Check Your 4090's 12vhpwr Connectors To Make Sure They are in Pristine Condition

Yep and as I thought the longer this went on it was user error, In all honesty I'm glad GN did this research and video to call out all other so called experts because as a user like myself when you hear techtubers like Igor and Jay just guessing and blaming Nvidia a lot of people would listen when the fact is I've seen some pics of some of these on this Reddit and you can clearly see a gap between the plug base and the connector tip.

We know no user likes to be blamed for the issue or because it happened to them but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest that the users that it has happened to they have tried to cover up their mistake or oversight by trying not to show that it wasn't connected properly.

It's not a dig at inexperienced users per say and the connector is stiff I know that from first hand experience but come on if you're really not that competent in connecting a cable together then you really shouldn't be going near this sort of equipment.

Look we all make mistakes I have in the past but experience has always taught make sure everything is plugged and seated to the best of your knowledge, There should not be any gap in any connector on the PC, You may get away with a PWM fan header not connected properly because of the low power but you're not going to get away with that at these sort of wattages.
I think this issue was always there on even the 8 pin PCIE connectors and maybe people don't plug them in properly but since it has such a ridiculously high safety margin, if you don't connect them all the way, the pins which do make contact can handle all the current. This connector does not have that safety margin.

While the Nvidia adaptor is now confirmed to not be the issue, it's still very badly made as it simply does not click on many GPUs like Zotac. Cablemod does very easily. Once you install the cablemod it actually looks very sleek in the case instead of looking at the cable kraken with 4x8pin.

Any issues you can point out from previous halo product releases?

So paying such a premium I should be expecting to be a beta tester?
Only 0.1% failed and that's the worst case scenario. Realistically it was 0.05%. If this was a beta test, I don't blame them for pushing out the final product. It would be impossible to materially improve the failure rate. 99.9% of users are plugging it in correctly.

How do you explain how these users who are incompetent to insert a connector correctly manage to do so with at least half a dozen other connectors and probably have done so with dozens if not hundreds of connectors?
The other connectors had a safety margin to account for user error. This one does not

Yeah I think so too. The issue that causes this connector to melt can in theory happen to the 8 pin as well but the 8 pin was designed with a lot of redundancy in mind and while we have seen 8 pin cables burn up before it's quite rare

Even brand new PCIE connectors are stiff but yes I agree they did have a more audible click although I know people that have also damaged their PSU's and motherboards through not connecting the 2 pin on the 6+8 pin properly which is also a ****** design in all honesty, I've had more trouble in tight spaces ensuring that crappy 2 pin connector was in properly haha.

I know they were initially like that because of older less powerful GPUs that only had 6 pins but to this day they still do not add extra cables in the boxes to support a fully moulded one piece 8 pin cable for those that need it.

Backwards compatibility issues at it's finest, I'll be honest I do prefer this new connector it's very neat although not with the bundled adaptor it's a total mess.

My Cablemod cable has finally shipped a few days ago so it will still be getting swapped out for aesthetics alone.

But yes it won't be the first time people don't connect cables properly, Even the 2 8 pin connectors at the top of the boards for the CPUs I've had trouble with because of the area they're in and on setting this Alder lake system I noticed a gap in the space like it wasn't connected properly so wasn't happy and didn't power it up for the first time until I checked it again and reseated it until I saw it was pretty much flush before powering on.

Yeah, I've had loads of occasions where those god awful split 4+4 or 6+2 connectors wouldn't go in properly, they are a complete ball ache compared with this new one.

At least this issue is getting plenty of press, so hopefully anyone getting one here on out should be aware they need to click it in properly. Just hope all the click bait sites update with the situation instead of peddling solder or X supplier over the actual problem.

I was blind nvidia fanboy and troll for suggesting failure rate was tiny 16cards in how many hundreds of thousands sold?

they are all going to burn they told me, couldn't possibly be people not plugging them in I must be a conspiracy theorist.

IDK how these people don't get banned from these threads when they post meme crap... yet I get banned from an NVidia thread for replying to some AMD fanboy saying atleast nvidia had a launch al AMD brought was paper plates.....

The 4090 is an absolute monster both in performance and size.

A vertical riser is essential and makes life a lot easier (although I had to "modify" my Lian Li O11D case slightly) even with this.

Corsair (specifically) and a couple of others are providing 600W PCIe 5.0 12VHPWR Type-4 PSU Power Cables that plug direct from GPU to the PSU (you don't need a new ATX 3.0 PCIe 5.0 compliant PSU).

So no more weird adapter with up to 4 cables.

They will all burn, wallets bro.

I think it's quite clear that this general connector design is just plain poor, it really shouldn't be an issue.
We shouldn't have this thread and deep analysis into the connector issues at all. It's just a power connector, it should be easy to connect and hard to damage.

people can fit a cpu cooler. but can't plug a cable in properly? and we blame the cable ?
remember toddler toys where you push the shape through a hole? :D did people stop buying them or something

It's a bad design. Here is the new design that we won't get.
