What kinda city/theme you doing?
If the Parklife DLC and patch had not been coming so soon I had intended to look at either a desert theme, not tried before, or a detailed map with enough terrain differences to make the building of a humongous type city completely inappropriate. Something perhaps like this....

.... either of those, detailed or desert, would have been different enough from my usual builds.
I had even started collating a number of RICO buildings and tested out the "fixed" RICO mod as my collection of residential RICO properties expanded. Either of the two ideas would have encouraged a more small interconnected towns approach, as mentioned before the vanilla buildings are a little bland or lacking when you wish to think outside of the conventional style of city building. The next version of the MOM mod is supposed to be due shortly, not too sure if that would have figured in either of the two possibilities tho.
But Parklife seems to offer a lot which would influence how my next build could develop.
With that in mind I'm just playing around with a more conventional build but I'm trying not to use any Metro and not have a huge city but one of smaller towns interconnected by rail, hopefully.
BTW I found this mod which is proving to be most invaluable....

adjusting costs etc is working well. Also I can increase, for example, school capacity and its radius of influence etc. This means that if you are not building grids, most efficient, you no longer get dead spots of lack of services just by increasing their radius of influence.
These overpasses are also working well....
