COD Black Ops looks pretty good on PC

Only 4 reasons for this, 1) All servers are down 2) Your connection (router and/or software firewalls blocking) 3) You are VAC banned. 4) Reset server filters. For some after the last patch, default is search for modded servers only (aye daft, there aren't any yet).

I used to have a problem where I allways had 'Lost connection to Host' shortly after the game came out it was so bad I gave up didnt play it for a few months until they released a patch which solved the problem and it went away over night.

Alas now with the new patch its returned, I have not been able to connect to a single game allways getting 'Lost connection to host'

Any ideas? I have tried temporarily disabling firewalls etc and nothing!

Try reducing cl_maxppf in your mp_config.cfg to 1-2 (it will make browsing for servers slow) default is 5 which can overload some routers.

Is this just Black Ops? Is your net connection otherwise stable?

I noticed after the last patch (1.08) I was getting an insane amount of lag at the start of every round. Tried a few things but ended up swapping out the router and that solved things (old router ca. 4 yrs old). There are however certain setups that hate Black Ops, for example, if you have an SPI firewall enabled and especially if you log events.

New patch 1.09 just seems to have sharpened everything right up for me again. Feels like COD4 and 5 ... at last.

You shouldn't have to, but open up these ports.

Another possible fix is to delete ClientRegistry.blob located in main Steam install folder.

Another possible fix is to open up steam, go to your list of installed games, right-click on your Black Ops MP, properties, files and verify cache. After that, defrag.

Another possible fix is to find players folder which is located in steam/steamapps/common/call of duty black ops and delete the config_mp file. Not so much this IMO but it will default the game back to it's original state and auto-create a new file once you start the game. You would have to re-enter your custom config etc.

f I can think of anything else, I'll tell you.

auraindigo thank you so much for taking the time to go through this...it has restored my sanity after 2 days scratching my head and hoping it would resolve itself.
StarBar:D

Yeah Black Ops looks good but the PC version is badly optimized! The game was designed with the Xbox 360 and the PS3 in mind. Its its made by Treyarch and their COD games have never been good. Black Ops runs fine on my PC on high settings but i dont get the 80FPS i got in COD MW and MW2 on high settings!! :(

It sure is, in fact I'm well pleased with all the new maps, graphics are excellent, clean and crisp.

DL'd and installed last night, can't wait to try it them out :D

Oh, I still get the error message I posted above... It's really wierd!
My Steam account's fine, my games varified, my connection's fine and my firewall doesn't change anything...

I know all this as I've found out that if I close the message (which pops up on starting the game) then click on 'Play' or 'Operations' then, 8/10 times, it does the 'fetching stats' bit and I can play normally.

VERY strange 0_o

Does anyone else get some severe stuttering every time a map loads up? I have the same problem with BFBC2, the first 10-15 seconds are stuttering then it runs smoothly for the rest of the match...

Pound to a penny this is network related. Took me ages to suss out but the fix for me was stop logging and (custom Netgear firmware) totally disable SPI firewall. For some reason, Blops sends out loads of data at the beginning of each round that the SPI firewall obviously analyses and it takes it's toll on the router. Same thing was happening with server browser. Used to be fine until iirc two patches ago. Fine now though.

BTW, we got a server running just the 4 new maps this weekend (please don't treat as spam, server is bought and paid for and we don't care if it's empty tonight anyway, we're goin to the pub!):

It's running HC HQ atm but shout up in the next hour and I can run anything you like on it.

I'm not entirely sure how to fix it... I'm connected to a Buffalo wireless router, but we're running the stock SSID, password and everything because honestly I don't have a clue to change any of the settings (and I consider myself a bit of a computer buff) :p

I find pretty much everything that's wireless a chore and a hassle. I don't understand why every company - including Microsoft, surprisingly, with their jump-through-hoops homegroup nonsense - likes to make it so difficult to get a home network up and running and working how it should do...

Any advice on how I'd go about sorting this out? I could deal with it at first but it's irritating as hell now

LOL don't like this game to be honest, I think I am too used to Bad Company 2 and I cannot go back to anything Call of Duty now - the graphics look too cartoonish to be honest, there is no spawn structure in the maps, same old same old as well. I am glad I have refrained myself from buying this.

I might get Black Ops from Steam as it is now at a reduced price of £26.99 instead of the £39.99 that it's been since it's release.

No way, don't give these people the satisfaction. I know you don't have to get the map packs but you know what I mean if you want to have the most complete up-to-date game.

£26.99 + £11.49 + £11.49 = £49.97

Besides anyway, it's a steamworks game so you could even get it from the rainforest for cheaper price than that.

I support these mathematics, but then I'm a grumpy ex-CoD player.
