Chinese Grand Prix 2014, Shanghai - Race 4/19

i dont think any of the top teams would want button even if he was available.

Hes in the later stages of his career and there are good young drivers coming through, someone descent needs to take hulkenberg on imo

no he wasn't, Red Bull just made sure he wouldn't be competitive with Vettel after what happened in the 2010 season. Webber would soon be retiring and they obviously wanted to manufacture Vettel into Schumacher MK2 as the face of Red Bull.

It's obvious that for years Vettel's success has to a large extent been manufactured by a team who have been highly dominant, this year just further confirms suspicions. All you'd need to do is reduce Webber's horsepower by a small amount to get him out of the way, it's a lot harder to do that sort of thing now with fuel flow monitoring.

i dunno, i just dont believe it that they would.

On JB moving, i dont see any better teams wanting him, could possibly chance a side step but ferarri, merc, RBR wouldnt want him IMO

I have always wondered what buttons career would have been like if he had not spent so many years at a mid table team just bringing the car home, I wondered if it had affected his racing mentality?

Despite whinging about balance in the past he has been able to overcome issues and drive fantastically to win races (Canada in the wet a few years back springs to mind).

Personally I think that if he was in the Merc he would be closer to Hamilton than Rosberg is. I don't mind seeing Lewis win this year, I just wish he wasn't wearing such ridiculous earrings all the time, he is supposed to be a sportsman not a rapper...

You know, despite all that is said about Canada 2011, I'm not convinced it was quite as legendary for Button as it is often made out. I think the McLaren, for whatever reason, was simply in another league in the wet that day. Remember that - before he managed to drive into his own teammate - Lewis was faster still, easily closing on Button and going way faster than any of the other cars. Button certainly drove a great race in difficult conditions but I think much of the sheer scale of his performance came down to a car that was simply better than anyone else's in those conditions. Had Lewis shown a little more caution that day he would have walked away from Button and we'd be talking about how Lewis destroyed the field in Canada instead.

I suspect next year McLaren will dominate as much as Merc have this year.

Honda have had chance to witness what the different PU designs are and will have the car balanced to suit their PU.

I doubt that the value of the impressions of other people's PUs will be as valuable as the experience that a year of working with a power unit to the teams. I have high confidence in Honda to deliver a mighty power unit and I hope it can drive a McLaren revival but I'll be astonished if it gives them Merc-like dominance.

As much of a Jenson fan as i am, he's not going to get any quicker at this stage of his career and he's already a fairly savvy racer so there's not a good deal of experience to add on either. The decline of McLaren means that he's left with few options other than to beat his teammate and see what happens towards the end of the year when his contract is up. I imagine that he'd like to stay at McLaren to see in the new Honda era but Ron may have other plans.

I'm sure that other midfield teams would have him though, and the good news is that some of these teams are much more competitive this year, but still only competitive enough to scrap for the chance of 3rd place on the podium. I still recall that he's tied into longer term contracts with Tag and one of the other McLaren sponsors so perhaps he will stay where he is.

The engineering talent, or lack of it relative to Merc and RBR, still worries me about McLaren. Only a few races in and we're already talking about next year's car and getting ready for the Honda engine, yet we all know that Ron has a single-minded focus always on the next race. I don't think they've got anywhere near enough talent to keep developing this year's car whilst also working hard on getting a bumper Honda package into the 2015 chassis.

Personally I think that if he was in the Merc he would be closer to Hamilton than Rosberg is. ...

I don't simply because he can't qualify well enough. As shown at Mclaren Hamilton would be on pole and Button 5th. By then hamilton would be long gone.

I'd love for Button to do well again but his qualifying form has gone since the 2nd half of 2009.

No idea why he still is in mcclaren, he should have been given the chop last year. But if mcclaren feel empathy for him then they need to break the emotional barrier. Also i have to laugh at the statement just because he has a Jap girlfriend it would cement the relationship with Honda. Utter crap!

Also is there a new american team for next year?

Also, as long as Rosberg is in the same car as Hamilton he will never win WDC.

Whilst it is clear from these first four races that Hamilton is faster/better than Rosberg in the same machinery, i do not trust Hamilton's luck at all.

It only needs one or two more car failures, with Rosberg having no problems, and he is going to have an uphill struggle as he will need to make sure he wins every race.

I can see it now...Hamilton 49 points ahead on the last race and his car gives up on him, Rosberg wins and takes the title by virtue of double points.....imagine the ****storm!

Please let that happen. Or the other way around I'm not fussed. It's going to be the only way to get rid of the stupid idea.

What was wrong with his season at McLaren last year? He came something like 9th in the championship and the car was a massive turd that wouldn't have done any better if you'd have put Tazio Nuvolari behind the wheel.

And replaced with who? Button may not be as good as Vettel, Hamilton or Alonso but he's a good driver with plenty of experience. McLaren would have been made to stuff two rookies in the car and, in the meantime, Button is a good PR face for McLaren and a decent driver.

As I've said before, that's the whole point of the stupid idea. It's designed to make sure the title is decided at the last race. All the scenarios people are coming up with to try and show how stupid the rule is are actually just showing all the ways the rule is designed to work.

It's a catch 22. If the championship is decided at the last race then the rule worked, no matter how contrived or retarded the circumstances. For the rule to have failed we need the championships decided before the final race, which isn't what we want in 'normal' circumstances.

Woah. I hadn't realised just how experienced Button is; by the end of this season he will have the 3rd highest number of starts in F1 history (behind Rubens and Schumacher).

And he's still only 34, isn't he? He could easily race for three more seasons and crack Barrichello's record of 322/326.

I really hope Lewis brings the WDC trophy home this year, it would be great to see him win a second championship.

So what if he's a good driver? They're all good drivers or they wouldn't be in F1. I don't think he has the drive (no pun intended) anger and hunger, that edginess, to ever win another race let alone a WDC. He had his glory in 2009, it's over for him now. I really like Jenson, but the writing's on the wall imo.

(Oooh, controversial :p)
