I suspect this is why Hamilton got closer and closer to Russell through qualy as the track dried. Hopefully this will set up Lewis well for the race today.

The track was clearly completely wrt in places. And there was no time to get the tyres up to temperature. Had it been a session with more time maybe. But there was no way that track was going to be ready by the flag.

Was a bit of a nonsense call the more i think about it.

With Perez and Leclerc out, and him having the set up for a wet qualy, he more than likely would have got third or fourth staying on intermediates.

The Merc would stand no chance against Max and Sainz come race day, so realistically, even if he got pole, he is finishing third at best (save for any dramas) anyway.

Basically he risked binning the car for no real benefit, even if he did get pole (other than the stat of having a pole i guess).

Agreed it was a dumb call imo.

Hardly like he was in a Williams or Aston throwing a Hail Mary to try fluke a rare near the front start. He's in the third best car and 2 of the front 2 cars were out. All he had to do was follow everyone else and he'd have probably been row 2 at very worst (as the teammate he was ahead of all weekend currently is).

The risk/reward wasn't anywhere near worthwhile.
 
Perez pit radio - Ok Check, so patience. It's going to be a long race, but yeah, stay disciplined. It'll come to us. Save the tyre, save the brakes for when we need it, build that margin. Make it count when we do.


Save the tyres and brakes, but build a margin? That'll be impressive.
