Cigarette Prices

I wonder how many people will still think like this if they find themselves close to death in their 60s due to lung cancer.. never going to see their grand kids grow up or miss their daughters wedding day all because they think that inhaling some smoke while having a pint is a good idea.

if I lived to 60 then I'd be fine with that. Anyway this isn't about people who like the fact smoking is banned or about people smelling. As a smoker I couldnt care less about someone that isnt influenced by my smoke being judgmental. People that write stuff like this are up there with street preachers lol... Remember kids... Say your prayers and dont smoke!!

All I asked was whether the price increases over the past 10 years had lead to many of the people on this forum quitting :p

Yea... I was an 80 a day smoker, glad I'm a non smoker now, that would be like £1,100+ to smoke per month.

I refuse to believe that is possible. There is only 8 working hours in a day and only 12 - 14 waking hours.

How did you get any work done ? were you permanently connected to the end of a fag

A regular at the local CIU club died suddenly recently aged 49. Every night he was in the club drinking and smoking at least 20 a night. So prob smoked about 40 day in total.

Drinking and smoking = premature death.

Not fussed about living til I'm 90 crapping my pants in some nursing home, if I hit 60 and get lung cancer I'll just top myself - problem solved.

I imagine most of the people who I care about will be dead by then anyway, fly off to hong kong, kill self, people assume I disappeared. No worries.

As far as second hand smoke goes? I was fine with a separate room and my local did have one for a long time.

But realistically if you're going into the pub to drink you can't be moaning about second hand smoke as being some devilish thing. Pubs aren't salad bars, we go there to do unhealthy things. I'm just glad you can still smoke at a lock in.

I wonder if all the people having a pop at smokers for killing themselves in such a selfish manner go around saying the same things to people who drive cars for pleasure? or ride motorbikes, go scuba diving, hill walking, hang gliding anyone?

1.4 cigarettes = 1 micromort. Same as riding a motorbike for 6 miles.

That's a daft mindset. I don't want lung cancer so I shouldn't be able to enjoy a decent pint in a social setting down my local? Enjoying a few beers is not comparable to inhaling your 2nd hand smoke.

Are you one of those types that just go out to "get rekt on Carling wiv da ladz"?

I think you're being intentionally immature with these comments just to try and get a rise. Maybe you just feel silly that you have this addiction to something quite daft? Take up vaping? I don't even know why I'm replying to you anyway :D the government saw common sense years ago by giving people the right not to have to endure 2nd hand tobbacco smoke.

PS, my great grandfather lived well into his 90's, living at home and not a nursing home, enjoying long walks in the countryside, enjoying life fit and able. You shouldn't be so pessimistic banking on 60yrs old. You'll get to that age and wish to the world you had longer.

Indeed. I'm all for non-smoking pubs. As a casual, social smoker I used to go to them before the ban. Especially on nights where I wore clothes I didn't want to smell like an alehouse. But there should be a place for smoking bars / pubs too.

Ironically, the smoking ban increased my smoking, especially with alcohol. I used to go out some nights and not smoke at all. Now I spend most of the time at the pub in heated beer gardens along with everyone else.

Smoke yourself to death chap. Just don't make me share your smoke :p

What I do love is those smokers who are all smug about smoking and also make comments about how much they contribute to the NHS through doing so. I just smile and think "CHUMP". Yep, keep on paying for my free healthcare.

Dont like the price? Oh noooos.

How about stop smoking? stop blowing puffs of smoke in the face of people when they walk into buildings. Eh how about that?

It is extortion realy. With 70% of it being tax. You know that the tobacco could be sold for as little as £2 a box if it was not for the tax and the tobacco companies would still make 100% profit per box. Boxes only cost £1 to make. If that. Probably much less.

The government has doubled tax revenue in 20 years from cigs in spite of usage dropping 50%.

I dont think any of the smokers on this thread have said about how much we contribute to the NHS... your the one that came onto a thread about smoking... but your a non smoker so why cause a fuss about nothing, unless your just bored and want people to hear what you think are your valid arguments. I'd rather take in a little smoke at a pub than take in some little pretty boys rancid aftershave that hes so liberally washed his whole body in... but im not gona start a no aftershave in pubs stance. We all do things that someones not gona like, get over yourself Captain Planet lol

Well yeah. I don't expect people to share my smoke. I don't go round knocking on people's doors and blowing smoke in their faces.

I just don't understand why non-smokers think it's okay to ban it from anywhere and everywhere because they don't like it. There was talk of banning it in public parks. Why? I just find it very myopic.

There are loads of things I don't like, but I understand other people enjoy them. I don't go around advocating that they're banned.

My work includes Vaping as smoking and has banned it inside. If you want to do it join the real smokers at the smoke shelter. Pubs and clubs should do the same.

There is a difference between your work or any pub deciding what is allowed or not, and the government forcing it regardless.

If i owned a pub, i would prefer to decide my own rules on the topic of smoking or vaping... If someone does not like it, they can simply GTFO.

Can't see a steep price stopping the addicts.

it stopped me!

my partner and i were spending £350 a month on cigs it's been 5 months since we gave up now and CHA CHING :D

if they were cheap i'd still be smoking as we do miss it, we just hated spending all the cash

health benefits are nil i actually still feel terrible for giving up

I disliked the amount that i used to smoke, 20+ a day. especially at the price, but i do enjoy smoking. It is very good to have a smoke break at work and also after meals cig is very enjoyable. But i smoked so much it was ridiculous, would wake up and smoke a cig right away and probably have 2-3 before i even reached worked.

The difference is if I go to the pub and have a soft drink while a mate is drinking a pint I don't get liver problems from him doing that. Stand next to a smoker and I'm more likely to get lung cancer...

One simple solution for allowing smoking back in pubs - stick a bag over your head and seal it, then you can smoke as much as you like... That way I dont have to inhale your smoke, just like I don't have to drink the alcohol the person next to me is drinking...

Last time I checked scuba diving didn't cause the person next to you medical problems... Few people have a problem with people killing themselves. it's having to put up with them slowly killing you as well, along with the stench.

Or how about something as simple as, do not go into the pub?

That way you do not have to breathe anyone's smoke.
