Cigarette Prices

Just caught this thread. It was depressing coming though Egypt.

500g of Golden Virginia was £23.

£23!!

To buy that much in England?

£160!!

PS - I don't smoke, I was purchasing for my mate :)

The cost of smoking is ridiculous. I can't believe my friends who smoke have any money left to spend on anything else.

I've personally never smoked and never will. I find the whole process disgusting. My Grandad has smoked all his life and thanks to that now has a number of related medical issues, which will more than likely kill him in the near future. I always ask him why he doesn't quit, to which he responds that he's come too far now and wants to spend his last years enjoying life. He does however, say that if he could have seen in to the future as a young man, he would have never even started.

Price of cigs to me pointless!!!

Enjoyment priceless!!!! :p

Just a small point!!!

IF IT CONTAINS BAD LANGUAGE THEN WHY POST IT?

WARNING BAD LANGUAGE!!!

We had a cleaner at our hospital who, every 3 months, says she would get a cheap sleazyjet flight or similar to Gibraltar, load up on fags and bring them back. She must have smoked hundreds a day. She says she had one on the go all day every day apart from when she was cleaning obviously but even tgen she had regular fag breaks outside.

Shes dead now. Shame as she was a nice lady, but she smoked so much, it literally killed her off :(

Hundreds a day? I don't see how that's possible.

I've never smoked once in my life so while I may not understand the enjoyment of having all those chemicals and smoke in your lungs, it can't be worth the price tag.

If you've never smoked then it is difficult to judge - plenty of people do dangerous/unhealthy things for the enjoyment.

I'd never smoked cigarettes either until my stag do and that was only because I was so wasted I thought I was being given something a bit different to smoke :)

Anyway as for the OP what surprised me was that the price of fags was little more than double what you pay back home, I thought it was going to be 5x or more.

Lol, like marijuana?

After 9 months in the UK spending around £4.25 on 12.5g of tobacco I'm so happy I've moved again and only pay around £6.50 (8.40 euro ish) for 50g of Cutters Choice. Could go a lot cheaper if I got more local brands but I'm still saving a fortune.

Does that work? Does flying direct to Gibraltar circumvent all that duty free allowance stuff?

No EvilDreams, you can only get duty free on 1 carton of 200 cigarettes in Gibraltar so its not a viable way of saving money, unless you happen to be there on holiday anyway. The police at the boarder are shiz hot too so dont risk it, they have tightened you loads with all the blockades as well over the last couple of years.

Since i quit 7 years ago i've saved more than ever. I'm paying about 0 now and thats including the tax!

thread revival

I vape now and the savings are great, I didn't enjoy roll-ups so smoked straights and at 8 pound for 20 it really is an obscene amount of money when you start adding it all up

if they really wanted to stop smokers, they would raise the buying age by one year every year.

the reason they dont do this is because of all the dollar signs that roll round their eyes when they see the revenue from smokers [no evidence for this but i did hear its more than enough to cover the whole nhs budget and then some, lousy non-smoking nhs scroungers :P ]

as for prices, i'm on rollies myself so its not that much. trying to cut down by vaping [at least in the evening times]. only thing stops me quitting entirely is the fact any attempt to quit during uni is asking for failure.

also, for those saying all the shineys you could buy with the money, i spent more in a month drinking than smoking, quit drinking and the money evaporated to the point i still dont understand how i sustained it.

99% of the Cig's i smoked were imported due to the price.

I'm vaping now, cheaper, better etc...

Also more technical, i like that, i'll be asking what you smoking, what watts, volts, amps, ohms, mah etc...

Other way around here, I smoke roll ups but I still feel ripped off when I can't get any cheap tobacco (bloke down the pub doesn't always have any).

Roll ups are cheap anyway. A heavy smoker isn't going to use all that much more than 25g ish a week (unless rolling them ridiculously fat) which is the price of a single pack of cigarettes.

I gave up smoking not for health reasons, I had throat cancer, but because of the price. I was stunned to notice recently that fags were over a tenner a packet these days. Unaffordable when on benefits even though some would have you believe differently.

I was on forty a day, not sure how I afforded it when I was working as even at the prices 5-6 years ago it was still a healthy sum to spend each week. Scary.

Quit smoking over 14 months ago now. Was smoking about 5-7 a day.

I didn't quit because of the price but for my health. I've moved onto vaping and absolutely love it, down to 3mg nicotine in my DIY eliquid mixes (which I believe equates to 1-2 cigs a day) and will ween myself off of the entire thing eventually.

But for now, I'm happy vaping my custards, berries and menthol, strawberry milkshakes and cookies and cream :D

I quit when I returned to the UK from living in the States, the difference in prices was insane. I smoked the ones I bought on the plane and that was that.
That was over six years ago.

I smoke 50g a week.

I remember when 50g was about £12, it's nearly 20 now. And it wasn't that long ago!

Hell I remember when you could buy 20 decent fags for £4 odd, it's ridiculous how quickly it's all gone up in price.

It's like petrol - years ago a penny rise would command outrage but nowadays people just let them do it.
