Command & Conquer 4K remaster coming

  • Why have they not improved the AI? I don't see an excuse for this. I understand preserving the original for the sake of nostalgia, but keep it as an option with the new AI programmed also. It's actually even worse than the original on RA, because they have included custom maps with limited build space/ many bridges that the AI just can't deal with. So, even on 'hard' they just sit there, get clogged up and don't do anything. This annoyed me a lot, since they have access to much better AI engines in the more recent games that EA now own, it's just laziness.

Still. I paid money for it, so who am I to complain?

This is the biggest issue for me, I assumed (wrongly) that a remaster might have improved the 90's A.I but it really is frustrating that all the old quirks are still there.

It was acceptable back then because there wasn't much else in the RTS genre but now it's really dated and irritating.

Modders improved it in OpenRA - https://www.openra.net/download/
Well, the harvester AI at least. They don't start queueing up to dump ore at the same ref anyway

Unit clogging is an issue I’ve noticed as well. Was getting annoying with the submarines where only 1 or 2 where able to fire and the rest just sat there doing nothing. I also saw it with quite a few land units. Often not responding to attack commands.

The menu is full ultra-wide, the game maps have a black bar on the left of the screen, but you don't notice it.
The maps are small, so it's a none issue.

I forgot the enemy harvesters will quite happily change course and mow down an entire platoon of your infantry :D

Ah OK.

I've had a look at it on YT and it's not for me.

I'd sooner a rebuild (if that's the right term) than this.

RA Unplugged is worth a visit if you've not seen it before. It was supposed to be full fledged single player experience, but the chap sadly never had the time to get it off the ground. However, the AI he left behind is very good in comparison to Openra's. The AI expands bases, builds defences towards your direction, and uses super weapons. It is a cheaty AI, but is worth the challenge. The majority of players couldn't even beat 3 AI vs 1 player on open style maps. And the mod included a few new units that are subtle and done well. The mod is a stand alone installer so should always work regardless of Openra engine changes.

Thanks, i'll give it a look.
I generally don't like playing multiplayer vs AI. They are usually either rubbish, cheat (as you say) or just do dumb things or nothing different. Watching some of the guys (and Sarah) in OpenRA games / tournaments, there is no going back to AI really.
Of couse, you need the general unit AI, like harvesters

It would be interesting watching some of the top players again the AI you describe

What's the shortcut when creating units and designating them an area to deploy to directly from the barracks? Also is there a "guard" mode I can't recall so if an enemy approaches the units don't stand there like lemons and I'm manually having to get them to kill enemies. Brings back soo many good memories though!

You just press "G" to make them guard but there is no guard icon above their head, and it's pretty useless as they will still stand there and take rockets up the ass all day without moving sometimes, it's so bad I love it.
The way enemy tanks will zigzag across and splat your troops, when you can't even build tanks yourself yet, is totally not frustrating me at all.
I wouldn't change it for the world :D
It's not for everyone, but I couldn't ask for more - I don't even mind my own grenadiers killing half my own force, no, this is fine!

(remember to turn game speed up to fastest else your in for a long day)

Wow hard gets ridiculously hard, 20% damage and rate of fire for the enemy? Um you can't counter that when their is only so many resources to gather on the map, and I swear some enemy tanks are randomly produced to do nothing but plow your infantry down, you can't scatter them (X key) fast enough.

My smile is starting to straighten but I will persevere.

There's no waypoint / waypoint hotkey in this remake! This is (another) big negative for me because multiplayer relies on waypoints for barracks and war factory

My thoughts:

  • The graphics upgrade is nice. But tbh, the original graphics aren't that bad if you play at a half decent resolution and it's zoomed out appropriately. On this game, they have zoomed in more than usual and so the comparison between new and old is more extreme than it otherwise would be. Still, it's nice.

The AI has changed, its harder now. I now notice the AI is doing some micro managing of units, scattering from grenades, not approaching my base after I place a guard tower, instead hovering close to base but out of range of guard tower. Placing bazooka troops manually just out of range instead of just walking up to me, targeting vehicles specifically with bazooka instead of nearest unit.

Balance seems changed as well, in the original grenadiers murdered bazooka men as expected, but now enemy bazookas can sometimes match them one for one. But instead of a balance change it might just be a buff for the AI to make game harder. I am playing on normal so I wonder if casual is the old difficulty.

Also enemies dont suffer from same path finding issues as me. In addition they defenitly cheating but I cant remember if the cheating was in the original game as well, basically I observed during missing gdi 7 I think it is, they were pumping out new infantry extremely fast to the point I needed something like a 4 to 1 kill ratio in my favour. Also more then they could reasonably afford with their one harvester. So I then destroyed a wall to make a new entrance to their base, and got an engineer up there and had a guard tower pre built. Stole the nearest building which was a full silo, and immediately placed the guard tower, before i did this I notice the hand of nod was in range, so the idea was to kill their infantry before they could do anything, there was already a group of infantry there, so it was carnage early on both sides, as I had to place units there to be used as cannon fodder to protect the buildings I was popping up. Eventually I had complete control of the area, and I kid you not every 2-3 seconds a unit was popping out of the hand of nod, I had 2 barracks and I was producing slower. Most of these units were also flame troops or bazooka men so not the cheap 100 cost mini gunners. Whilst watching all this go on, their silo's were almost empty, the single harvester came back and filled its refinery and 3 silos in one load, its supposed to be 700 money from one load, but the enemy for 5500 from it. I cannot remember if they cheated like this in the original game, but the AI is definitely changed. However the AI is not as good as many modern RTS, where the AI is too good in my opinion, in this game its still very beatable. As the AI is cheating on money though I took advantage and captured all these filled silo's.

But overall i am enjoying it

Also a screenshot of my custom track list, the music in this game is awesome.

The one thing that annoys me with the game is I do prefer the old sound effect's these sound more artificial. I cant find an option to use the legacy sound effects.

They have improved it but thankfully not like modern RTA AI.

To be frank I found modern RTS AI way too difficult, to me AI in games should have quirks to compensate for the fact they have no thinking time. Otherwise it is too hard.

Especially as well in this game the AI is cheating 3-4x production speed and one harvester filling all of their silos in one go. (on normal).

I remember playing a newer RTS, age of empires II I think it was, and it felt like i was a playing a human player and the game was just too hard. It was micro managing like a pro starcraft player. Reacting to everything I did.

I think for sure it cheats on money, I'm playing through on hard for the steam achievement and it's eye watering.
but they do run out of money, I find a cheap tactic is to blow the enemy harvester up as it doesn't seem to replace it, (maybe it does later on in-game)

If I capture the refinery it will just build a new one, but take out the harvester and it will run out of monies lickety-splt.

It's the passive friendly AI that's just dumb as a bag of rocks, you have to micro manage all the small forces as a lot of the time they won't even return fire on their own.
Also I'm a monster that prefers to have the game music off.

yeah they can run out I destroyed the harvester in one of the missions and they eventually stopped building, so the visibility through the silos windows which shows how full they are is real, its just they get completely filled up from one harvester, each silos holds 1500, the refinery holds 1000, and harvester is supposed to hold 700.

The returning fire thing I think is a bug. Some of my units do it as well, occasionally AI doesnt shoot back, sometimes my units dont fight either, this issue wasnt in the original game (unless you blocked them via walls) so I think its a bug in this new one.
