Canon 7D, 18-85 f3.5-5.6 IS USM, 18-135 f3.5-5.6 IS USM infos

Are they getting rid of the xxD range then and just sticking to xxxxD, xxxD and xD?
I can only see that being pointless personally. There would be a massive gap!

Correct me if I'm wrong here:

XXXXD - Occasional use, not serious
XXXD - Entry level DSLR for genuine interest and wanting to start somewhere
XXD - Amateur/Semi Pro usage
XD - Professional.

Take out the XXD and you lose anything for your semi pros to use :p

I think people are underestimating the sheer spec of this camera. It's got dual digic 4 (you only get dual processors on the 1 series), 19 point AF (essentially the current 1D autofocus without the extra assist points), 63 zone metering like the 1D, Dual memory card slots like the 1D, 8FPS so is as fast as a 1D mkII, 100% viewfinder, you'd expect the 5D II weather sealing too. It is, in essence, a pro camera, regardless of sensor size.

There will be a 60D, it will probably be an incremental upgrade to the 50D. It wont have the AF, it wont have dual digic, it wont have the metering, dual memory card slots, the weather sealing and most importantly it wont have the price tag of the 7D. I'm fully expecting the 7D to have an RRP of £1999.

But the 5D2 is barely any higher than that (when your talking that much money!) surely a lot of people would go, "Well if it's that much I might as well go full frame and get the 5d2"

Unless this is better specced than a 5d2? (I don't know the ins and outs! sorry!)

Well it's a totally different type of camera aimed at sports and wildlife photographers, so it has the newer, faster auto-focus (if we're honest, the AF on the 5D II is shocking for a camera with that price tag, it seems no better than my 10D), 8fps vs the 4fps of the 5D, crop factor which is useful for sports and birding types, improved metering.

It's aimed at a different market where AF speed and FPS count for a lot. That's why I think it will only be a little bit cheaper than the 5D.

If it is all true then it is basically a 1DMK4 in disguise and the Nikon D300 is done for really in terms of competition in the cropped sensor market.

I think it is going to be significantly more expensive than the D300 and arguably not that much better it terms of raw spec. D300 is already 8FPS with grip and has D3 autofocus?

The interesting thing to see will be the new technology Canon have used to make 18MP useable in an APS-C sensor (if it turns out to be APS-C). Especially with an advertised 6400 ISO, that would make H1 12800 and H2 25600. One of the benefits of dual digic 4 is that they will be able to run to pretty hardcore noise reduction algorithms to reduce noise at high ISO. However, you can't recreate detail that was never captured in the first place which is the main worry with an 18MP APS-C sensor. The pixel pitch becomes so small that the ability of each pixel to capture enough light is reduced.

If it is APS-H, then awesome. If not, then I hope there is a new sensor design (foveon or otherwise) that allows them to utilise the high MP count.

To put it in perspective, the 50D at 15MP becomes difraction limited at around F/7.6 and the 5D MKII around F/10. This would mean that you would need to shoot pretty wide open on a 7D to get the maximum detail out of the 18MP sensor.

And I wouldn't really consider it be a 1D mkIV in disguise because the next generation 1D is likely to skip digic 4 and use a digic 5 processor and the rest of the 7D features seem to be lifted from the current 1D.

I've been watching the rumours about the 7D for a while now, if it indeed came out with 18MP, Digic IV, 8fps, 19 AF cross type and 1.6x crop it could well be my next camera! I'd miss the 1D build quality and form factor but a 1D-esque AF system with a 1.6x crop really works well for what I do.

18MP is a bit worrying though, it's going to need a really good buffer to be able to flush files that big through when shooting 8fps. Although, sRAW maybe another option.

It's got dual digic 4 so will cope perfectly fine really.

As for the 40D being 7.8FPS, I keep mentioning this yet people are still surprised as if it was never mentioned and shown before!

hmmm, well ive got a 40d and a 30d, 30d is 5 fps and 40d meant to be 6.3, the 40d does seem a lot lot faster than a 30d.

Seems I'm wrong on two counts. Looks like it has still got a master flash control (awesome, i'm chuffed about that) and it coming out a lot cheaper then I thought.

Specs:

* 18M APS-C CMOS
* Dual DiGiC 4, 14bit
* 8fps, 94 large fine jpegs or 15 RAWs
* 19 points cross type AF sensor. Center AF point uses cross plus X type AF sensor
* ISO 100-6400, extend to 12800
* 100% coverage, 1.0x opitcal viewfinder with smart information display. Digital gradiometer provided
* 3.0inch LCD, 920,000 dot
* New iFCL metering system, brightness and color
* 150,000 shutter life cycle
* internal e-ttl flash control

That's from the second image in this thread.

We've been sent some prices [thanks] $1699 and 1299 Euros - no UK price yet

So expect around £1200-1400? Absolute bargain if that's the case. Sign me up.

It seems like the two leaked images, the close up of the badge and the one of the top plate were genuine.

Hopefully the image quality stacks up because it looks like it could be a cracking camera.

If this is for real (it's supposed to be announced in Stockholm on Tuesday), I don't think it will replace the 50D. I suspect the 60D will follow, but at a lower price point. The 7D would have to be something like an APS-C version of the 5D Mk II.

Bummer: I only recently bought my 50D! :(

Oh, and those lenses: I'm guessing they're not of the same standard as the 17-55mm, 17-85mm, etc., as they don't have the gold ring of USM.
