Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

Updated Mail app is much better now, pleased with that.

Can't quite get used to have that Start button there... feels weird since I haven't missed it for the last year.

If you have upgraded from Win 7 OEM to Win 8 via Microsoft, would I get the 8.1 update in the store ?

what's improved on the mail app? can it handle imap now and html signatures? i've always felt massively let down by window's mail app and gone with altneratives.

it's funny seeing it too, i like it though i feel i'm back onto windows again

Anyway to upgrade to 8.1 without having to go via the store? My store has been broken for months now and I can't be bothered doing a full re-install to get the damn thing working!

Anyone with an AMD switchable graphics laptop? I'm having an annoying time trying to get it to work again after updating to 8.1. I want to game on my 7670M, not the HD 4000...

Start screen feels all empty, only got half the screen filled, but got all i need on there. Got 4 screens on ipad, but there all stuff I've installed and not bothered uninstalling, I'm not an app whore. Only use about 10 regularly and that includes mail, safari and calendar.

I like the new mail app, apart from the big plane icons (mail, flag, folder) they're just to simple and or to big and bold)

Wait, so I can't just grab the new 8.1 iso and use my current key to install?

Where do I get an 8.1 key from then?

Or do I have to install 8.0 then upgrade to 8.1 (faffy).

There are generic 8.1 keys you can use to install and then just activate using your Windows 8 key, that's how most of us are using the leaked/MSDN 8.1 ISO's

According to HowToGeek:

"With Windows 8.1, these deprecated backup tools are no longer present. Windows 8.1 still allows you to import backup images created with Windows 7, so you can access your old files, but you can’t create a Windows 7 backup or a system backup image anymore. The advanced startup options menu no longer includes a “System Image Recovery” option to restore from a system image.

If you want to create a system image backup or restore from one, you’ll need to use third-party backup software."

This is pretty lame. There's always Macrium Reflect. You'll need to cough up if you want scheduled backups.

Just finished updating the missus' Acer laptop.
Touchpad driver ain't working, but my biggest bug bear is YTF does it need to leave behind a 3Gb Windows.old folder that I can't delete!! - grrrr

This is downloading so slowly and I have no idea at what speeds. Going to take a while.

I left mine running this afternoon while some friends came round for afternoon tea (you can tell I'm from the 'older' generation!) and by the time they had gone it was on to the installing stage with all sorts of amusing messages popping up, such as "Just sorting a few more things out for you now" but in the end it all completed painlessly, and my wife's first impressions (it was on her PC!) are very positive!

Off course you can delete it, same as any other version of windows(been the same since at least xp if not before), its protected.
All you need to do is charm bar >search >type "disk" > select: clear disk space by deleting unesacery files > clean up system files > select: previous windows installations then click ok.

Any one got the package tracking app, just tried the trial and its brilliant, shame its ~£2.50 ish, will be buying it though.

Oh and appflow is so much better than the store for browsing apps.

Well my upgrade from 8 to 8.1 on my laptop went fairly smooth via Store, had to reinstall my wireless key and it said I had to reinstall Microsoft Net Framework 1.1 (one of my print programs use it) but it failed to install twice near the end of installation, fix was simple ie remove Net Framework 1.1 folder ie delete it, then it installed fine,my print software program that uses it was fine since I tested it after.

So pretty smooth for me with a minor hiccup that I soon fixed ,anyway still quicker then doing a clean install for me

Using Disk Cleanup and got over 6GB back from the old Windows files no longer needed.
