Cities: Skylines

I'm at a city of around 80/90k right now, the one i've been recording and posting to youtube with lots and lots of lag :( Downloaded quite a lot of assets and stuff and can I just say, I am so, so excited to start a new city get into a new city with more awareness and more practice. Furthermore, I've got some of those huge roads, Ie, 12 lanes, with separate bus lanes, and separate tram lines, and bike lanes :p I feel like my traffic management can be so much better, but I just feel I've gotta finish this series on youtube anyway first.

Currently the closest thing I have to a hub is an airport, train station, 4 separate metro stations each with a different loop and a blimp stop all in a small area and it's so cool to see all these people spill out of a metro station from another island, to spill into various different metro stations for their onwards journey :)

God damn this game, god damn it i'm at work and can't play here :p

PC is broke at the moment so been watching some strictoaster videos.

Holy ****. How the hell do people come up with this stuff. It's incredible.

Infrastructurist is another one similar in style. And another, forgot who at the moment, uses a drone to take photos where he lives in Australia and the recreates with a great degree of realism the exact same appearance in Skylines.

not only do these people have amazing skills and patience many of them use mods to "turn off" or disable much of the games functionality just to create their maps without the need to bother with any of the required infrastructure.

amazing to watch tho.

Colonel Failure is kinda the opposite.

Our own NooBish just needs to sort out his lag issues :)

NooBish AbbZ would need to upgrade the PC he uses to play/record. To which he has no plans for :(

Really struggling at the moment, my commercial zones are struggling from lack of goods at the moment. Thinking it's because of connection issues to industrial zone? Also maybe I need a freight terminal? Do freight terminals just connect to a normal train line going out of the area? I'm also trying to make junctions without traffic lights, lots of slip roads etc, not sure if roundabouts are the best idea.

Yeah it took me a while to notice this.

Lack of goods means what it states. Everything in this game to do with goods has to be done in a timely manner or it fails. So either imports can't keep up due to the volume and access issues or your manufacturing can't supply and or deliver in time.

Try and keep your Commercial zones to small areas and close to fast accessible connection points.
Remember commercial make noise so not adjacent to residential if possible, especially in numbers. If they are then they will have to be supplied by heavy trucks going through residential.

My city at the moment is around 220k and I have several commercial zones. My imports are around 80 or so and my specialised and generic industry supplies all my commercial with finished goods mainly by rail. A buffer using a one way rail track exports the overflow from my industry.
Remember to separate your goods rail from passenger rail. Also separate external goods rail from internal

Is it worth getting the Snowfall and Green City expansion packs?

I have bought all the DLC, the only one I sort of regretted was Snowfall as I thought that it would have Seasons. I do like the others and even Snowfall adds content.

Nah not Edinburgh, lol.

For inspiration I look towards Sam Bur and Biffa plays Indie games. Those two have a great presentation style and plays the game with the default rule set and not as OTT as others can be.

Funny you say this, just started watching Biffa. Want to get the disaster expansion now, the scenarios look like great fun and quite challenging.

Yeah I can understand that, overall I find that all the extras, apart from the music ones adds value to my game. I tend to grab them when on sale I may got a good price for the Green Cities one.

Biffa is good, search out Sam Bur tho. He too is worth watching
Conflictnerd, or someone like that, is ok but I find him irritating after a while His cities can also be heavily modded and would implode workout some of those mods. Still he has some good ideas.

Think I need to rip out one of those middle roads and slap in a fast motorway , I've destroyed all my industrial zones would goods come from there ? I've revamped the ibdustriai zone so it comes straight off anmotorway with 3 one way 4 lanes and straight back on, as well as 2 freight terminals connected by rail and going to out a monorail in. I assume industrial will be related to goods?

So generic industry from that map MUST have efficient quick links to commercial, and as long as good links to industry zone, as in foreigt Terminal and efficient exit entry then that should be good to go. However what is the specialized districts? Is that new as well I only notice things like tech sector after adding some of the DLC.

Specialised are....

Ore
Farm
Forest
Oil

They have raw producers and then processors and then......... refer to above :)

The raw producers have to be built on land with that resource, expect for forestry as you can plant that. Mods take it to another level.

Managing that and balancing it can be kinda intensive.

Generic industry only at the early stages of experience can be easier, to manage but you need to have enough access for importing what both they and commercial needs.

Industry and Commercial have to be able to deliver in a timely way or you get from industry that there are no buyers or raw products and from commercial that there are no goods to sell, or people to buy them.
Its about proximity, good connections and transport.
Industrial Spacing policy can also be useful but that also have consequences and so.......

you might be better watching some let's play vids to give you a visual understanding.

Riight!, so I need a chunk of general industry then based on whatever resources are around I need the specialised industry connecting to it. I was also readying about getting freight to the commercial zones, so maybe have a freight terminal on the side of a commercial zone and possibly a port too? However seems like a port can cause huge traffic at the same time. I'm slowly rebuilding the city it's a real learning curve at first but I understand why the large grid systems and limiting of junctions is important.

ps do you ever modify roads and paint new road lines? I've got assets and all that and can search them but I can find just a normal way to draw the straight road lines and also how to pain the roads to get rid of the zebra crossings where not needed.

I really love this game thought, worth the money, a good city can take months to build it's got great longevity
