Canadian Grand Prix 2011, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve - Race 7/19

Rain
Some people are hoping for rain, to make the race more exciting/unpredictable. I can't see why we need rain any more. In years gone by, F1 was a procession, with little overtaking (Hamilton, excepted). In 2011, overtaking is no longer a problem and there is now plenty of excitement during the race, without needing rain to add to the unpredictability. Every race is now difficult to predict until the chequered flag has fallen, so I really can't see any point to have a wet track.

I want rain because they disable DRS then.

I think were forgetting how good a start the Ferraris normally get. Hamiltons only chance of a podium finish is to drive like he always does and blank out the stewards past decisions. I doubt he knows any other way to drive anyway.

I want rain because it's a different environment to test the driver's strengths on a wet track. Watching Lewis Hamilton dominate Silverstone 08 in the rain is what got me into F1.

Or if a yellow flag situation occurs and he's chasing Vettel in 2nd and the marshalls all abouts to wave their flags run a little bit and fall over, excusing Lewis for not noticing the yellow flags and overtaking Vettel to gain first place and win. Could happen :D

Just noticed the times are off for Sunday AH2.

Race time is correct, but the Forum is off by an hour and highlights are at 1.10am.

Hope we have a good race tomorrow, I'm also hoping for a bit of weather as I really dislike DRS.

sorry if Ive missed any lengthy discussions on this - has anyone else been having problems the last few races getting the forum on the red button?

First few I accessed ok via my tv and everything was ok - but last few I keep on getting " sorry this service is temporarily unavailable - please try again later" on both HD and SD channels - anything else on the red button works perfectly its literally the F1 that doesnt work anymore

(Ive tried more technical posts re hardware Im using, but as all other red button usage works well, it seems program specific)

( I know I can watch it on the web, but that sometimes isnt convenient)

Ok, so I missed qualifying because of a party. :(

But it seems that Red Bull have gone for a mixed wet/dry setup, ferrari have gone for dry (?) and mclaren more for the wet and atm it seems more likely that it will rain...?

In which case it could be an interesting race! :)

I have trouble getting it too, what I do now is totally forget about it then watch it on iPlayer later on :p

i dont think button was telling the whole truth about their wing being more biased for a wet race.

Button or Whitmarsh?

Button said they didn't have different setups for different conditions. Whitmarsh said they couldn't ignore the 70% rain prediction and had the car set up for the wet, reducing their maximum straight-line speed which was affecting qualifying.

Maybe Button thought it was a team secret and so wasn't making a big deal about it or maybe Whitmarsh was getting his excuses in early.

If it's the former, then I can only hope for rain and hope that the 'wet wing' makes a considerable difference.

If it's the latter then it's very disappointing that they seem to have been overtaken by Ferrari and haven't closed the gap to RBR.

sunama, I agree with you that so far this season we haven't needed a wet race to make things exciting. I just want it to rain to see whether McLaren really do have a trick up their sleeve or not.

i want it to rain because we havent had a wet race yet and we dont no what the wet weather tires are like.

am i right in thinking that there is no intermediate tire now? just a wet and a slick? im sure i heard that somewhere.

it would also be good to see what mclaren can really do here and ofcourse hamilton win :)

Nope there's still an intermediate last time I checked.

Think the wet tyres and blue and green iirc.

The McLaren result was expected TBH. Their DRS is pretty much confirmed now to be crap compared to RBR / Ferrari / Mercedes. It doesn't shed enough drag on the long Canadian straights.

If McLaren could sort out their DRS to be as good as their rivals they'd have a winning car. Problem is I suspect the whole DRS thing is tightly integrated with the majority of the rear end aero design! So not an easy task to change it now...

Snag is with Mclaren's supposedly bigger 'wet' wing is how much (if) they've had to shorten 7th gear, if it's dry they're going to have problems on the straights, both being passed and trying to pass.

I thought hamliton said they had a long 7th gear which would help when in a toe? I know one of the onboards with lewis i thought he'd backed off along the final straight as the engine didn't sound like it was near the top end bouncing off the limiter as almost everyone elses was, yet he crossed the line just 2 tenths off whoever was fastest at the time.

My moneys on alonso for getting into the first corner first.
