The pretty bodged Windows 8.1 preview launch? Given it's "available now" we're having a hard time.

Installing fine for me on RT so far from http://preview.windows.com although I have paused to do a USB recovery disk just in case. Actually haven't got as far as install yet so I may have got over excited - we'll see in a min.

It looks as though the ISOs will be available publicly tomorrow. In the mean time, they're available on the Technet and MSDN for those with subscriptions.

Edit: it doesn't seem to be possible to have a "local" account as per previous versions of Windows; I couldn't see an option to not sign into a live account.

If you're running Windows 8 and you don't use any of the 13 languages the preview is available in, you'll need to install using the ISO.

1. Place and rename the MSU file in an easily accessible place, e.g. C:\8preview\preview.msu
2. open command prompt in administrator mode.
3. Type: Expand –F:* c:\8preview\preview.msu C:\8preview\
4. Type: DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\8preview\Windows8-RT-KB2849636-x64.cab

anyone who's a bit more tech savy know if this will work?

Ok using the cmd method it seems to be working on my pc but I cant get past the bit where you put "Expand –F:* c:\8preview\preview.msu C:\8preview" on my surface rt.

It says unrecognized switch -F.

I tried in on my Surface and it did that fine, it's running the second part now, so it seems like it's working.

Now I just wish I had an 8.1 ISO for my PC.

I got messed up text in the store, but it downloaded fine for me and installed on x64
