Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

clean install here as well as windows update option kepted failing at 48% got anoyed and clean installed got the secure boot water mark removed by enableing secure boot in my bios so now on to the reinstall of all my apps :(

1. The Explorer view with the cluster of folders on the left. Unhidden Libraries, but it's all just a big mess with everything listed alphabetical under 'This PC'.

Yeah I get this one as well, its annoying that they changed it, hopefully it'll be something that can be configured back to the 8 way of doing it..

Will the 8.1 ISO posted in here work with an Enterprise key when they are released on the 18th? I need to build an 8.1 machine at work but we obviously can't download it from the volume licensing site until 18th.

No, I tried an Enterprise key and had no joy, none of my keys worked that I have for Win8 Pro or Enterprise..

It's the RTM that MS sends out to the manufacturers, so its as good as official until GA, yes there will be updates etc that will come with GA when it lands but the build number will be the same.
However its not officially released properly yet..

Thanks Trig :) I'll hang on for the main release :)

Well I downloaded the Uk British ISO, and did a fresh install, used the Window 8 pro key provided on another page to install and all was fine.

I then activated using my own Windows 8 key and it activated.

I had a watermark stating that secure boot was not enabled so I rebooted into the bios and enabled secure boot.

Booted up my pc and then entered my Media centre key which worked, and the pc rebooted after installing the media centre update.

Now my pc wont boot into the bios or windows, I have tried resetiing the bios by removing the cmos battery but no joy, my keyboard no longer illuminates and the power light on my monitor just stays in standby.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z68 UD3XP rev 1, using the latest UEFI bios from gigabyte.

Help.

Managed to fix it, after several forced reboots a message popped up saying bios was corrupted and loading backup or something, anyway all fixed and running Windows 8.1.

Thanks for you help.

to boot in to the UEFI bios from windows, go to the Charms bar, click Settings, and select Change PC settings, select the General category and click the Restart now button under Advanced startup. click the Troubleshoot tile, then click the UEFI Firmware Settings tile which will take you to your computer’s BIOS.

I didn't know this, apparently in win8 purchased apps could only be installed on 5 computers, 8.1 the limit is increased to 81 systems. That might as well be no limit. Great news for anyone running lots of systems, especially going forward, for when they combine wp8 and w8 app stores.

Microsoft picked a really odd number for the total machines on which Windows users can install their apps, but 81 makes sense when you realize Windows 8.1 is just around the corner.
This new limit means that the company made good on its Build 2013 promise to increase the roaming app ceiling that's currently cutting off Windows 8 users at just five devices.
"We heard growing feedback from many developers and from our most enthusiastic customers that the limit of five was not enough for their needs," wrote the Windows Apps Team in an official blog post today.
"Developers asked for more flexibility in implementing their business models, and customers wanted to run those apps on the variety of tablets, laptops and desktops they owned."
It'll be a win-win situation for both Windows app developers and users starting on Oct. 9.

Just switched back to Windows 8.1 Enterprise X64. Got to say pretty impressed, have it running awesome. It's boots straight to desktop, with new start button, faster than Windows 7 with extra security.

Programs I recommend.

http://ninite.com/ (to install essential progs) Will grab latest versions of things like VLC player, Antivirus, Start menu button. Very handy.

Yamicsoft Windows 8 Manager, (Great for speeding everything up / streamlining, disabling some SSD setting to improve lifespan.

CCleaner, great for keeping PC running fast and clean.

These sort of programs are not really needed though these days and some people even tend to breaks their windows with them.

It's fine if you use the basic stuff, like anything if you start playing around deeply with registry files then yes you can break it,I have never had that issue because I just use the basic stuff,as to breaking Windows plenty of things can do that but nowadays Windows is quite robust if you use common sense with the tools you use etc...

Ironically only time I ever seen Windows break is with faulty hardware like ram(happened a few weeks ago) that corrupted my registry and sytem files.

Anyway CCleaner has been solid for me in almost 10 years of use.

CCleaner gives you free space back that uninstalling programs leaves behind, not a bad thing.

Installed 8.1 professional last night from 7, as it was free for uni students.

So far, looks nice, but don't really see the point. The tile screen is nice, but far too microsoft orientated. I want my google apps up there!

8.1's music app has changed from the preview, right clicking no longer brings up what you're actually listening to, that's a flipping stupid choice.
