Chromecast

Quick question, I'm struggling to get my head around this fair simple aspect as I've heard different things:

Does this device simply mirror what is on your laptop/phone/tablet onto the TV with a nice interface? I.e. If I wanted to play something on one of the Chromecast supported apps, do I just load it on my phone, hit play, it will then play on Chromecast, and I can then close the app on my phone?

I wouldn't really want to have an app drawing power from my phone throughout the entire movie, but at the moment that is what I understand it does. Someone else described it more as a remote control though, meaning it is much more like an Apple TV and you use your phone/tablet as a remote, then there is also mirroring capability from computer browsers.

Your phone is the remote control and tells the chromecast to pull down the stream from the Internet. Like any remote you can then pull the batteries out and the programme will still play on the TV.

I purchased a chromecast when they were first released a while back.

Unfortunately for me, I ended up selling it. Anyway, I've bought another one (UK Model this time) which turns out to to firmware locked

anyone know any clever devs working on it?

The hole used to root these devices were closed a long time ago. I've not heard of any work arounds although I don't really activly look at XDA site any more.

That's great, thanks.

Undecided between this and Roku Stream Stick at the min.

Chromecast is better for if I have friends round and they want to stream straight from their phones but Roku has more support of apps I use (Sky Sports and Spotify). Typing letters into apps using the D pad on Rok would be a pain in the bum!

There are apps to stream from the phone but they are pretty crap imo. Like I said treat the chromecast as a TV and your phone as a remote control. You don't stream media from your remote to your TV. You use it to only manage what your TV plays.

Hopefully Eurosport Player won't be long.

BTSport looks great but my 2mb connection struggles at times, fingers crossed for the Rural Broadband roll out this Summer for me.

Can these things be connected to a receivers hdmi in or must it be on the tv?

I have a avrx2000

Also can you change DNS settings on it to use unblock US for netflix?

Cheers

Connect to avr, set the connection to pass through so you don't always have to have the avr on.

BT sports updated for chromecast today. Picking one up at lunch time

Got mine yesterday. Really easy to setup. BT sports worked great and was much quicker/simpler than switching the pc on and navigating through the website etc.

Also tried iplayer, netflix, youtube, plex, allcast and chrome. All worked really well. Considering picking up another for the kitchen now.

I used the usb on the back of the sky HD box as a power supply. (No usb on my 4/5 year old plasma)

Does the Sky box drop power on the USB port when it's in standby? I do the same with a PVR but it looses power when in standby.
