Chromecast

Mine arrived today and it works brilliantly.

However... I'm getting an underscan problem, and my TV doesn't have any options to fix this... So some bits gets chopped off... Maybe I need a new TV...

bought one the other day - to watch Netflix, Iplayer, Youtube and Video Podcasts in the bedroom - and works perfectly - great device

at price couldn't criticise anything about it - bargain really - and very neat as tucked away at rear of TV

Is this a better alternate to a Roku box do you think? Just bought myself a synology nas so im intrigued to know if this can stream music to the chromecast

The Synology music app on Android works faultlessly for casting music to the Chromecast, if you use google music and have you music in the cloud you can also use that to cast your music.

Many thanks for that mate, just ordered myself one now. Hopefully it will stream mkv's etc ok and i may be able to get rid of my htpc box

As most will say, Plex is a great solution in regards to pushing local media to the device. As Plex does it's transcoding on the fly, regardless of the file type, it will stream anything to the Chromecast. The Plex app is a paid app but well worth every single penny IMO.
You'll still need a computer to be streaming from (Plex Media Server), I'm not sure how Plex works with your NAS.

Quick question, for those with a Chromecast.

Can you cast a tab on your ipad Google Chrome, onto your TV; and the webpage has a video, would that play ?

Few questions I'm a bit confused about

How does one control the chromecast?
How does it work with netflix, do i need a laptop for it to work?

If i set up a plex media server on a microserver/mini, do i still need a laptop to 'forward' films to it?

How does it work with netflix, do i need a laptop for it to work? in the Netflix app there is the option to cast to your Chromecast. Not sure about laptop.

If i set up a plex media server on a microserver/mini, do i still need a laptop to 'forward' films to it? nope install the plex app on your phone/tablet and again press the cast button on the media you choose. Not checked but I don't think there is an option to cast from your laptop via plex although it is possible to play local media via Google Chrome . Check YouTube there are plenty of reviews on the Chromecast in action.

I have the same plex setup although my plex is running in an Arch Linux VM. Seems to be working fine. As said you just need to buy the android app.
You can cast from YouTube and Netflix websites on any PC. IPlayer will be able to do this in their new version soon.
If you have a ps3 and Netflix you can see what casting is like. Just open Netflix on the ps3 then open it on your phone and tap the cast icon. I guess this should work from the Netflix website too on a PC.

If you buy the Android plex app do you still need a plex pass for Chromecast ? I have a plex pass plus use the free app with no problems.

btw iPlayer already support Chromecast in the latest version.

You don't need the plex pass, no.

You will probably have to delete your current (unpaid) plex, and pay for and install the new version.

There are two apps for Plex. One is free but needs Plex pass which you have. The other is a paid app that doesnt need Plex pass. It's a one off purchase so if you ditch your pass then you need to pay for the other app. After then it's free to use.

In regards to iPlayer I was talking about pushing programmes from your PC's web browser iPlayer rather than the iPlayer app found in iOS and Android.

Plex just updated the Android app.
