Coffee machines, Tassimo or Nespresso?

I have a Tassimo machine, have tried most of the coffees in there, which range from awful to bang-average at best, and I am not a coffee snob at all (McDonalds coffee being one of my favourites!)
I tried a Nespresso coffee, Livanto to be exact, and it was absolutely gorgeous, so will be moving over to a Nespresso machine.

The tassimo is handy for the multi drinks choice, but from most of them I've tried, they pretty much are nothing special, and half the time you get half a cups worth, which is quite annoying with things like hot chocolates, sure you can press the button to keep it longer, but you just make it more watery like that, or use 2 pods, but doing that is expensive!

Shamefully to some, the Earl Grey tassimo I find decent! The rest of the different drink choices, could happily ignore, so if your main drink will be coffee, i'd say Nespresso, as the Dolce Gusto will just be the same as the tassimo I would expect.

Tassimo here too, only use the Columbian pods tho as the rest are pretty weak. Nespresso seems better and pods are cheaper.Mcdonalds is also my fav coffee, even tried to buy some but they import the beans in and roast themselves.

I still use mine frequently, but the quality of some of the drinks has dropped since they switched to the newer style discs.

I've seen MCDonalds Tassimo discs in Canada, funnily enough.

I bought a Tassimo last year for use in work, still using it sparingly, but I was very dissapointed with the coffee and still am.

At home I have Dolce Gusto machine, the difference between the two imo is immense. I've gone from having a tea every morning for 20+ years to having a coffee instead. I now buy 50 coffee pods from Amazon, it works out much cheaper. Put the cup with milk in the microwave for a minute then add the coffee.

anyone got a Nescafe Dolce Gusto?
and bear with me, any idea what happens if you use the cold option on a normal coffee pod? does it brew because of the pressure or does it do nothing. basically want to get iced coffee, or would i need to add a shed load of ice to the cup and call the hot brew down.
there iced pods aren't suitable don't want the sugar and other stuff they add.
also how much does a singlepod actually make, can you get a large mug out of a single pod, or is that realy weak.

Dolce Gusto is apparently the gimmicky machine. Nespresso is the one if you want a semi decent coffee. Colonna do the best capsules but they aint cheap at 55p-85p per shot compared to 30p-35p for nespresso or crukafe shots.

The way it works is I think nespresso has 5.5g of coffee grounds so with that you only get enough of a shot for like half a normal sized mug of mixed (with milk). You would need to use 2 for a large mug mixed with milk, you could use 1 but it would be really weak. You could pour 2 shots from 1 but the second shot is mainly garbage.

The official recipe from nespresso is hot shot into a cup full of ice cubes and then add cold (optionally frothy) milk. So I imagine it's the same for dolce gusto.

No idea about "cold shot" nespresso doesn't have that option.

thanks, not surprised, they are cheaper. Got a £25 amazon voucher burning a hole. but if that's the case think ill stay away from Dolce Gusto, shame the pods aren't larger.

You need to type nespresso into HUKD (Hot UK Deals). You can get a machine with an aerocinno for £69.99 that comes with 3 x £25 off vouchers to use on the nespresso site. You also get a free gift with your first order (usually a set of cups or pod holder, etc).

It's the best way to buy a machine. The same offer is on every year. So you can sell your machine after a year for £40 used and then buy another for £70 and then get 3 x £25 vouchers again to use on nespresso but this time you won't get the free gift unless you make a new account (another email address).

Rinse and repeat every year until promotion ends. Essentially you lose £30 a year but get £75 worth of free capsules and the free gift usually worth about £10-£20. You also get a brand new machine every year to boot which usually comes with a 3 year warranty.

I make iced coffee almost every day. I just make a shot of espresso in my Silvia and add some ice. Normally it is with a load of milk as a post-run recovery drink.

No need for cold-brew coffee an iced.

curious about the economics of nespresso -
a capsule apparently has 7g of coffee, they are about 30p each off of nespresso store so about 600g total of coffee and ~80 drinks from a £25 voucher,
the same quantity of coffee for a portafilter espresso machine costs maybe £8, so there is a large markup of £17.

If you drank 3 a day, so about 80 a month costing £25 ! could have invested over a year 17*12 about £200 in an pf espresso machine and drank the same amount of coffee.

maybe there is an error in my calculations but Mr Clooneys getting rich.

probably right, people have made reusable pods available from amazon etc, that you can refill with anything you like.

but your paying for convenience and its still far cheaper than costa etc.

i don't think it's healthy to drink 3 a day all your doing is building up your tolerance so you then need more for the same hit. i drink the stuff maybe once every few days.

also nespresso is all about the convenience factor. i don't need to do anything apart from press a button and there you have it coffee. with the pf machine you have to grind, clean rubbish up, then clean all the different things you have used. also how quickly could you make 10 coffees if you had guests round? with nespresso all you need to do is throw in a capsule and press a button and wait a few seconds. with a pf machine you would be run ragged.

your paying for convenience. also the nespresso coffee is like middle of the road in taste. crukafe is better and they usually do deals when it's 20p a shot and then i bulk buy. the best though is colonna coffee but that is 50-80p a shot very expensive but your paying for convenience and the best capsule coffee.

nobody i know wants to be faffing about with a pf machine. they want to press a button and have coffee. pf machines are for enthusiasts who want to mess about with all their different grind settings and ratios etc. some people just want half decent coffee at the push of a button.

I did not know there were high end nespresso capsules.

A heat-exchanger/double boiler espresso machine can knock out 10 cups,
is there some recovery time for a nespresso ?

maybe post-truth but

On average, Britons consume only 1.7 kg of coffee per year – one of the lowest amounts in Europe. As example, in 2013, Britons spent £730 million on coffee.

Top 5 Coffee Consuming Countries (per capita):

Finland – 9.6 kg
Norway – 7.2 kg
Netherlands – 6.7 kg
Slovenia – 6.1 kg
Austria – 5.5 kg

Gimoka has found that people in UK drink 70 million cups of coffee per day, compared to 165 million cups of tea. Average British male coffee drinker drinks 13 cups per week, while average British female coffee drinker drinks 11

( personally 3x15g dbl p/d ~15Kg + instant - oh.)

The high end ones aren't well known tbh because people who tend to buy capsule machines don't really care about the best.

It's the same for the masses in every sector. They don't care if it's the best tv, or the best soundbar, best mobile phone, so long as it's easy to use and looks good or marketed very well.

There is no recovery time for nespresso, you just pop another capsule in and push the button and you have another shot poured straight out.

The missus bought me a nespresso for xmas. Honestly, everything tasted crap and seemed like frothy instant. Not a patch on a decent filter / aeropress brew.

Needless to say I binned it and it ended up at her office. Good Riddance.
