carling cup football thread 22-23 *spoilers*

I expected something more than I got (should have known better really) ! I have no issues with the "resting players" scenario (although how professional athletes can't play 2 games of football a week is beyond me), but we just didn't field a competative side. They weren't capable of winning, that's my issue.

I was only joking ;) I agree with you, if the team weren't even in with a chance of winning it's a slap in the face to the fans.

Newcastle's first team are far too prestigious for a stupid competition like the Carling Cup, what did you expect!?

The reason the Carling Cup isn't prestigious anymore is because of the top teams playing youngsters. If Arsenal (not just Arsenal, any of the top teams really) put out a proper team and won the competition then other teams would also put out a stronger teams, but at the moment it's a lump of crap.

Having said that, Newcastle will play the youth team in the FA Cup as well, just because promotion is more important.

Mascherano can be a right wee bitch when he wants to be. The good thing is that the referee didn't see it so he can be punished retrospectively.

Think fulham might be in for a battering tonight, rumour about no Dempsey, Hangeland, Nevland, and Konchesky carrying an injury...i think Etuhu is injured too :/

Moment of impact:

Mascherano must have one hell of an elbow on him for it to have hit Beckford's head. I'm not saying Beckford dived (like he did in the first half) but I think he was being a little opportunistic.

Thankfully the referee and FA saw sense for a change.

Sense?! Sense would have been a sending off for raising his arms and striking another player in the head. It's made worse that the ball was no where near (was it even in play?) Since when did you need to elbow somebody to get a red card?

He was wriggling free of Beckford, spun and caught him accidentally. Whatever way you look at it, it wasn't the monstrous crushing elbow it was made out to be. He didn't even hit him with an elbow as I mentioned.

A yellow card for carelessness would have probably been fair. A red card or subsequent 3 match ban would have been nonsense.

Paul Scholes saw red for swinging his arms at Alonso and not connecting. Mascherano should be done for intent as he swung his arms full well wanting to hit Beckford.

Carelessness my ass! The ball was nowhere near them.

You don't have to elbow people though to get a ban, just raise your hands. In the Arsenal game WBA got a player sent off for just palming Wilshere's face (coincidentally he did elbow Wilshere 5 seconds earlier but that wasn't the sending off offence as it was a mistake)
