Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

heres my 2 pence

1. Windows 8 is better than 7 - better security,speed,reliability
2. the start screen is still for media consumers (facebook/twitter/email) people
3. Microsoft introduced this badly, they should have introduced it in Windows 7 as a side app to see the thoughts of users & how they used it.
4. it was shoved in some users faces & they moan 24/7.
5. i like windows 8 but only use the desktop.
6. no need for a start bar make folder add shortcuts pinto taskbar - done?
7. people moaning about clicks to shutdown get a life.
8. charm bar is really handy for search

i think microsoft would have killed off a lot of the confusion if they had added a start button (not hidden it away like it is now) from the beginning

On a brighter note my ssd in my main pc died so I used the ssd from my laptop in it. I forgot to change the boot priority and it booted straight into windows 8 which was on the laptop ssd. There was just a quick configure screen and it installed all the drivers no problem at all :)

Yep, the newer versions of Windows are pretty amazing in tolerating hardware changes. Desktops, laptops, tablets, Intel, AMD, I've rolled the same image on the whole gamut and it doesn't seem to care. Serious problems i.e. failing to boot are few and far between.

+1

I agree with all your pennies :)

The return of the start menu is not what you'd expect... Fail.

Its for numpties that suddenly think they needed a tiny pop up menu in the corner, I honestly use W8 at home and in work and literally cannot fathom how anyone finds any problem with it.

For a lot of people it's not the case of wanting something suddenly. Many people prefer the flyout as evidenced by threads and posts all over tech forums where people do know what they want out of the box.

Can you explain that better?

Breaking down the process, its no different to what you physically have to do with the small start menu.

Click Start button
Menu Comes up.
Move mouse to click relevant pinned programme ( both having to Pin stuff in the Start Menu and Metro interface as to how you want them).
Click relevant programme
Opens up on desktop.

Works both ways, plenty of users including myself don't think you need it at all,you also have those that refuse to use Metro or customise it,thats their fault if they want to handicap themselves with Win8,look at a few Linux
Distro's plenty don't have a start tree as such like Win7 etc but you can still navigate fine.

Sometimes I think some users(not saying you) just want to find excuses why things should not change.

I can understand some complaints like reboot, shutdown etc could be in a better place but then you can easy customise those to Metro or old Desktop UI or even Win+x menu itself(let alone the keyboard shortcuts).
I do feel some users still want to be spoon fed and don't like change period, end of the day its not rocket science to use or customise Win8 which as you know is very easy to use.

Oh not to be misunderstood, change is a must but here was a situation where no option was given to have one or the other. Okay, third party alternatives exist and that's fine, this is why I have an Android phone, to be able to use third party alternatives if the options out of the box don't take my liking. With 8 you're not given the option and now that they have put the button back it's just a quick access back home and not the menu many are used to.

I should add, I already have Windows 8 machines here, I just work faster on those running Windows 7 for most if not all things.

I've seen many changes in both Windows and Linux distro's so just adapt pretty quickly, the key with any OS is to customise it to your needs once you know the OS and layout.

In a way I'm glad its gone, I mean we have had it for 18 years so was overdue, obviously they can improve on Windows down the road, but change and things removed is something you have to expect sooner or later, happens on both Windows and Linux.

:( cant disable/hide stupid start button which isn't really a start button, sad days. Probably wont even be enough demand for someone to release a third party plugin to hide it.
still not a biggy.
roll on Build so we can have a play.

  • New snap will be nice, is there a screen resolution list for the different options depending on your resolution, this will also make RT tablets even worse than they already are.
  • New sizes for live tiles is great, desktop applications I can make tiny. please let mail and weather apps make full use of this jumbo tile.
  • massive overhaul of xbox music and refocuse to your existing collection, yay it was functional but pretty crap.
  • improved search is always good, like the sound of the Hero search, have to see how that's implemented to see how useful it is, but that could be a great feature if done well.
  • improved photos app, might actually use it now, certainly the worst more useless app ATM.
  • revamped store sounds good and in background app update, will they actually include a list of updates on the app now? Like all other app stores, I hope so.

So looking pretty good.

The Start button and the seamless desktop/metro background (which I actually suggested a long time ago) are good additions for new users in my opinion and will make the transition easier.

I don't like the fact you can't get rid of the button, but to be fair I've pretty much been in the 'deal with it' camp with regards to the lack of one. So it cuts both ways and it's a minor issue.

The only thing that makes me uneasy about the seamless background is that it kind of encourages people to view metro as a 'layer' on top of the desktop. Which it really isn't. But again, minor issue.

If thats the case, sad times. Suffer because of these people. The desktop looks so nice without a start button. Now it's forced upon us all, all because these whingers are afraid of change.

I don't need two start buttons again. One on the keyboard is plenty.

Look at all the complaints from that same lot that whine it takes 3 clicks to shutdown.

I'm sorry, but the Start button complainers have spent the last 6 months being told to stop being dramatic and to get over it.

The people in the opposite camp now can't start doing exactly the same thing regarding its reinstatement.

I guess that's what all the buffoons asked for though, the start button back, they should have been asking for the start menu back, lol. Hopefully at some point you will be able to get rid of it again haven't missed it one bit.

Definitely this. Not being able to launch programs without blanking the whole screen with a bloat-load of childish icons is a chore. Ok W8 fans will obviously say "It's all the same, just make shortcuts on the desktop blah blah", but there's only so much you can bloat up the desktop and taskbar.

While watching a windowed video in MPC the other day all I wanted to do was open Notepad, Word, and the Calculator... Was a complete and utter pain in the arse...
Oh but the W8 fans will say: "But look at all these fantastic apps and you can snap FOUR apps on your screen! :D"
