I've only just started playing this can anyone give me some useful tips? At the moment im just creating a lot of gold and elixir and slowly building up some more troops.

upgrade collectors first. then boost them for 1 gem each available at the moment...!
 
At the beginning just get used to how the game works. I'd strongly recommend in the early levels to upgrade everything to maximum level before upgrading your town hall.

Save your gems, don't spend them because it doesn't take long to get to 500 for the extra builder.

Takes me ages just to get 50! I play every day and dig tree's and bushes and get 5 gems here and there. Get a gem basket very raillery though.

I guess it depends on what you consider to be "not long" :p

It would take a few weeks, that's for sure. Things are much better now since gem boxes and since they increased the amount of gems you receive from trees/shrubs etc.
 
Update this morning introducing the lava hound in dark barracks and upgrading walls with either gold or elixir after level 6.
 
Currently Town hall on Lvl 4 but everytime i get attacked i lose. I have most defenses already, is the best way to protect my gold to upgrade all archers & cannons to max level?
 
Until you get to a much higher TH lvl you will mostly lose. The best i can say is raid hard for your loot and spend it quick.
 
Put your storage buildings inside the walls and divide the areas they're in. If you have them in one enclosure, a single wall break means they can rob the lot.
 
Tbh, at your TH level you won't be able to defend if they are too strong.

But get your TH outside your walls. We keep telling you
