Civilization VI

Same thing happened when CIV5 was released, it was compared to the fully fleshed out CIV4 with 3(?) expansions while completely forgetting CIV4 has a similar amount of content that 5 had when it was released.

Wingers winged, then when 6 came out it was a rinse and repeat.

It’s pretty much how this franchise has worked since it started. Base game is released with about half the content of the ‘final version’ and its fleshed out with a couple of expansions.

I even enjoyed playing the beyond Earth game but wingers really winged about that one so it didn’t get as much love from the developer.

You mean since Civ 4. Civ 1 didn't have expansions, and Civ 2 and 3 only added a couple of scenario packs. And all of those games were feature complete on launch except Civ 3 needed an expansion for online multiplayer.

That probably shows that I only started playing CIV with IV! The point still stands though, the negativity around VI was exactly the same as V because it was being compared to a game that had numerous expansion packs to the base game.

Not me. I was quite vocal in this thread long before it came out, highlighting tiny maps sizes and the very small volume of units in the game. Hallmarks which are seriously indicative of console designs.

Since you can play it on just about any medium, I was right to call it out for what it is.

A console game.

I'm hoping for a Civ VII at some point down the road, the Civ games have been a staple of my collection ever since Civ 1. According to my steam stats, I notched up 229 hours in Civ 5 and a huge 1,058 hours in Civ 6. Shame that my Civ 4 stats arent on there as I imagine thats pretty high too.

CIV5 vanilla is still better game than CIV6 after all those years and DLCs. CIV6 is just Civ Rev for PCs.

And since I moved to EU4 (and now Imperator), CIV & TW games feel simple designed for children.

I guess I must be a child, then. So far, I've found it complex and interesting enough to draw me in for hours on end.

It's not like I'm new to the franchise, either. Played Civ1 when I was younger, really got into Civ2 (still recall most of the music and sound effects :D) and Civ3. I remember when Civ4 came along and that was considered at the time to be a bit of a dumbing down, with the day-glo graphics and pretty animations; and that is now considered by some to be a high-point of the series.

The thing is, with Civ4, I couldn't put it down, and I kept coming back to it time and time again...I didn't get that same feeling with Civ5, not until I installed the Vox Populli mod, and even then, I rarely had the "just one more turn..." feeling. So to get that back on my first game of Civ6 is quite nice.

I haven't tried EU yet, but if the lockdown goes on for much longer, perhaps I'll pick it up to while away some more hours :)

I am in a similar boat. I played about 100hrs of civ4, about 650hrs of civ5 and have recently passed 600hrs of Civ6. I really like how they play, even if I think the AI is rather stupid at times. Maybe they are not the most complex games but that suits me for what I want from a civ game.

Heh, trust me I was playing CIV games since 1992 and includes colonization, alpha centuri and beyond earth. Total war games also for almost 20 years.

Then I put my hands on EU4. For no other game have gone to lan party to a castle in another country..........

The CIV6 AI is dumb and the game cheats when playing on speed higher than normal. The AI isn't affected at all on marathon speed, churning units and building as in normal speed with the added bonuses of difficulty levels. Only the player is affected and crippled. That wasn't the case in CIV5 or CIV4 and so on, or any other spin off before CIV6.

All those years have passed and the only consern of Firaxis is to release DLCs, which overlap and make the previous one redudant without fixing simple things like the AI shouldn't go next to your town and colonize, while crying you build close to them. Or insulting you and becoming angry because you do not have a tech that even itself doesn't have while is 1000 turns away. eg Economics while it is on 3000BC. (a bright example).

Nor moves units twice-thrice as fast when you do not see them, overlapping them and giving them an extra move if there is another unit there. (that was issue on CIV5 also, as they never coded for the 1upt properly).

I do play EU4 and Imperator and Stellaris but I dont enjoy them as much as the Civ games (few hundred hours in Paradox titles, few thousand in total in Civ). They are more complicated for sure but sometimes (for me at least) , more complication results in less enjoyment. Thats just who I am though, I prefer to see and laugh at Ade Edmondson and Rik Mayall hitting each other , farting at each other and doing **** gags than Stewart Lee's more intellectual humour. I find them both funny but if I picked one to have to spend a night out with mates having a laugh, it would be the former rather than the latter. I suspect thats why I prefer Civ over EU, even though I like both for different reasons.

Released Oct 2016. Gathering Storm only came out in August.

Later than I thought. But Civ 5 was released September 2010 and the last expansion came out in July 2013. So we're talking about a cycle just shy of three years, with the next game going into development around the same time as the last expansion for the current game is launched (Civ 6 was known to be in development by mid-2013). Civ 6 was on a shorter cycle - Gathering Storm actually came out in February 2019 - but it's almost certain that Civ 7 is in development now for release in (probably) late 2022.

Civ 6 feels complete now, and it must be pushing five years old. Civ 7 seems likely to be on the horizon in a year or two.

Is that Civ 6 complete with all the DLCs? I’ve only got the original and I haven’t really given it a chance as my love for Civ 5 is too strong :p

Its not complete just last weekend I was playing a multiplayer game and everyone in that game agree its missing features. It better after the 2nd expansion but still not as good as Civ 5 and the AI is a major let down.
