*** Car Wash / Valet / Detailing Thread ***

I definitely see where you are coming from. Did a trial of the basic bits I had to do a hose wash over the weekend albeit a week after a pressure wash to see how efficient it was. It was quicker and more efficient when minimised the steps and got a good outcome still.

I notice you got the small bottle of all clean. Will that be diluted? Will it last a while? So used to have 5L BH Autofoam and Surfex HD and it seems that product would replace it. Also looking at the Garage Therapy line and rinseless but the DIY stuff just seems so much easier to understand and get a routine sorted.

I assume you won't be using any more than Rinseless, all clean or iron remover time to time on the wheels?

Ceramic gloss would then replace my Koch-Chemie Pw ProtectorWax but again can't make out if that bottle is enough? I was used to mixing 30ml into a 1 litre bottle and cover the cars with it but this seems spray panel and wipe over.

hi

the All-Clean I've not used yet, but its ready to use out of the bottle, and going my the founders, its diluted at 30:1
i currently use surfex HD, i dilute that into a spray bottle at 1:15 i think, but yes if your going the foam route, BH auto foam(or touchless) is the way to go

On the wheels, im hoping to just use Rinseless wash, if its caked on, then all clean i will use if needed
Iron remover if i need to decontaminate and re apply protection

The bottle of ceramic gloss, should last a long time, you only need a little, and it should last 4-6 months
you apply this on a foam pad and round and round you go , panel at a time

Clever detailing gurus............any idea what this is and how I can get rid of it? G21 M340i nearside rear shadowline door/window trim. Looks like chemical damage to me, maybe? Snow foam or wash etc allowed to bake on for longer than it should?

I use AG Polar Blast, Polar Wash and then usually finish off with Koch Chemie Protector Wax. I'm usually very careful about application and don't leave any of the products to dwell too long. And I always towel dry the car when I'm done, including those black trim parts. I've tried 3M Finesse-It on it and it didn't do much to remove it.

Try using water spot remover to remove the mineral deposits

I have some Isopropyl rubbing alcohol here, would that help or cause further damage?

I wouldn’t personally, as I’m not confident on the problem. If the plastic has chemical damage, IPA may dry it out further.

I’d be surprised if a good mechanical polish can’t get it out. Doing it by hand may not be enough though

Cheers, guys. I'll give it a go with a small DA polisher and see what happens.

Anyone know if that piece of trim can be removed and replaced, or is it an integral part of the door/window frame?

Sometimes a bit of heat can resolve that , failing that I've found quick detail spray removes/hides it.

[edit] - Ahh, I missed the 3M Finesse-It application..

My go to max cut compound by hand is the G3 Paint Renovator, it seems to do a stellar job at cutting by hand, some of the compounds are hopeless unless machine polishing, but from your description it sounds more than a mere surface stain.. You will need to slowly go more abrasive, even wet sanded, before the worse case of lacquer damage, in which case, a wrap might be cheaper..

If it's gloss black plastic trim, maybe Plast-Rx is worth a shot, that's going to cut and polish nicely..

Where are people generally buying car care products, is it from online suppliers or places like Halfords?
I have a local Halfords which is quick and convenient but just wondered how their product range and prices stack up against a dedicated care care product supplier?

Clean and shiny, but because their warehouse is near my office so I can collect (and typically spend more than I intended to…)

Thx guys, In2Detailing or Clean & Shiny it is for a few supplies.

I am thinking of going for the car wash method of using a microfibre mitt that is cleaned after each panel by either aggravating in a bucket of water with a grit removal plate in it, or rinsing the mitt clean with a hose. Followed by spraying a diluted car shampoo product on to the mitt for the next panel, rinse and repeat.....

For the above procedure, should I do some type of contactless pre-wash with a spray bottle followed by a hose or jet wash rinse? I have a few general spray bottles, pressurised and non pressurised and a Karcher 5 series jet wash.

My wish is to keep things as simple as possible, using spray bottles and the garden hose/jet wash I have rather than buy any new spraying kit or foam lances.
Finally, assuming my planned method is reasonable, would anyone please be able to recommend the washing products I need to buy along with a decent mitt and grit removal plate.

Any feedback most appreciated, value for money products preferred, it's just a car that goes on the road, not an ornament, all I wish to do is get a few basics in place to keep it clean rather than over the top concourse condition. I have some old traditional car wax I can use for a bit of winter protection after a wash, that will do for me.

Thx
Bintos
