Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

I'm leaving Windows and heading to Android. Mate has a Samsung tablet and It does all I need to do that I would normally do on a Win 8 device, except crash and blue screen and have configuration problems and viruses and malware and updates that cocck things up all the time!!!

I don't mind Windows 8 and I've been using it since release on my desktop but on my laptop it is intolerable when using a trackpad.

Sounds like user error and a windows installation run by someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

Am looking forward to the new update, Windows 8 has been fast, stable and very secure since using it on release.

If your PC does all that you're doing it wrong so something simpler like a tablet might indeed be more appropriate.

While watching a windowed video in MPC the other day all I wanted to do was open Notepad, Word, and the Calculator... Was a complete and utter pain in the arse...
Oh but the W8 fans will say: "But look at all these fantastic apps and you can snap FOUR apps on your screen! :D"

Windows button, "Notepad", enter
Windows button, "Word", enter
Windows button, "Calc", enter

Not sure how that is any less convenient than if you were doing it in Windows 7.

So hang on a minute... presumably you don't have those apps pinned to the taskbar (otherwise adding them to the Win+X menu would be redundant), but you wanted a quick way to access them *without* invoking Win8's wonderful Start Screen?

Hmmmm..... "ponders" ... perhaps Win+X could be made more discoverable and with some extra functionality thrown in, accessed with an ergonomically sound "see > point > click" left-button action, and called.... ah, got it..."The Start Menu." :)

Haha. :D

Or you could just pin them to the taskbar and make use of jumplists for both Notepad and Word.

It's not like you can't fit at least 25 shortcuts on the taskbar easily on a widescreen monitor (before they start reducing in size) ;)

LOL exactly.

Yes you can do that or even organise your Metro Columns with your own tiles etc..thats the great thing about Win8 its very customisable if some users bother to look into what you can do with 8.

I prefer a fairly clean taskbar so have customised it to my needs that way.

So the Start Button will be back in the next version of Windows? Rubbish DM article doesn't properly explain if that means the old type Start menu though:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencet...are-bid-stop-customers-defecting-tablets.html

The menu has gone and isn't returning.
It's just a button for the hot corner, which still exists.

But as the start button has always opened up start menu most people use it interchangeably and people like DM as well as some much bigger tech sites should be shot for confusing the subject.

Edit-

Actually that DM article is pretty good.
Although it will not be labelled 'start', it features the Windows logo and takes the user straight to a grid of applications.

I for one am glad that 8.1 features the start button and a default boot to desktop.
This will make the business rollout a lot easier for me.

This is a very good point it will make things easier, hadnt considered that as we are still rolling out win 7 at my work lol, i do hope they make it optional though at some point though for those that prefered win 8 as it was.
