Cities Skylines 2 is Official!

You played the game on game pass. If they stuck with say, steam workshop, do you think you’d be able to access mods on game pass?
The steam workshop mods are easily downloadable online for the first game if you don't have it on steam, so I doubt this would be an issue.

I expect the total number of non-steam users that used mods was near zero because the user experience is terrible compared to clicking a button in the steam UI or now in the game UI.

Likewise, consoles are locked out entirely. While consoles don’t get code mods under the new system, they can at least get assets.

I agree, but if you want the mods and have picked up the version on Epic when they gave them away, it is entirely doable to get Steam Workshop mods.

I was unaware about the console mods - though I do wonder if they could have used one of the other mod repositories rather than create their own. (Nexus, Thunderstore, Mod.io)

I’m still not seeing why you think it’s advantageous to use a 3rd party host for mod support over baking it directly into the game. It’s not a better user experience and it’s not better for the developer.

These websites mainly exist because of the vacuum of first party support which historically has never been valued.

Sure you could argue that the mod support was half baked to begin with (as was the game), but 3rd party hosting wouldn’t have changed that. The issue was the lack of modding tools not that the mods were self hosted.

All of these websites can be breached in the exact same way that PDX mods was breached. As I mentioned, steam workshop has been breached in the exact same way before.

I’m sure they’ll learn lessons from it and I’m no apologist but ultimately I’m not seeing a convincing argument that the alternative is better in the round.

They can all be breached. I'm fairly sure Nexus already has been tbh. I'm just not sure why they couldn't use the the existing services - I'm fairly sure I've played games that do this and have it integrated into the game (Factorio maybe).

Better user experience depends on what it offers. I've not tried CS2 so can't comment, can it offer different profiles? The ability to not update a mod? Can it be used if you don't keep the game updated? These are, off the top of my head, things I've had to do when I've modded stuff.

Profiles yes, per save. No idea on the other two, I expect not but there is nothing stopping you sideloading mods into the game if that is what you want to do, that is how people were doing it before they launched the in game support.

But given how a game line Cities Skylines is constantly getting new content being added (some for free), I expect you'll want to make sure make sure you are on the latest version for the considerable future. I mean they just dropped another big update for original Cities Skylines a couple of weeks ago.

Ah that's ok. That means all third party mod websites are fine then. I assumed it was their store and nothing else - my mistake!

Yea that's fair, paradox are good with their updates TBH. Depends how much you rely on specific mods and if they break/updated to keep up with releases. I can think of a Skyrim type situation otherwise and that's no fun.
If sideloading is fine then that's what I'd do - I hate it when certain mods in games update and then break compatibility with something else. I'd rather be made aware of an update but I choose to update when I want.

They've got it all wrong.

Where are the bins on the street in the terrace housing areas? The cars parked on the road should make it so only 1 car can fit down at a time.
There should be rubbish everywhere and dog poo on the pavements along with cigarette butts and chewing gum
I want to be able to place blue/brown and green bins outside of houses and on streets. During Cities 1, I built a detailed UK town based on Macwelshman's UK collections. It will take a while to see that kind of content back in CS II, especially UK-style roads! I know we can place some items, but getting Cims to interact with the benches, for example, would be nice.

Did they fix the game yet? Until it's the same or better than CS1, I don't understand how they can charge for more content.
Asked and answered on the last page.

Is the game worth jumping back into now? I had about 10 hours on release but with the performance and other early issues abandoned it. Have been missing CS and not sure if it is worth to play the original or give 2 some time now.

Yes. Has been for a long time now.

As for charging for more content, there is WAY more content in the game compared to vanilla CS1, particularly with all of the free region packs they have just released.

These are the first two paid packs, of many I'd expect as was the case with CS1.

Well, that's a surprise: a new patch is being released today:

The new car parking and car parks look great.
Japan region pack was released 2 days ago also. It’s pretty big at 4gb.

The amount of assets in the base game now if you include those official mod packs are huge.
