City Fibre

Thank you. Yes that's also the kind of thing I wanted to know. How considerate they are with property when making the channels for the cables. Are they gonig to do a sensible and tidy job or just the quickest easiest method.

Could they make a channel along the pavement or would it always come straight onto property (digging along a whole driveway). I should probably get a photo to give proper context. :D

I don't mind leaving the Openreach box, it'll sit behind a cabinet/shelves anyway. Just thinking of the City Fibre installer would ask to remove it.
That I have no idea sorry, my install was from a pole, so the cable met the building high up, and its pinned going down the external wall and sideways a bit to the entry point. Other side of entry point is the ONT.

Wanted to ask this question several weeks ago but only just got the time to do so.

Question is... anyone on no one noticed when signing into WiFi on your mobile that it says connecting to EE WiFi!! Once connected and you do a speed test its fine.

Short version is the Airband rep was out of date with his info. When I asked at point of order, I was told Velop, which is apparently what they used to hand out, after 6+ hours in a car, I turned up to find a bloke with a Nokia Wifi Beacon 2 complaining about the foot thick walls - the same walls we had during the half arsed survey he did that basically consisted of him taking a photo of one end of the house. The Nokia is basic and annoying, I have significantly better kit in the 'spare' router pile, so it's days are numbered, but in fairness other than the crappy UI, it's actually not put a foot wrong yet.
BTW Airband offer symmetrical connections now, and will re-provision for free without it effecting your contract. Just asked mine to re-provisioned to 900/900.

Thanks for the heads up, the uplink at this property doesn't really get used other than remote CCTV viewing, but i’ll be putting some off-site backup/automation kit in over Christmas.

Had no issues for a long time. Funny enough Wednesday I spot a openreach contractor van outside the house parked across two spaces including the mrs disabled bay. Round the back of houses with ladders and then mucking about in the fibre access pit out the front that is only for our city fibre and low and behold since then speeds down of 30 to 60mb, Uploads fine at 800ish but still far to coincidental. Speeds direct to ont to rule out equipment. Wondering what the openreach contractor numpties been doing.

As a previous ambassador of No One Internet, I can’t recommend them anymore.

When I signed up to them in 2023, they were excellent at helping me resolve a long term issue I’d had trying to get broadband through Cityfibre.

Unfortunately, they were bought out by Home Telecom who are abysmal - think Virgin Media level incompetence.

I’m in the process of trying to leave due to a change of property, and can’t get them to acknowledge my notice of intent at all.

Would absolutely avoid for anyone thinking of going with them, as I know a few did on here after the great experience I’d had prior.

Yayzi have just implemented traffic shaping short term between 5pm and 10pm. Knowing something of the lead times for port capacity upgrades with CF and the paperwork required, I guess it was inevitable as they were adding hundreds per day last I knew.

We’re excited to share that we’re in the final stages of an incredible network upgrade that will bring huge benefits for you! As we work closely with CityFibre to transition our connections to the new network, we’re making sure everything is perfectly set up for an even better experience.

To ensure a smooth transition, we’ll be applying some temporary traffic shaping during peak hours (between 5pm and 10pm). This will help maintain strong connections and keep latency low as we complete the upgrade. Rest assured, this is a short-term measure, and we’ll keep you updated with our progress every step of the way.

Once finished, this upgrade will deliver lower latency, improved peering, and a smoother overall experience. It’s a big step forward for Yayzi, and it will futureproof our network to support the rapid growth we’re experiencing—so you can expect even better service going forward!

We truly appreciate your continued patience and support as we work to bring you the best network experience possible.

You can keep up to date by visting our status page: https://status.yayzi.co.uk/

Thank you for being part of this exciting journey!

Kind regards,

Yayzi Network Operations Team

Only been with no one for a few months. Only 2 issues with them so far 1st was not receiving my 1st bill I had to phone them to tell them about it. 2nd issue wasn't really a problem sorted in 5 minutes, the router wouldn't let me set 2.4 and 5Ghz channels separately I couldn't work it out and all I had to do was turn WiFi mesh off inside the router the service has worked perfectly fine.

Still thinking of getting my own router just can't make my mind up on which one to get. The flint 2 is the front runner for now but by the time I make my mind up the flint 3 will be out.

That is....a joke. Do CityFibre plan on destroying their business by ensuring their ISP partners all have terrible reputations?

I'll be honest, i'm out of the loop at this stage due to something else happening, so take everything I am about to say with a large pinch of salt. From what Liam has said when asked previously, CF port capacity upgrades take a while to go through, paperwork takes time and the process is somewhat long-winded. I remember him saying the last time they upgraded port capacity that the next upgrade had already been submitted as the lead time was longer than was ideal. At that point Yayzi were doing about 300 installs a day, obviously usage varies, but we all know how demand scales and peaks. Last time round, it was a rough few weeks waiting for the capacity upgrade, this time i'd imagine they are trying to manage it, so everyone gets a reasonable service rather than the horror of a free for all. I also know they have deployed a lot more new kit in recent months and brought some external consultancy on the network side 'in house' and rolled IPV6 out finally.

When it comes to CF, I used to wonder who on earth was behind the process development and where the heck they came from, because it's clearly not being overseen by anyone who understands industry processes and what it takes to get an efficient outcome. Recently, I have accepted that they probably haven't got anyone co-ordinating process development and actively reviewing it, and that's why it's the absolute .... show that it is. The failed install process (something I spent a lot of time on at a former employer) is an absolute cluster duck of stupidity. It's built from the ground up to lose customers, delay construction and annoy both CF's ISP customers and end users. It's screaming for CF to own the installation until activation, instead they are clinging to a process that requires tech notes before they will act over 24hrs later if asked, rather than deal with a fail on the day with the tech and book appropriate resources with the customer at that point. Instead, they leave it to the customer to chase the ISP, who chases CF, who refuse to chase the tech till the SLA on the notes is up, who then feed back to the ISP (who seemingly isn't notified of the update - may have changed now) and only then can a further tech/cons appointment be booked with the customer after the ISP goes back to them potentially 1-2 days later. It's not rocket science to run a small customer facing failed installations team, have the tech liaise with them, provide accurate info on the correct resolution, book further resources with the knowledge/agreement of the customer at that point for a future date, and only when the CPE is on network, hand it over to the ISP for activation.

Anything billing is handled by Home Telecom, with tech still No One.

So expect technical support to still be great but anything related to your bill to be… average.

Hopefully you have no issues

Deffo recommend your own router though for better performance and control :)

When I 1st noticed I didn't get a bill I tried to phone Home Telecom several times but no one answered so I got in touch with no one. They got in touch with Home Telecom, Home Telecom phoned me the next day to apologise.

I will look at getting a different router in the new year at the moment the Zyxel DX3301-T0 is doing a pretty good job.

City Fibre is being installed in quite a lot of the smaller villages near to me and there's rumours that they'll be coming here (town of about 6.5k people) in the next year or two. Bring it on. I'm lucky enough to have BT FTTP already, but I would really like more upstream.

OR have already announced symmetrical packages in April iirc.

City Fibre installed in our area during Covid.

There are about 5-6 properties that I can see connected, but they are still not rolling out generally - best any provider can offer is 70Mb, so I'm stuck with Virgin.

Starting to get annoying....

Finally been notified that I can order CityFibre.

Anyone use the 900/900 offering with a TP-Link TL-R605 flashed with OpenWRT? I want to use SQM but don't know if that device will be powerful enough.

I couldn't find much on that TP-Link besides a reddit comment: "The R605 is running a slightly modified version of OpenWRT, albeit a super old version 14.07 which was released 7 years ago"

It's not actually got official OpenWRT support and that reddit comment was made 3 years ago. Version 14 also came out in 2014 so makes sense (7+3). Time to update that router.

For SQM on a line like that the only option is a router with a MT7986 SoC. Look into the GL-MT6000 currently on sale for £115 or do what I did and wait for someone to auction off their Hyperoptic branded Zyxel hardware. They have a EX5601 which is basically a GL-MT6000 (same SoC and RAM). Can be had for under £60 if willing to wait for one to pop up.

Thanks, those look great and I'll keep an eye out for the Hyperoptic one.

If it opens up other options, I have no need for on-router WiFi (have Unifi APs).

Only thing I can think of would be something like a N100 box e.g: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/cwwk-topton-n100-mini-pc-router-experience.18991381/

Install OpenWRT then connect up the APs. Will also easily handle SQM. I'm not totally sure on local availability though seems more a "just order from China" thing.
