Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

And you can multitask on metro anyway. He seems to like posting fud.
You can have two tasks running and in 8.1 4 tasks. Let alone a combination of metro and desktop.

It's not really effective multitasking if its one app full screen. And having two/four tasks running is a feature? It's like using a PC like a phone, it's a huge step backwards.

You have all your 30" screen filled up with one app, I can understand a very rigid windows management system when you're on limited screen estate, but desktop monitors are getting bigger and bigger, why limit use if all that space?

He's moaning that you can't multi task on the start screen... You never could multi task on start, merely launch but it appears that is irrelevant.

What? It's nothing to do with the start screen. This new app ecosystem is what I'm talking about, the one app per screen system is ancient and clearly tablet focused.

The start screen taking up your whole desktop is also retarded, but that's not what we're talking about.

its not full screen if you are running several metro apps is it, how can it be, more fud by you. It is far from a massive step back, as you have LOST ZERO and gained metro as well as many other features. Metro for media consumption wins hands down over the desktop. Desktop for work obviously wins, best of both worlds. Maybe once more apps get writte n and metro gets improvemnts then it will start having more and more uses, but even as it stands w8 is a huge improvement over w7, it gives you so many more options.

since when was it one app per screen  , its never been one app per screen and 8.1 is expanding dual app to 4 apps.

Exactly, it's super short so if you're a Mac user you're almost on a subscription model anyway unless you want an obsolete system. The security updates are arbitrary and incomplete for older versions.

Adobe is pushing that as it is. So many people sticking to CS6 with older cats incase it breaks with a newer OS. Even lots of people using Snow Leopard to this day.

It's one app per screen really though isn't it, with a side bar that you can't change the size of, and with quite a few of the apps I've just tried doesn't do anything useful when sat in the sidebar, for instance:

How is that a useful use of screen space?

Want to read your email and see your music player? Only if a massive chunk of your screen is used:

If you're using a decent sized monitor the flexibility of proper windows management is vital.

Today I actually cried because of Windows 8. An actual tear fell from my eye.

Seeing all these HUGE buttons. Swiping here, flicking that, hovering there.

Utter ****loads of space and time wasted in favour of dumbing down and simplification for the masses.

Oh wait but "windows will let you have 4 APPS" -- oh my gawd that's truly incredible!

Funny how people who've never been exposed to desktop/enterprise computing are swiping a few childrens pictograms around and calling themselves experts :D

Dumbing down for the masses. FML.

I know, I mean if they had just put a huge tile saying Desktop, that allowed you to do exactly as you where doing before, their wouldn't be any problems..ohh well...we can only dream I guess.

Meh. I don't even use Windows 8. I'm crying because of the laptop sitting in front of me sent from my client who requested me to "Make it easy to use like the last laptop". Like the 42 times I've had to do it before.

So, having the Modern UI in addition to the normal Windows desktop makes you counter productive?

All your Windows 7 apps that work exactly the same if installed on Windows 8 make it difficult for you to multi task?

Mountain - have you met molehill?

You can do everything in Windows 8 that you could do in Windows 7, but you also get the option in Windows 8 to try the new interface if you so desire and it fits your needs. If it doesn't fit your needs, you can pretty much ignore it.

*snigger*

:)

Exactly this. Everything has turned into a bloody app.

Would you rather I wrote 'Desktop Application'? I've been calling them Windows 'apps' since well before the cool kids with their overrated fruit based phones started oohing and aahing at the new touch wizardry.

:p

Eh? Surely that proves the point Minstadave pointed out. Look how bloated and padded out it is lol. :D

Sorry I've been working all night, that's sarcasm right? :P

lulwat? that screenshot pretty much refutes what you said about the sidebar being rubbish, the Skype8 app is so good it makes the W7 version look like something from the 90's (although to be fair, looking like something form the 90's in the first place doesn't help it :P).
