is bottlenecking that card. I had a 4870X2 with a Q6700 @ 3.4ghz and my card was bottlenecked at that speed. It wasnt a huge bottle neck but it was there. The 4870X2 is still a kick arse card and can max out most games.

As for mafia 2 the x-fire profiles are broken, at least that is what I have read. :)

I thought the Q6700 is a very capable cpu and will last a few more years!

It is a good cpu but unless you have a clock speed of around 3.6-3.7ghz a dual gpu card like a 4870X2 will be bottlenecked. Dual GPU setups need more throughput than single GPU setups.

The easy way to find out if your card is being bottlenecked by your cpu is to run vantage and note down the GPU score. If the GPU score rises when you overclock your cpu then your gpu is being bottlenecked. If your GPU score stays the same when you overclock the cpu then your GPU isnt being bottlenecked. :)

Possibly, although never tried every game so I could not be definitive on that.
I can run everything I play / care about (23" monitor) so that's fine and if I cant I will upgrade like I always do.
As for WOW or GTA4 they both depend on processors so if people struggle its not their cards its like they stated the game is very poorly ported form console. Always find this strange as all games are written on P.C's these days :XD

Written on pc for the xbox stripped down os. Run it with windows in the background and it gets tied up allocating resources unless they clever I guess plus the pc version looked better

Try a program called gamebooster if you are struggling, just double click before a game and it'll shut all the windows bloatware services like file and print sharing obviously not needed during a game

Unfortunately I have dual core so everything I have runs badly now or only good sometimes. Even bf2 mods struggle on a 4870, I think thats because its over stressed by old dx code

I have a 19inch LCD that has a native of 1360x768 (yes its ancient!) the plus side is I can run most (except Crysis which I don't have anyway) at max with high AA.

GTX260 896MB & e5300 @3.46Ghz. 2GB DDR2 667.

a lot of friends are buying new large monitors and then finding to game they have to dig out the old one!

To be honest with an i5, 4GB RAM Sapphire ATI 5850 setup I cannot max WoW in all areas. Not talking Dalaran either, sometimes having the shadows on max just destroys your fps almost no matter what the system.

And oh yeah, the gaming rig is not the best of the best, but most people still hold WoW as something that does not require a lot of gfx power. This is true, but a packed server, everything set to Ultra and a heavily modded UI still takes its toll.

I have been able to - however the last year has brought some games out where I have to reduce the settings - this makes me sad :( May need to upgrade/build a new system soon :D

I play most of my games on low :(
When my mate complained that he could only play star craft 2 on High and not Ultra I punched him.
But when I can afford my new beast of a computer ...

No,

I only upgrade when I can't play new games by Valve at a decent fps

Currently, pc is a q6600, 4gb, gtx260
