Canadian Grand Prix 2011, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve - Race 7/19

Anyone else have the picture and sound break up a few times during Qually? As it wasn't enough to trigger 'No Signal' I'm guessing (read hoping!) it was at their end not mine.

BBC HD on Freesat BTW.

Yeh I had that on Freeview. At least it wasn't as bad for me as it was watching the BTCC on ITV4 last weekend. That was borderline unwatchable, had constant picture and sound breakups and stutter and general low quality.

Yep I had that.

Ah not just me then, good good :). I had it cut out on Have I Got News For You the other day - came up with 'No Signal'. I legged it down to the other end of the house and saw out the window a pigeon sat on the LNB arm of my dish :mad:.

Got some breaking up here (also Freesat), but no pigeons :p

Gutted the tyres are lasting so long at this race. I wanted a 3 or 4 stopper. Bah! I'll take rain now though, hell I will take a safety car or Alonso leading over another pole to flag finish.

I think Ferrari are our best chance for a non-Vettel victory tomorrow. Out of interest, would Massa be on pole now if he'd kept to the right like Brundle kept suggesting, and like Vettel and Alonso did? It seemed to make a noticeable difference.

I think mclaren have had another strategy fail....again why take the gamble I think HAM could have taken pole here or at least front row. I'm guessing from the relative pace of the teams Ferrari have gone for a dry set up and the bulls have gone somewhere in the middle.

Also good to see DiResta out-qualify sutil again, on a track hes never been to hes got some serious pace

I think he was obsessed with keeping to the right!

I'm quite liking Di Resta, could be a good one for the future when he gets into a better team and he comes across well in the interviews too.

Autosport article on the off-throttle diffuser ban.

Hmmm, article 3.15?

3.15 Aerodynamic influence :
With the exception of the driver adjustable bodywork described in Article 3.18 (in addition to minimal parts solely associated with its actuation) and the ducts described in Article 11.4, any specific part of the car influencing its aerodynamic performance :

- must comply with the rules relating to bodywork ;

- must be rigidly secured to the entirely sprung part of the car (rigidly secured means not having any degree of freedom) ;

- must remain immobile in relation to the sprung part of the car.

Any device or construction that is designed to bridge the gap between the sprung part of the car and the ground is prohibited under all circumstances.

No part having an aerodynamic influence and no part of the bodywork, with the exception of the skid block in 3.13 above, may under any circumstances be located below the reference plane.

With the exception of the parts necessary for the adjustment described in Article 3.18, any car system, device or procedure which uses, or is suspected of using, driver movement as a means of altering the aerodynamic characteristics of the car is prohibited.

Can't see anything there that covers the exhausts.

Another Di Resta fan here :) Seems a decent guy and his driving has been brilliant in his first year so far. Sutil is being made to look like the rookie if you ask me.

Di Resta 1.1s *on average* faster than Sutil (link)

You can't argue with that :)

It's the last line:

driver movement as a means of altering the aerodynamic characteristics of the car is prohibited.

When the driver takes his foot off the accelerator (driver movement) the system starts blowing the exhaust, which alters the aerodynamic characteristics of the car.

Race Prediction
For me, providing there are no unexpected/crazy goings on, I think Hamilton and Alonso will finish in the top 2 positions.

RBR usually go slower in the races. The fact that they are barely ahead now, would suggest that in the race, RBR, for the first time in a very long time, will not have the fastest car (in race trim). This means that if Vettel wants to win the race, he will have to outperform the likes of Alonso and Hamilton, using skill and not relying entirely on his (super) car. Somehow, I just can't see him doing this.

Last week, I stated that Vettel will not have it all his own way. Had there not been a red flag, I may have been proved right, but unfortunately, the red flag robbed us of some exciting closing laps.

This time, I Vettel is even more vulnerable and based the above, my predictions:

1. Alonso
2. Hamilton
3. Vettel (or Button)

Rain
Some people are hoping for rain, to make the race more exciting/unpredictable. I can't see why we need rain any more. In years gone by, F1 was a procession, with little overtaking (Hamilton, excepted). In 2011, overtaking is no longer a problem and there is now plenty of excitement during the race, without needing rain to add to the unpredictability. Every race is now difficult to predict until the chequered flag has fallen, so I really can't see any point to have a wet track.
