Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

Well, I cannot be bothered to do a clean install

I'm on the same boat.

Microsoft really ought to copy Apple and just HAVE ONE FLIPPIN' VERSION of Windows.

Yes. I never have issues with OS X. It's such a dream OS for me at least. I used to upgrade Leopard to Snow Leopard to Lion and the OS was nearly as fast as a clean install. Once I went SSD it was a clean install of Mountain Lion.

It doesn't get any simpler. It's OS X and OS X server.

MS have got rid of upgrade version now so 8.1 u can only buy full version.

but those with win8 upgrade licenses (like I have) can still upgrade to 8.1 for free without buying a full license.

also your saying apple doesn't, but Microsoft isn't apple. its a totally different company and different ways of working things.

True but not for the best.

Ummm, that was not good.

It restarted and started to install, then a light blue screen came up and said there was an error something like 'irql not less or equal' then reverted back to to win 8. It is now trying to install again.

Edit it has just done the same thing again.

On the reboot I get the error code 0xC1900101.

Seems to be quite a common problem possibly with Nvidia drivers.

Edit #2: The problem could also be caused by ASUS network cards, is anybody else having the same problem and using an ASUS WIFI card?

Hi guys, just installed 8.1 from 7. I'm liking it so far!

The only thing I can't work out how to do it removing shortcuts from the apps screen (pressing down on the start screen) without deleting the shortcuts themselves. For example if I wanted to only display the shotcut to a program, not the program, its uninstaller and its readme. You know what I mean?

It must be possible, I'm just being slow!

Upgrade to 8.1 removed my tile shortcut to Google Chrome! Also removed my Sleep/Shutdown shortcuts that were quite useful since they decided to hide those away.

Not sure of the point in the new start button, and on mouseover it's pretty ugly.

Yet to discover some of the other changes/improvements other than being able to set backgrounds.

Right click on the start button. :)

Also I still have my Chrome icon (although can't really remember if I had one before, never really go into the start screen.

I thought the point in the start button would be that it would give the same functionality as right clicking in the corner previously, not switch back to the main metro screen...
Seems like sticking this start button there was a big FU from Microsoft...

Fair play I can still right click there to get said options, but what was the point?

Yeah the right click is what you get with Win+X, I was using that before anyway for a fast route to the control panel. Now I see the shut down commands though - I can live with that I reckon.

Has anybody experienced any issues with Windows Power Management?

I've got Win 8.1 set to Balanced, but for some reason the CPU will not auto clock down, simply remains @ the highest multiplier. (i7-4770K & GA-Z87MX-D3H mobo)
