Civilization V

I started a game with the Babylonians yesterday. And found myself too late to found a Pantheon/Religion.

Are games pretty much screwed if you do not go into Religion? Surely you can focus your building efforts towards other non religious buildings/units etc?

Has anyone tested out the multiplayer AI on Brave New World? I used to love playing with mates against the AI i multiplayer from Call to Power all the way to Civ 4 but civ 5 (which I love in single player) has the worse ai in multiplayer. Most of the times it will just sit there and hardly expand or build troops or research. Every now and again, we would get a decentish game out of it but for the most part the AI is non existant. If anyone ca provide feed back, that would be great. A quick google shows that not much improvement has bee made with the first expansion but nothing about this expansion.

A friend and I were playing multiplayer over LAN recently and all was fine for a while. Then we started to notice that our research/wonder pop-ups were not the same, and then we compared maps and realised that each of our civs, on the other player's map, had gone AI and that we were playing alone for over an hour without realising! Our connection was still up and running fine at full strength, any ideas what might have caused this?

One of you lost connection at some point and you didn't notice :). If you click on the score list it should expand and show pings, should make it easier to spot the other human players.

Ah ok. Thanks, will certainly keep an eye on that in the future.

This game is certainly much more fun in multiplayer.

I found the single player to get old very quickly (much like I did with Civ 3), despited having played Civ 2 & 4 for hundreds of hours in single player... I think it was the way they did the navy that bothered me. I prefer embarking units onto transport ships and then trying to protect them as they travel across the ocean :) Many games in Civ4 where I was king of the seas haha.

G&K did make things more interesting, and I'm looking forward to the BNW :)

Very unlucky then as it happened last night again, 4th time in a row I'm attacked between turn 80 and 100. This time I managed to hold my ground with a stronger military though, but it still feels scripted...

Yeah most times their is a skirmish early on, I generally make rule of thumb. As soon as I get chariot archers I make one for each city and use the social policies to off set the cost. park an extra one at your borders with an aggressive AI and road all your cities.

You can then be placed to move a mass of ranged units to keep back and attack that can move massively fast. I tend to find ranged is king in this game early on.

Ah crap, I thought it was out already :o Still another 3 weeks till it comes out

Was the AI in multiplayer improved in G&K?

Cant say I've had any issues with the AI sitting back on Prince level, I've even added a mod on to stop city spamming by increasing city settling range up to 6 hex tiles away from each other.

Was that in multiplayer though? In single player, I've had no problems with the AI, only in multiplayer. Its frustrating because I used to play civ 4 with friends and had some epic games against the AI. By the looks of it, I'll just have to wait and see

It doesn't vet any easier latter on either, I'm playing on prince with Austria and in my game Greece are super powerful and this is at turn 300. There rushing through the tech tree and I can bearly keep up and trying to attack their cities is next to impossible as they have 155 gold they can buy units and will and purchase walls and castle's as soon as the turn goes. I'm mid game and I'm thinkingn of starting over.

The difference between 3 and 4 difficulty seems quite big in g&k.

Religions just add small passive bonuses to your empire, it isn't needed but for having an optimized empire it's very handy. Such as bonus growth in all cities, bonus production, battle bonuses in your home land and so on.

I continued with my game and Im quite impressed with the Babylonians, great defensive Civ, researching to get better tech, build it and then go on a full rampage across the continent.
And thats without religion!

Heh they are okay but they have rubbish exclusive troops, you won't be using the archers for long. Germany/France are better for war focused empires, religion is more powerful when you use it for war based bonuses by the way. I wonder if they are trying to say something by that? :D

I find the best Civ for warring is China. Those Chu-No-Ku archers just annihilate entire waves of enemies like wet tissues.

Best off planning for late game though. It's the same with the Spartans for Greece, they are awesome sauce for like the first 20 turns lol. China though, are amazing for their great generals. I still wouldn't like to go against Civs with exclusive modern troops though even with those generals. French Foreign Legion & Musketeers are monstrously overpowered for their times and will be on the field much longer before they are obsolete.

You can get mods though that edit troop building time to be as fast as Quick time setting and play on Marathon, which makes the early game exclusive units more fun to play as. I love Spartans so I spent quite a while as Greece when I first got the game (my first Civ :p) and the Barbarians were using pikes by 2000BC, was in for a nasty surprise and found myself getting battered by exclusive troops most of the game. That being said though, with the anti-Barbarian social policy the Hoplites did rinse through their Pikemen pretty quickly.

which mod is that then? i like always war so use a mod to make that happen (and raging barbs), sounds like it would be pretty insane with loads of troops!

It's actually called that or something similar, on the Steam Workshop, 'quick speed units' or something along those lines, there are normal, epic and marathon speed troop mods too.

Bought this game 2 weeks ago and it's amazing haha. First turn-based game I've ever played. Was about to go to bed at 1am but got talking to a friend about Civ5 and then fancied having a go after talking about it. Played till 6AM and won a cultural victory :o

This game is soooooooooo addictive it's great.

I LOVE babylon. Science victory is easy peasy.

Also did a 100% random game.

Ended up in a duel as Ethiopia. I went for religion and globilization. Alexander declared war so many times with much vaster armies and I slaughtered him because you get a 15% bonus against any bigger civ. What an awesome game this is.

Playing as Austria on prince, I found trying to attack other cities very, very diffcult until bombers become available. I have 6 in total and I can take any city out regardless of its defences, there also great for repealing counter attacks and for city defence.
