Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

Woooooo all installed and activated....water mark gone after activation!! All great....

Had to reinstall My Marvell SAT drivers to get RAID working but all good....

Thanks all

Epic fail guys!!!! I added my Media Centre key that I got back when windows 8 first came out and that ruined my activation!!! Having to install all over again!! Hope my key still works....

u have to use that key above to install it then change the key to your own one to activate

Used the key that was on my pro by using magic bean key finder, all activated and ready to rock..

All I need now is drivers that support my Lenovo USB dock as the win8 ones don't work...:/

installing now thanks MOOGLEYS i had the wrong iso downloaded i had the english us version

Good stuff. I'm really liking 8.1 it has some nice improvements over 8. I'm even using the metro which I had hated with a passion before.

anyone know how to get rid of the water mark that says secure boot error

I tried a few things that did not work. In the end I just reloaded using standard raid drivers and disabled UEFI and Win fast boot.

So I have Win 8 pro with Media Centre, where can I download this, and can it be applied as an update?

Also, is this RTM or is it the officially released version?

It's the RTM that MS sends out to the manufacturers, so its as good as official until GA, yes there will be updates etc that will come with GA when it lands but the build number will be the same.
However its not officially released properly yet..

Any reasons why should I wait for the general release? And not just download the RTM now?

Am I right in what I am reading, this RTM build puts a build number on the desktop?

The build number goes once you activate....

But I would also like to know if RTM is fine forever and I will get all updates to bring it up to GA and beyond with re installing?

Build number goes when you activate.
RTM is the version that MS have sent out to people building machines NOW, if they were to change it outside of normally delivered MSUpdates I think they'd have a lot of pretty ****ed people on their hands..

The only thing "wrong" with installing this 8.1 is the fact its not been "officially" released GA by Microsoft, its the same version people on Technet and everywhere else have, all you are doing is getting it a bit earlier than you should.

A quick point though, just because you have drivers on Windows 8 doesnt automatically mean you will have drivers on 8.1 so be mindful of the fact you might have to dig around to get certain things...

The build number goes after activation unless there is a start up error detected then it is displayed with the error.

The build I posted above is 9600 which is the MSDN release and is final prior to a public release. Any updates would be applied as windows updates if anything is added to the public release but generally they stay the same.

The RTM is released before public to allow vendors to have machines loaded up ready to be sold on release day and save the hassle of updating prior to sale.

Fed up with Explorer 11 as flash player was flickering on flash based video unless I enabled active X filtering. Installed Chrome and now all ok.

I upgraded to Windows 8.1. There are a few things I don't like about it which were better in 8. Very small issues. I encourage everyone to try it out over version 8, so this is not an anti windows post.

1. The Explorer view with the cluster of folders on the left. Unhidden Libraries, but it's all just a big mess with everything listed alphabetical under 'This PC'.

2. The tiles screen. Now this more personal to me and won't effect most folk, but I like to run the DPI of windows at 110%. It helps my ageing eyes on my 2560x1440 monitor. On Windows 8 the tiles were extremely easy to read regardless of the DPI setting. Now they seem just too small (at medium) and far too big (at Large). Is there a change here or am I going mad?
