Civilization V

Is there the ability to alter the research/production/gold rate in the game?
Good question
so far, the city screen, no more white circles
BUT get this...
you can BUY tiles!! ;) That's really fun, and money dollars generate fast
You can even buy units without waiting that's a but against IV tradition but it's damn useful and efficient.

Overall I think it's excellent, lots of nice touches that I used to find an absolute drag in other civs. Example moving armies across the oceans used to really grate and made me give games up in the past. The 1 unit per tile doesn't affect me as I was never a fan of the stack of doom and didn't use that in my games anyway. It's now a bonus that the CPU can't do it to me either now :)

The only downside to this though is moving all these single units about can be time consuming.

The AI is broken atm. For a few moments there it played superbly, totally caught me off guard and captured two key cities I couldn't believe how devious it was, it was great! :) But then it went pear shaped as when I captured them back the CPU offered a truce, even though I was still very vulnerable he offered me all his gold, all his luxuries and also 4 of his 8 remaining cities, wtf?!

I just started another game and killed Ghandi without him attacking a single one of my units. I had an archer next to his pikeman and he just fortified him while my other units took his capital... useless.

Bit of a noob question, I know you can choose an Earth map, but is there a way to start off in the correct region for each leader?

i.e. Elizabeth starts off in England and not Africa?

I'd have to agree with Biohazard (?) that the whole purchasing tiles thing was a bit stupid, seriously who are you giving the money to? Its nice to be able to extend your boundary to include certain valuable areas of land but surely thats why positioning your city well is crucial?
Buying units is sweet but you can't part build it and rush the rest which is irritating.

Having given it another couple of days I find the early stages of the game to be so incredibly slow. It's almost as if the game doesn't want you doing much. Things look as though they pick up a little further in to the medieval period, but by then I got fed up. Combat, while obviously better than the stack o' doom model, is still frustrating when it takes so long to build anything, and of course rushing production is a no no too.:(

I can also see now why they didn't bother with wonder movies. ;) I've built one, and haven't even got close with any others. And if you do lose, well kiss the wasted production goodbye too, so what's the point?

There are custom maps on civfanatics.com which do that.

I tried the huge earth map from Civ Fanatics. It got just a tad crowded in Europe with all those irritaing City States. Some civs couldn't even settle in my game. :D

i agree that the ai is a tad too easy. I took over a game from my brother on prince, he tried to play like civ 4 and was doing balls. He didnt attack anyone and had the smallest army. His score i think was 400ish and the ai had 4 people higher then him with scores ranging from 700 and 950. Even our war advisor was scared telling us not to start any wars or we'll get creamed.
As you guessed one of the top ai decided he like to take our cities off us  . He had a score of 800, tons of gold and a massive army and all i had was a wimp army and 1 military city state, thought i was gona get creamed. Luck for me the ai was as good as 300's zerksis smashing his army against my well defended borders. After a few turn the waves of attackers thinned out, and i was offered a peace treaty with near all of his cities (where i saw he had no gold left), i declined and went on the offensive. Now my war advisor was stating we should easily wipe them out (how crap of a advisor is he).
Long story short conqured them, went to the next civilization did the same so on and so on. Its as if without the SOD the ai is a real pushover. They just attack head on against well fortified locations and get creamed :/ . Hopefully a update will change that, I liked it when war was dangerous as the ai could sent over a SOD and take a few of your cities as it stands now the ai is just terrible at war.

My first playthrough was very enjoyable and my second is going well. Personally I think the quite dramatic changes to some of the cores aspects of the game are very welcome and it's something fresh. I think with further support and a few decent expansions we'll see it come into its own but I think it's better than CivIV was at launch.

Just finished my 2nd proper go ramped the difficulty up and still i guess it needs to be higher still.

I attacked England, i was playing as greeks i think , and all they sent at me was waves of workers and settlers... i actually lold as i hoovered them all up... what a ****ed up game....
i hope somethign is patched soon so many weird moments

Im also getting pee'd off with the pathing were i tell a unit to attack and it will go on the most bizarre embarking route possible and take 6 turns to go 1 tile

also having insane trouble balancing happiness seems like all i do is work on keeping it positive most of the game.. i guess im gonna need to study the civics page abit more i must be going wrong there.

Its growing on me

Just had a cultural win with 1 city as Ghandi to get the Bollywood achievement. Was quite good fun, its amazing how much land you can take control of with just 1 city and high culture!

Right I got my self a copy of this today (after shouting at Amazon for taking money 3 months ago for it then trying to recharge me on thursday to a debit card with no money on it) and I love the look and set up of it!

Just one huge problem, every couple of hours the game crashes and corrupts the save! Cant really describe how frustrating this is and I hope there is a cure as id love to see past the classical era... (and stop my mbp overheating like a beast!)

Makes sense to me, history is littered with wars because of religion. Though if it was me I'd build an atheist army and destroy both of them just because they are Buddhist and jew :)

Atheist armies wouldnt stand up to vassalae + theocratic armies though :p

Also, organised religion was far too powerful in Civ 4 to manage without it.

Mine would because they would have no morals and no sense of right and wrong and so would deploy every known means in order to win :) Can be full of religious fervour all they want, not going to help them when I mustard gas the lot of them :D

But thats Civ 4 and we are talking about Civ 5. Theres no reason why we couldnt have the specific religions still , just handled in a different way.

Are even the autosaves corrupted? There is a button for autosaves at the top right of the load screen - might wanna try them? Otherwise, all I can suggestis trying the official forums, they're quite busy so you may find someone having the same issue with a solution.

As for myself, I'm enjoying playing as the Japanese - although I shifted the difficulty up to Prince and it's proving tough. Started on the perfect island - large and lush, just myself an Alexander - and his score is way higher than mine - and his military is huge! There's no way I can fight him :D

Sums it up perfectly. It's like the AI's get a hammer bonus when you're almost complete on a wonder.

How would the following system cope with this:

(My Macbook Pro)

2.66 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (P8800)
4 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT

Also will it perform better on Windows XP, or Windows 7? Or no difference?

Thanks

I'd test out the demo tbh. Civ is a serious CPU hog and your graphics card is slightly sub par for recommended requirements but that shouldn't matter a great deal and you should probably have room to lower/raise them slightly. 2.66GHz is a lot better than the min but since Civ will use all cores properly its probably a lot worse than the 1.8GHz quad it recommends. It should run smoothly, it might slow down later game.

Yeah im going to have a look on the official ones later, just gave up last night for a bit after seeing a few people with random crashes too, might jsut be my mac overheating....

Thats what im running it on too :D (love my mbp) stick on win 7 for dx10 (the 9600 doesnt do dx11) which makes it looks a bit better but you find the 9600 starts to look very long in the tooth with the game (first game iv really noticed it in) so most things will be on medium-low to get it to run. Got a feeling a patch will be out to calm down how much hot it makes your graphics card too.... CPU and ram wise you'll be fine there though!

You'll need a spare mouse though as the touch pad drivers for windows arnt perfect for right clicking
