City Fibre

Due to have Giganet installed tomorrow, based on the thread I'm starting to think I should've gone with no-one!

Is it unusual that I haven't heard from the engineers yet? I was half expecting a call/ survey as the fibre is UG, so assume they'll need to dig from the junction box on the pavement up to the front of my house...
For me Cityfibre randomly turned up and asked if it was OK to check the duct, etc to make sure everything would be OK for my No One install.

It was very reassuring given I was moving from virgin so needed new cabling.

On the install day, Cityfibre did everything and it went well. They wouldn't leave until they were satisfied the levels were within the threshold. First run to green box on street was not to their satisfaction so they re-did it.

Had Giganet installed yesterday - can't fault the City Fibre guys, all done within an hour and a tidy install.

BQM Doesn't seem to work but guessing this is a CGNAT or Eero issue - going to enquire about a static IP and consider a third party router... probably should've just gone with no-one

Bit of confusion around No one and my current router. During ordering there's a checkbox that says "I'd like to use my own router", and if you click it it says:

"If you are using your own router on our CityFibre service it must be capable of having VLAN tag/id 911 applied to the WAN port. The connection type is PPPoE and we will provide you with your login credentials. You don't need to specify DNS as that is provided automatically. You can use alternative DNS servers if you choose."

I have this router: ASUS RT-AX82U

But struggling to double check if it will be OK, as there is conflicting info online.

Will be a great combo and work with no trouble.

This is from a DSL-AX82U but same thing. Set the WAN type to Ethernet, where it says 101 you put 911 and then the username/password you get from city fibre.

Awesome cheers.

@zpos absolutely, if you tick "I want to use my own router" they actually remove the free router from the order. So obviously just going to leave it unticked and get the router regardless.

Surprised these altnets don't have some sort of "already have your own router? Tick this box and we will take £2 per month off your monthly bill". Would save so much waste and unnecessary postage costs.

I would guess they don't want to encourage it, from a CS perspective its easier to train CS staff if the routers are all the same.

To be fair, the mercku 6a No One provide is much better than I expected. I've not had to reboot it since I got it. My old asus ac3200 hooked up to my virgin cable modem needed a reboot fairly regularly.

Also, the mercku meshes up really nicely with another 6a I got from them.

I had 900/900 CityFibre installed with Vodafone about 3 weeks ago (annoyingly out of cooling off period). I’ve just gone back to work and noticed that zoom calls are intermittent so I set up a BQM. Looks like I have regular packet loss of up to 10%. I spoke to Vodafone support today. Went through the rigmarole of first line support telling me to reboot router etc. Eventually he said he’d raise a ticket for the second line team so they are due to call me in the next 2-3 days. Anyone experienced something similar and is there a solution other than convince them to waive the early termination fee and move ISP? The speeds I get are perfectly fine but it’s the intermittency that’s the problem. My old 40mb copper connection was more reliable than this.

Yeah that's pretty consistently bad. Surely if they can't fix you can leave right?

For comparison this is mine

Thanks. Your graph is a useful point of comparison.

Yes, in theory I can leave if the service isn’t good enough. But getting to the stage where they admit that, giving them the chance to fix it and if it doesn’t work convincing them to waive the termination fee is going to take quite a lot of effort on my part. Wish I had figured this out in the cooling off period…

Thats not good then. Come november time i need to be shopping around since my vodafone contract is up and the 900 meg gonna gonto 75 quid a month which is rip.
Same here, on the same deal ends around 10th Nov for me, thinking of giving Yayzi a try, as I always have the 14 day cooling period if it's no good.
I just wish there was more results on the internet about what sort of latency I could expect and traceroutes etc, since they're still a pretty small ISP haven't come across anything like that yet.

do you have to give vodafone a heads up for cancelation like with virgin had to give them 30 days notice? if so will plan this out beforehand, unless vodafone has another offer on come the time

Last time I left them, I just signed up for a new contract elsewhere and the one with VF got auto cancelled when the new order went in.

Also, if you've got a few months left with Vodafone, you might be surprised how cheap it is to leave early. I've got 7 months left and got onto live chat last weekend, it would cost me £68 to break my contract early - I pay £36/month.
