Captain Marvel (2019)

As for Ms Marvel reviews, why are people posting critic reviews like they actually mean anything ?

Some of us trust a reviewer who has been around for 20/30 years+ more than a random Youtuber who needs to play to his audience to ensure he carries on getting paid by his Patreon followers.

I have a few 'go-to' critics, and though I don't always agree with them (that would be mental) I know that they can give me a good idea if I should bother watching something.

To be honest, if it's a Marvel movie I'm going to watch it at the cinema anyway and often don't read the review until after I've seen the movie.

It's fair to pull people up on confirmation bias. But Black Panther and Wonder Woman both scored very highly on Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes and were good superhero movies, no more. I imagine we're going to get a workmanlike film very nicely polished but over scored for all the usual virtue signalling reasons.

I will be watching this because of Avenger End Game otherwise I'd wait for the Sky. I hope it's better than I expect.

Regardless of bias one way or the other the reviews I have seen all touch on that the film is a feminist movie which is confirmed by the movie makers themselves and that Brie Larson is dull as dishwater.
Also I won’t forget the crap that comes out the woman’s mouth at seemingly every opportunity as part of the reason i enjoy a movie is if I like the lead actor.. plus it also seems like you’re not going to be missing anything by not watching it and then going to see endgame.

I've said in other threads that even the worst marvel movies are watchable

For me Iron Man 2 is really challenging to watch sometimes, the middle third is easily the worst thing in the MCU. The movie is basically saved by two action scenes that bookend the movie and ScrJo looking absolutely delicious

We don't really know that yet as didn't they say the current Endgame trailers all use footage from the first 20 minutes of Endgame. She could still play an important part.

She looked really wooden in the trailers and that got blown up into why "She didn't smile", no it's that she didn't show any emotion at all! And after the stupid things she said i was in two minds about watching it in the cinema. I have decided i will but i won'd be rushing to do so. When i do i'll give my unbias and totally honest opinon on this.
I'm invested in the MCU so I'll watch it like I have all the others, but I'm disappointed by the casting and attitude Larson has shown. I'm guessing Disney will be too.

Sadly it seems many people have already made their mind up and are looking for confirmation bias.

39 reviews and it's higher on metacritic than Ant Man, Iron Man 2 and 3, Thor, Thor: The Dark World and is currently the same score as Captain America: The First Avenger and Avengers: Age of Ultron and 1 behind Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2
No matter how hard you white knight her, she won't sleep with you. In fact if you ask for her number she will assume you're assaulting her, like that poor TSA guy.

What on earth has everyone got a beef with Brie Larson over? The quote about wanting to use her casting as a means to support women is hardly out of line?!

From what I can make out (in no particular order)

She doesn't smile enough in the promo pics/trailers/real life (despite the other Marvel promo's not really showing smiling characters, and her smiling seconds later in some real life pics)
She doesn't look like comic (which version?)
She complained about the audience (she didn't, she commented about how the vast bulk of the people doing interviews with her were white men)

I find it funny how many self confessed huge comic book/marvel movie fans on the internet are getting their knickers in a twist over imagined stuff in regards to the film, whilst my brother in law (who is an absolutely huge comic book fan*) and several friends who are almost as into them are all looking forward to this.

*He's been buying them for 30 years, ran a small comic book shop for a while as a side job, and still has thousands of comics from the 90's on (I would call him a huge comic book nerd, but he gets on well with women and has two kids and a life outside comic books).

Long story short - mostly her personality in Real Life.

Long story - people (myself included) thought she looked "bland/humourless" in the first trailer, she complained when this was pointed out, it turned into a "the fans hate women" bashing of the male fanbase, people pointed out multiple public speeches where she said things that could be seen as "anti-white male", she complained again when this this was pointed out, she still looked mostly "bland/humourless" during 2nd trailer (which was better than the first) and the press tour (not all of it TBF) was a PR disaster.

So more complex than Werewolf's more streamlined version but it covers most of the same stuff.

FWIW - What could have been Marvels "Wonder Woman" - a strong female lead from an actress new to the genre - took a nosedive when, unlike Gal Gadot (or Patty Smith), the lead actress came across as a very unlike-able person IRL to many of the fanbase so the fans left in their droves. Now the film, which could have used those lost fans to bump up box office figures, is getting meh reviews so it looks like they'll miss those fans more than fans will miss the film.

As much as I love the marvel movies, I won't be down the local cinema handing over £20 to watch this, and I hope that those who also disagree with people pushing political agendas and more importantly who clearly hates her audience which is statistically made up of mostly white men. Well the film deserves to nose dive for that reason alone.

Wonder Women gets a thumbs up from me, not only was it a good film, but Gal Gadot was fantastic in it. Brie Larson well, she's several flavours below vanilla in the blandness scale.

After TLJ and people practically giving up on life because a film didn't mee their standards, I fully expect plenty more pages on this thread. I can be a grumpy git at times but people really need to lighten up.

Spot on, Brie supporters are ignoring all of this and calling everyone "man-babies" on this, it's 2016 Ghostbusters all over again, yeah look how well that turned out

Here's the review from "white man-baby" Chris Stuckmann who Brie doesn't want his opinon on her movie :p:

Chris is usually spot on, i agree with him 90% of the time but you can see all of his criticism you can see in the trailer

I have to be honest, hand on heart, Gal Gadot won me over as WW. In BvS i was worried when she was announced as WW, as all the previous movies she's been in she was incredibly wooden and a bit of a skinny rake. She did OK in BvS but i was still worried as she didn't have a big part and i found it hard to understand her as when she talked it sounded like she was chewing marbles. In WW she looked so much better (She looked stunning) and her acting came along in leaps and bounds. And most importantly she played WW with so much heart i was willing to give her another go. And in JL she was easily the best part of the movie. I loved how she became the 'mother' of the group and was the glue keeping them together. At this point i realised she was a fantastic WW.

That's how you win people over. Taking the trolls and criticism on the chin, ignoring them and proving them wrong and not rising to the bait. Unfortunately Brie didn't learn these important lessons, all she had to do is say that she movie was for anyone who wants to see it and she'll do her best for the part and i would have been there opening weekend.

Take that back. The absolutely most pressing and serious issue in the world right now is the disturbing trend of women getting uppity and speaking their minds. Oh and not smiling enough.

Just clicked on this thread and all I can think is wtf is going on in this world. Does anything matter beyond “is the film good?”.

One thing I like is that it’s a relatively lean 2 hours 5 minutes. These superhero films have been really dragging it out.

Hope it’s fun :)
