Confirmed: Windows Blue Will Be Free, to Be Called 8.1

I had to uninstall the Steelseries engine also for my sensei Mlg edition and kept my on board profiles
Steelseries download page have advised the engine is not compatible with 8.1 :(

they say there working on it and they say they have been for the last few weeks trying to sort it ,we could be in for a wait

are you using cpuz or task manager to check?

Both.

Funny thing is I can get it to work in "Power Saver" mode but it just won't kick down in "Balanced" mode. (Issue with Power saver is that the CPU doesn't kick up enough)

Was all working fine under Windows 8, but 8.1 seems to be giving me issues.

Installed windows 8.1 the other day and just attempted to connect to my company's remote desktop service. Now this attempts to use the "Remote Desktop Web Client" which is basically remote desktop but through IE.

For some reason it wont use the web client, because of that it then attempts to use the Java console version which connects.

Any idea whats happened to the remote desktop web client ?

Thinking of upgrading my gaming machine to 8.1

What do I need to know?

In terms of firewall and antivirus, what do you guys use? At the moment on Win7 I use, MSE and Comodo free firewall.

Doesn’t Win8 come with an inbuilt antivirus? Is the inbuilt Win firewall/antivirus adequate these days?

Things like steam, origin etc... work flawlessly?

For a home user, I just need the 'Windows 8 Standard' edition?

Win8 has its own MSE ie built-in Defender,I use my hardware firewall via router so use the Windows default firewall which is ok,its all down to preference really.

Other free AVs that work fine are Avast 2014 or AVG 2014,I recommend you disable Defender if you use a third party AV,most third party AVs should do this anyway but better if you do it yourself before install of third party AV,I also use MalwareBytes anti-malware free version to run a free scan now and then.
Steam and Origin games are fine in my experience,I game a lot as well from oldies like XCOM-apocalypse ,Baldurs gate etc to modern games ie Skyrim,Witcher 2,Dishonored,X3,ME3 etc to name a few.

As to 8.1 or Pro version, check this list here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/compare ,bascially Pro gives you,
Provides enhanced data protection with BitLocker and BitLocker To Go to help keep your information secure.
Enables you to host a Remote Desktop Connection on your own PC so you can connect to it when you're using a different PC.
Allows you to join a domain so that you can connect to your corporate or school network.

Windows 8 ships with an acceptable anti-virus which will perform as good as any other. You need to keep on top of software patching, etc. This is key. Comodo is fine if you need more control over the firewall.

You should have a look at the Windows 8.1 mouse lag threads.

Basic version should be fine. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/compare

Standard version
is what I think I will get. As for mouse lag, I only play modern games, and I'm sure if it is a real problem, Microsoft will get it sorted asap.

I will just use the inbuilt Antivirus/Firewall then.

It looks like M$ has kept up with its attitude of taking necessary items out of the OS as they took out a video codec out of 8 which rendered one game I have unplayable unless I removed the file it couldn't play properly, and now they've taken another video codec and a font out of 8.1 breaking one game beyond repair and rendering a majority of the text in another game completely unreadable.

It looks like I'll have to start rooting through that windows.old folder to find what I can to try and get at least one of those games back in working order (at least I've got windows XP on another computer, so it isn't a total loss).

ok. I spend all last night trying to sort this.

I reinstalled win8.1 and didn't install anything but the issue was still happening. then I went back to win8 but the issue was still happening. then I checked my laptop which uses wireless and that is fine so then I connected a lan cable from my superhub 2 to my laptop and the issue was happening on that at the same time has it's happening on the main pc. I then put the SH2 in modem mode and it was fine no issue.

any ideas?

anyone

Has anyone seen the ADMX files for 8.1 out in the open yet? There's Technet articles referring to them being required to deploy start screen layouts but unhelpfully they don't provide any sort of information on how to get them.
