Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

There's lots there for joe blogs, even if they aren't the main targets. Printing and wifi hotspot will be useful as would fingerprint, along with NFC and the accompanying networking introduction. Weve already seen NFC enabled docks for WP8 that supports it.

And I disagree, w8 has so much more to offer over competing mobile os, what they are lacking are these mobile settings and features that others have had for years, what they aren't lacking is the extra features. They are lacking the common features.

Which last one are you referring to?

I can't remember it but it was hardware and software from MS.

All I'm trying to point out is that MS have lost the mobile market now altogether UNLESS they do something new
something so out there it will pull users back to WM. I had a WM phone it was good but when android came out
with all their new stuff well it killed WM off for me.

And don't forget Ubuntu touch will be out soon so by next year there will be loads of android phones running both on the same phone.

"Printing and wifi hotspot will be useful" but it's used in android since day one so why would anyone move from Android to WM?

"Fingerprint" that's old hat any Android will do face recognition with out paying for it.MS only has 3% of the mobile market
android has 70% no way can I see MS doing something so good...so great I will buy back in to it.

Maybe they will prove me wrong. Lets hope.

They haven't lost it and I'm shocked they are doing so well, just imagine what they could do if they actually had
A) tablets available in more than one market
B) resonably priced tablets
C) in line with competitor spec tablets.

In q1 that actually shipped 7% of the tablet market, which I still can't get my head round. I would have thought it would have been closer to 1% as surface pro wasn't even available outside the Us and the rest where underspeced and over priced.

I just hope they learn and don't ***** up 8.1 launch like they did with win8. Availability, hardware and media ebpvents is where they really need to improve.

I'm pretty sure that's authentec software you're thinking about, unless we're talking waaay back.

Anyway the biometric stuff is nice to have but it's not something I use personally, even though I have a fingerprint reader on my laptop already.

If you're trying to differentiate yourself with an enterprise tablet in the market then a fingerprint reader wouldn't hurt.

The numbers are indeed surprising considering how limited the supply was (still is compared to the competition)

Well if I was leading the world mobile market by 67%(MS 3%) I wouldn't worry to much about WM

What MS have got to do is think of something that apple and android don't have and make it funky for the young guns.

Also they need to let people do their own custom roms ect. I just got a Chinese 5.7 inch phone with android 4.2 quad core
it's got a HD IPS screen dual sim 12mp camera loads of other features all for £170 inc. Why would anyone buy a MS phone that is less powerful?

I just hope MS does something fast.

Niche market.

Niche market.

True but the Chinese MTK6589 phones are selling droves and you can get a 5-6 inch 1920x1080p Exynos 4412 at 1.6\2gig of rom and 16gig of ram for £140!
But do you remember the Google G1? that started out as Niche ;)

I do hope that MS(anybody) comes up with new stuff\OS asap.

I really have tried to give Windows 8 a chance but every time I use I hate it even more.

e.g. trying to boot from a USB/go into the BIOS! Logging in, searching for BIOS/UEFI, going to another menu, choosing several options, restarting the computer and then choosing boot priority.

What was wrong with pressing delete/F2 in POST? I know it has this new fast booting but couldn't they have added a short pause at the start to allow further options? I believe shift & restart is only for safe mode?

Forgot to mention - even after choosing USB as main boot device it didn't work.

Well, the biggest pain is when you buy a PC or laptop with Win 8 on and then you decide you want to put in a new hard drive and you have to use a restore disc or USB drive to put the OS onto the new drive as the Product Key is hidden in the bios!

I tried to do it with my Win 8 DVD and it kept saying product key not right for media. Only way round for me was to do a recovery backup onto a USB stick and then boot from that with the SSD drive in the laptop. It then installed Win 8 plus all the rubbish by the laptop manufacturer!

What happens if i lose that image? I am stuffed?

Wasn't it even worth it.
Wow same pic on desktop and metro, although I'll probably will take advantage of that, is it really worth it in a vid. Put something slightly more exciting in.

Hi guys, here is a preview video of Windows 8.1. The stuff shown looks good to me in terms of improving the Modern UI which is good for my Surface tablet. Also I am pleased to here that RT is getting Outlook (not in video). I can pretty much ditch the laptop now.

Man that's better than I thought it would be. I can see me using that new search feature thing a lot.
And the inteligient multitasking thing is so simple but so nice.

Looks good, can't wait for the update :)

The MS Tablet looks really nice to use, shame they are so expensive :(

I agree. They need to get the hardware out there and at lower prices.I paid £700 for my samsung ativ 500t tablet and to me it was money well spent because I use it for everything except gaming but for lots of others £700 is really steep and it would fly off the shelves if it was £400 - £500

Your bios has nothing to do with Windows?

Hopefully the unified search will do away with having to click settings or files to access those categories. That's probably my biggest gripe and has been since the beta days.
