Canon 7D mk2 Thread

Yeah I definitely said for me.
1000 on better AF vs a new lens really. That is the choice for me.
Had it got a swivel screen instead of GPS I'd be more for it.

blury unfocused shots can kill a perfect imagine.

Loss of IQ wont.

a none blury image trumps an image that has good IQ!!! You can have the best IQ in a image but that image will be ruined with a blury pic!

I agree.
I've definitely decided on 70d (probably a used one off someone reliable)
Should be half price of 7d but it's as much for articulating screen as price.

The new AF is going down really well, we're still in the "new gear" period though :D

The jpeg engine looks to be better, I don't really shoot jpeg though (brings back bad memories of shooting kids footy tournaments!). As soon as the LR update is out I'll grab the RAW files and have a look.

More positive reports on the AF, from 1D4 and 1DX users. Better than the 1D4 and not a lot different to the 1DX, which sounds pretty good!

On the high ISO front, I'm still waiting on the Adobe updates. The noise does look finer, it's being called film like (just like the original 7D was!), and does look nicer than the 7D. I'm not seeing any shots yet that look vastly better, it's obviously still early days though :)

I'm watching out for what Nikon are going to do. If they release a comparable D400 (or whatever), it's likely to have a nicer sensor. A D750 and D400 setup would be great. I haven't completely discounted a 1 camera setup with a D810 either. I'll probably just get a 7D2 (or 1D4) though, as I just can't be bothered with the hassle of selling all my gear

Yeah saw that today :E looks like my housemate is willing to buy my 70d since I'm selling it quite cheap due to the damage to the touchscreen housing but I might get it fixed first or at least find out how much repairs are.

Maybe I can sell it for more and that will knock off more of my 7d2 price :D

I'd love a 5d3 but for what I do, the 7d2 just works out better so if I upgrade it'll be that... Unless someone gives me a 1Dx :D

Sorry but I think you're contradicting yourself. If the 7D2 is a better camera for your needs than a 5D3 then I can't see how a 1DX would be better still.

The 1DX is far more akin to a 5D3 than a 7D2.

Other than the fact that the 1dx is full frame, how is it more akin to the 5d3? The 1dx is a sports, action and wildlife camera and so is the 7d2...

When I say I wouldn't mind a 5d3, I mean as well as my 70d or a 7d2. It wouldn't fill all my needs but it would be nice to have :)

DXOmark have their 7DMK2 sensor analysis up. Slight improvement over the original in terms of high ISO improvement (about 1/3rd of a stop), but no change at all in terms of Dynamic range or colour depth which is disappointing. Still a long way behind Sony, Nikon, Toshiba, Aptina and Samsung sensors in regards DR and colour depth but high ISO is catching up.

To be fair at higher ISO the sensor does quite well, which again points out the biggest issue is Canon's ADC which affects the noise floor. Being a sports camera then high ISO usage is going to be common so the poor overall sensor performance is probably less of an issue than the headlines would indicate.

What is kind of ironic is the Canon G7X which uses a sony 1inch sensor actually get better DR and colour depth at base ISO. The sensor despite being half the size provides twice the DR! Also interesting is the G7X outperforms the latest sony RX100 so either sony has done more tweaks or Canon has tweaked the sensor themselves.

Not sure why you're classing the 1DX as a "sports, action & wildlife" camera to be honest. Personally I think the days of pigeon-holing cameras like that are over now. There are vast numbers of photographers using the 1DX for all manner of wedding, portrait & landscape photography.

The 1DX is the ultimate Canon body for anyone who doesn't need the crop factor of an APS-C sensor. If you do need the crop then the 7D2 is the best option, otherwise the 1DX is a better bet. If anything, what you call "sports, action & wildlife" photography is more likely to be the type of shooting that would benefit from the crop factor and thus the 1DX may actually be less suited than the 7D2.

You're right in that I was saying the 1DX is more akin to the 5D3 than the 7D2 simply because they're both full frame. Yes, there are features the 1DX shares with the 5D3 and features it shares with the 7D2 but, for me personally, the sensor format "defines" a camera more than any other feature so the fact that the 5D3 and 1DX are both full frame makes them far more "similar" than the 1DX and 7D2.

I guess it all depends on personal priorities. You've said the 7D2 is the best option for you right now but the question is why you feel this way. If it's because the crop factor gives you more reach for wildlife and so forth then doesn't that rule out the 1DX as a future upgrade path? If the 1DX is a viable future path then you're effectively saying that the crop factor isn't the "be all and end all", in which case why not move to full frame and side-step the 7D2 altogether.

Basically, I'd take a 5D3 over a 7D2 any day of the week. Yes, the 7D2 may have slightly better AF, a higher frame rate and other features which the 5D3 lacks but for me none of that would matter. Unless I actually needed the crop factor I'd go full frame every time :)

Not sure why people would buy a 1Dx to do only landscape and weddings unless they've got plenty of cash and then I guess they might as well... Like you say, it's the ultimate Canon camera

To me the 1Dx is a sports/action camera because of the features that it has like the great AF and silly fast FPS. That's not to say you can't use it for anything else but I'm not sure people would upgrade from a 5d3 to a 1Dx for better IQ or a builtin battery grip and an RJ45 port? :E

The 1Dx can do everything but at a price whereas the 5d3 does all the portrait/people stuff just as well but at a lower price in my book?

For me the crop factor is convenient but isn't a factor that would stop me getting something like a 1Dx. The better resolution available from a FF sensor would let me crop a fair bit so I guess the difference might not be as much as it seems and I'd be able to take advantage of a lovely FF sensor.

7d2 will suit me well and it's cheaper so I'll 'make do' with that for a while lol.
