Career in the Forces? (IT Related)

Mines are 5 weeks apart! But you now have the same PRTC as me.

I'll probably see you there, I'm the Scottish guy called Lewis

Awesome, At least I will sort of know someone at PRTC. :p

I've added you onto MSN.

Hi, I'm after some advice. I applied to the RAF as an IT guy last autumn, got through the aptitude test no problem, but failed on the first interview. My main problem was that I've basically been dossing for 2 years since leaving school, I dropped out of 2 college courses and didn't work all that time either, I know this is my fault. To rectify this I've had a part time job delivering pizzas for about 3 months now, and I'm starting an adult learning computer maintenance course next week, which hopefully will show I'm serious about the job.

Another problem is my extreme lack of things to put on the application form under clubs, activities during school etc. I really have NOTHING to put there, I'm guessing its to show how I well I can work in a team or whatever but its annoying how my interests all revolve around computers and I can't really put 'i like games' on the form. At the end of the interview the interviewer basically said I need things there, but I don't want to lie.

I really want to make something of myself and the RAF seems like a good route to go into IT, I'm going nowhere at the moment. To the guys in training or going into it, how did you get around the interview? :)

phil if you're clever enough to pass the aptitude test why havnt you thought of the obvious answer to your question.. actually join some clubs and volunteer for things?

Was the position a commisioned one you applied for? As you may be better off applying for none commisioned to start with to be honest, a lot of people seem to think they are good enough for commisioned entry but fall short by a long way, I realised this and decided I would apply for a commision in a few years, after some fun and experience.

ok, looking into RAF ATC at the moment, currently a navy ATC, the whole setup for the RAF seems better for ATCs, faster promotion from assistant to fully qualled ATC.
Is there anyone on here who has much experience with the RAF ATC branch, Im struggling getting to an AFCO due to current location and work commitments, Id like to know a little more about the RAF setup for the ATC branch, SNCO looks great to be honest, sounds like a more challenging job, the type Id like. Either way RAF ATCs seem to be better rewarded financially than naval ATCs.

Email in trust if anyone really wants to help me initially. Thanks.

Just applied earlier and came across this thread.

Gone for an officer position - Physical Education Officer.

Seemed the logical route with my degree and post grad qualifications in Sport Science, the job security and life has appealed for a long, long time though.

Fingers crossed I get in.

Well I passed my final interview on Monday :D And I start basic tomorrow down at Halton.

I have everything on the list for basic training and my train tickets are booked. (1st train from Manchester at 5:05am) :o

Its going to be the toughest and worst 9 weeks of my life, It's going to change me in ways I can't imagine. But I'm looking forward to it despite remaining nervous.

I've been trying to adjust my sleeping patterns but failing miserably.

Good luck!

My AFCO phoned me today and my final interview will be next week, with my start date still for April 15th.

How was the final interview? Were you just asked what you will be doing over the 9 weeks at Halton?

Alright matey.

I got a phonecall yesterday after 2pm saying "you do know you had your final interview today at 1pm dont you?"..

i promptly crapped my pants. My PRTC date was changed from feb 26th to March 12th and I was told my final interview would be after my prtc. Obviously she didnt rearrange my interview.

What would be the point in a final interview confirming I still wanna go ahead, even though Ive not even had a taste of things to come! :)

its all okay though, she said she would book a new interview after my PRTC.

scary times for us noobs!

The officer at my final interview basically was just making sure that I really wanted to go through with this.

The questions he asked was about my training @ Halton and Cosford and the stages involved, asked me to name some of the UK Flying bases I could be based to gain experience and overseas bases where I could be stationed in the future.

It only lasted around 10-15 minutes and was over before I knew it, it ended with him saying congratulations and him offering me a job in the R.A.F, He then handed me over to a Sergeant who explained and helped me fill out the paperwork which took around 2.5 hours. :p So be prepared to be there for awhile.

Yeah I agree that the final interview before PRTC is a little strange, 4 people in my room at PRTC last week had already had theirs!

Scary times indeed :p But PRTC was good and I'm looking forward to starting RTS now.

Thanks :)

10-15 minutes!? Good thing you mentioned them asking us about Cosford too, I never thought of that.

Did you get your service number?

The Flt Lt conducting the interviews spoke very quickly and after asking the Sergeant if most final interviews where over this quickly with him he said yes.

Anyway, I'm off to pack! How are your boots fitting? I've been polishing mine everyday. I think I have got lucky as mine don't seem to be rubbing at all yet.
