Chromecast

That sounds very promising, I think having it virtual probably will 'sap' a % of it's capabilities.

I think I'll try it on my own Microserver this weekend. Thansk for teh pointer to the server forum.

Last question: do you know if transcoding mkv to mp4 is just repackaging the container (i.e. low intensity) or does it actually transcode video from one format to another? I'm talking a mix of AVC, VC1, and .264.

Yes theres an overhead but nothing so much it that impacts what I need from it. I'm writing this from a Windows 7 client that also is a VM on that server. I dial into it via a 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Gateway that authenticated my session on a Windows 2003 Domain Controller. These all run from the one Microserver.
I mainly do this as I like to hide from proxy logs what I am browsing when at work :)

No idea on the transcoding sorry. I normally acquire stuff in MP4, I just know for each MKV I tried it had to be transcoded as the CPU usage goes up to 100% on both cores.

Hi fellas,
Was trying to play a .mp4 file last night by just opening it in Chrome and casting the tab. It resulted in some choppy playback on the TV.

Is this my network? or just the fact that loading the video in chrome and then casting it wasn't "rendering" it properly?

Thanks

I've just got one, it works brilliantly casting from my Plex server - means I can watch my movies in another room without needing to do any cabling work. Great little kit for under £20.

NOW TV support as of today for the Chromecast!

Sweeeet. Now I definitely don't need to buy Sky. Shame I can't use an existing Sky Go account on it though. The price they charge for a day of Sky Sports instead of a simple monthly fee is ridiculous. I only want it to watch the odd Rugby game!

anyone know a workaround for no audio when streaming mkv x264 via plex + bubbleupnp to chromecast? on the app it says ffmpeg not found....

would k-lite codecs help at all?

because that either requires buying another app (when i've alread bought bubble) or getting up every time i want to pause/change what i'm watching (pc upstairs, chromecast downstairs).

the point being at some point it will probably be sorted in bubble, but was looking for a temporary fix until then. i'm not wasting more money on apps i'll use for a bit then ditch, i've done that far too much in the past and really want to control my app splurging :p

anyway, i can live with it as is for now, just a minor inconvenience.

e: worst case i could convert them to mp4 with handbrake.

Ok, but I am sure I am not alone in saying that Plex is one hell of an amazing experience. It's basically Netflix but with your own media. Worth installing the Media Server just to test with. It's free and you can cast from the browser on your PC. You could also use RDP if you couldn't be bothered to get out your chair :)

i've got the media server installed. bubble pulls file info from that and streams it to my phone which i use as a remote for chromecast.

i can also use bubble when i'm round a friends house to stream music from my phone or dropbox/drive.

been a while since i bought it, but i vaguely remember i got it purely for its flexibility.

e: solution found!

i just downloaded a more recent ffmpeg preset file and stuck it in the bubble server directory on my pc. works like a charm now ;)

Netflix has worked with the Chromecast for as long as the Chromecast has been around. the auto-play is a few feature though.
