Civilization V

Just finished my first game, my god was that boring!

OK, I take it back :p

Playing second game (Mongols, continents, normal) and I've been constantly at war since about turn 5. Decided to go all out militarily and knocked out Germany and a couple of city states early on, but have since been tag-teamed by France and Persia who simultaneously declared war and I spent about 30 turns fighting on two fronts. Managed to fend off Persia 3 times and counter attacked against France, taken 3 of Napoleon's cities, just Paris left. Need it to fall soon before Persia can regroup and launch their 4th offensive.

This is more like it!
 
Can anyone advise on when razing cities is useful? So far I've been annexing them unless my happiness is low, in which case I just have them as puppets until I've got some spare happiness.
 
It's for civilizations that are weak culturally as puppeted cities still up the policy cost by 10% each same as an annexed/home city. Also for roleplaying I guess, if you're running a leader like Khan or Atilla and want to feel like you've just scourged the earth. :p

Playing Khan at the moment but in more of a 'bending everyone to my will' mood than all out destruction. Definitely going to raze Persepolis if I ever manage to take it though, Darius is doing my head in.
 
How are people dealing with gold now? I can deal with the harsher unhappiness and I have to admit I perfer the extra unhappiness. But I am constantly running at -40 gold, no science. (Playing on King)

Trade routes are barely bringing anything in and establishing trade is hard with the amount of barbarians which require units which means no money. That and with no city states or AI players near by all I can trade for is food.

Most tiles no longer give gold and I run out of gold long before I have the science to get markets as I have to fight of barbarians.


EDIT: (this isn’t criticism, loving the new changes just not adapted to them yet.)

I LOVE how it says 'they dislike warmongers' next to Shaka of the Zulus, when he declared war on me and lost. I'm honestly furious right now but I guess I should be used to it?

Actually I've found gold reasonably ok to come by. Started out on the YnAEMP huge earth as Britain (not England) with a view to playing reasonably historically; i.e. focused on trade. At first I was only running about even on my first two early trade routes (sea) due to the 4 triremes I needed to protect them. As the cities and nations grow however, pirates become less of a problem, especially around the baltic and med and the routes become much more lucrative.

Then with East India Company (which I founded around 1000 years before the real one :D) you get an auto 4 gpt boost plus an extra 4 gpt for every civ the sends a trade route to you. As far as I know, trade routes coming in are unlimited. Not even researched banking yet (nor have I built national treasury) and I'm raking in 80 gpt. Admittedly, I only have two land military units. :D

Culture on the other hand, I never seem to find very easy to come by.

Always interesting how people view civ. Culture I have no problem with as I play Celtic who for the past 4 games started with almost every city with 3 to 6 Pastures each one giving 1 culture due to religion upgrades. Must be some sort of start bias as I always get pastures and forest.

Yep, all Civ's have heavy start bias that relates them to a 'real world' sensible resource. England for example seems to get Copper all the time.

You can disable it in the advanced options when making a game.
 
During my game last night (prince difficulty) I was leading a resounding cultural victory and my economy was strong. I was into the endgame in the year 2025, upto this point I hadn't declared war or fought against any civilization for the entire game. I wanted to use culture and diplomacy only to win.

My diplomacy status with others civs was set to Friendly and I was in the green with all of them (with only a few past red negatives on a couple of weaker civs, nothing too serious.) However Persia was starting to annoy me, they were basically on a conquest to destroy all of the worlds city-states and they had a greater army than mine. Other civs were getting angry too, so I used the world congress to create an embargo against them to huge success and applaud by everyone.

Anyway, Persia didn't like it and for many turns later our relationship was getting worse and their war machine continued to rage. They had captured Moscow from Russia (my friend for nearly the entire game) and showed no signs of slowing down. Eventually they threatened me with nuclear war and by that point, I had enough. I began making a huge army, navy, allied military city-states and was about to launch a D-Day-esque assault on their shores to liberate Moscow... but then...

Somewhere between the year 2018-2025 the AI went completely bonkers. It was like they hit the reset button and all of the established history and personalities went out of the window.

Eternal enemies suddenly became friends, Persia, who had a couple of turns ago threatened me with nuclear war suddenly wanted to be my friend and were set to "Friendly" with no red negative history in the diplomacy box after years of back and forth goading. Austria who had pretty much been my main concern regarding culture and diplomacy, and where friends with many of the biggest civs and leader of the UN, had now become world enemy no.1 for no reason.

I ended up not launching my war and won quite comfortably in the end. But the AI going nuts right at the end was disappointing. Has anyone else found this? I had a similar problem when G&Ks first came out but it got fixed eventually.

Steam are now giving away a free copy of Civ IV to all those that pre-ordered Brave New World. This is to apologise for them putting BNW in the summer sale on day 1 of release at cheaper than the pre-order price.

I'd rather get the £4 into my steam wallet as I'll probably never play Civ IV but at least it's something and they acknowledged their mistake.

Been having a mess around with the Shoshone. They seem incredibly broken early game. Spam about 4 Pathfinders, hoover up every ruin, get so much free stuff (that you can pick!) and your 4 Pathfinders are a pretty good standing army for early game. I can definitely see them getting nerfed in a patch.
 
Not really, the Shoshone have nothing late game. Once you pass ancient era, their abilities are no longer useful. Even the excess land you get from the cities isn't that good as you can't work everything that quickly.

Other Civ's can just buy a few tiles so it only saves a tiny bit of gold.

Besides, it's really hit and miss. Sometimes you can pick the Shoshone and only find one ruin.

Most broken of the new Civ's to me is Venice. Being able to buy city states for free is pretty crazy! It's like Austria on steroids.
 
Made it to around 1740 without a hint of war anywhere. Had a couple of requests to help take nations down but they never came to anything once I rejected.

So I got bored and decided to kick some ass and go for a domination win instead of science. 2 capitals taken out so far without even losing a unit. One of the nations was literally a single square island sandwiched between two other nations. Feeble! London is next on my hitlist.

What they are able to do in early game pretty much puts them so far ahead it'll last well beyond Ancient. If you play it right I doubt anyone will catch you until late Medieval.

Just had a quick go there for testing. By turn 25 I had the following extras from ruins:

2 Composite Bowmen (because Pathfinders upgrade those)
2 free technologies (Pottery and Calendar)
30 Culture
20 Religion
1 free citizen
60 gold from finding 4 CS's before others did

I was ranked 1 - 2 in everything on demographics. It allowed me to get the first Pantheon pick and by turn 29 I had 3 policy picks done. I also had 250 gold in the bank. Could have bought another Pathfinder and went and lynched another Civ with 2x Composite Bowmen and 2x Pathfinders.

Yeah, their Great Merchants are "Merchants of Venice". You simply walk them over to a CS, press a button and that CS now becomes your puppet city.

Oooh, but don't they only get two merchants of Venice? One in a certain era and one from the liberty tree? Not sure though, when I played Venice I wasn't generating great people all that fast and fell to Genghis & Hitler pretty quickly. :p
