Channel 4 - Skint

Saw this last night. Most depressing hour of television I've seen in a long time. Benefit's culture absoluteluy rife, 21 yr old girl already with 5 kids, layabout scroungers as far as the eye could see., petty criminals, crackheads...
Scunthrope tourist Board have got their work cut out after this...

We need a 2 child limit for child benefits if you want more than that get a jaab
if someone can't support their kids then give them to someone else who can and sterilise the parents.

Being serious they are the products of a dire system.

The problem the country faces is reforming that system, that will be difficult while political ideology comes before doing the right thing.

Sad thing is every human being is born a blank slate, some of these people via different upbringings may have been an amazing physicist or entrepreneur / inventor.

I don't think anyone is born stupid as such, they just fall into a cycle like this and make themselves stupid. Almost sort of like a learned helplessness.

I personally believe all human beings have untapped power in them, I really do.

Well said sir :)

There was that one 16yo girl with 1 child, that I actually felt quite sorry for. She was in a crap situation and knew it, and openly admitted that she couldn't control her anger.

She was the one living in the flat with her dropkick BF and the 36yo going on 50 crack addict.

She actually seemed like she would respond well to some help and guidance.

Yep, she was the one person in the whole documentary who didn't seem to be revelling in her situation. I did feel genuinely sorry for her.

Why is it that whenever I watch these programmes, the person on the telly box says...

"I don't have any money"

yet, they are sat there with a nice huge TV, an xbox 360 and games, lots of games. Hmmmm.

£1600 a month benefits + rent and council tax paid for her.
so thats the equivalent of a job earning about 32k per year (assuming £450 a month would cover her rent + council tax)

Wow. I do see why people do this.
Sat watching a 42/46 inch TV etc.

AT least the family with 7 kids were all huddled round a 14" portable with not enough sofas which at least made me think perhaps you don't have loads of money spare to waste

The problem with these shows is they cherry pick the worst examples to make good TV.

Would be interesting to see if any of them get their benefits re-assist though, as that couple with the massive telly and all the weans appear to have a great standard of life

This is the one that made me the most angry

"I've only £4" Where the hell did the money go??? Maybe the reason is because you decked the house out with nice sofas and a huge TV, the whole house look way too nice!

The £4 comment was stupid. You'd get well over £100 for the xbox and TV. If you were really down to £4 then you wouldn't even be using the electricity.

They were in a tight situation where they couldn't get the money that they were owed (by the system) but still put some perspective on it. They made a comment about there being no jobs but the bf seemed just to be very very lazy.

The "There are no jobs" excuse always riles me, because what they actually mean is "There are no jobs that I can roll out of my scratch as late as possible and walk around the corner to start". They expect their jobs to be "within the community" ie. next bloody door -- commuting is a completely alien concept to them.

After all, why bother getting up at the crack of dawn for a 30 minute bus ride to stack shelves somewhere for 9 hours, when you can lounge around and drink while being paid more? Many make more on benefits than they would making an honest wage due to diminished, or non-existant, skill sets. Yet they continue to mug their faces (and neighbours, ho ho!) and play the victim because they aren't handed a £60k work-from-home career with no effort on their part.

Yeah, I turned this off after about 15 minutes.

What really mad me angry about that couple was that on the calender they had marked out 'Pay Day'. In their minds that shows that they really do think they have 'earned' what they are given. There will be no helping them until that changes.

The 36 year old crack addict will not be with us much longer I think - she looked about 90.

Why do all these people have Staffordshire Bull Terriers too? They cannot even look after themselves so why get a vicious dog that they cannot look after too?! I bet if that 16 year old girl got her baby back the dog would rip it to pieces with jealousy.

I grew up on a council estate (our house was privately bought), there was only one or two problem families that had junk in their gardens, feral children roaming the streets and boy racer monstrosities like Citroen saxo's with fiberglass hanging off. They were mostly out of work, like the rest of the estate, but they were the only ones to live like chavs.

My mum and step dad always worked hard, yet some nights we'd sit in the dark because they had no money to put on the electric key or we'd have to eat at my Nan's house because we couldn't afford food that day, yet all the families with five kids and no jobs could afford multiple cars, sky tv and junk food. It made me sick growing up

People are not blank slates; on average, about 50% of variation in pretty much any human trait can be traced to genetic differences and a decent chunk of the rest of the variation can be attributed to differences in the intrauterine environment. None-the-less the impact of environment is colosal.

At least someone has a idea.

And the fact these people with negative traits are breeding at much higher rates is the bad thing.

It's like the knead to have more sprogs to get more cash, so they can continue to loaf about, never having to rise early and roll out of bed to earn any dough.

And they always look so crusty and half-baked from the weed they end up buying.
