Conroe out July 23rd!!!

There's no benefit of running the RAM faster at async speeds is there? I'm aiming for a 333MHz bus speed, so getting the RAM to run 1:1 at that speed with something like 4-3-3-8 timings shouldn't be too hard... I hope!

I need more info on conroe and overclocking on intel boards (been with amd since duron 700).

What fsb will a conroe run on? Does it have a version of HT like 200x5 for A64?
How does memory relate to the fsb? I see ddr 667 but im like

TBH, i'm the same really.
I think Conroe will run stock at an FSB of 200, same as A64.
Soon as the ram arrives and i have had a play with this Yonah (basically mobile version of conroe - well silghtly less as it does not have all the cache and structure)

You wont get 333 1:1, i think the 6400 is stock 200mhz.... i'm really not sure till i get it.

I was sure the Conroe chips ran on stock 266fsb, the EE on 333fsb (both quad pumped to 1066 and 1333 respectively)

They don't have HT yet, their equivalent is on the cards but not for a few years IIRC

If it's anything like the P4 platform you should see a performance improvement by running the memory faster than the FSB

I guess since the memory controller is still external that would make sense...

All Conroe chips will be 266MHz this year, no 333MHz EE till next year afaik. The first EE will be 2.93GHz.

I should have been all ready for Conroe.

I have an Intel Brand I955 based motherboard
2x 1GB DDR2-667 (Kingston CL5)
I'm happy with my 7800GTX Graphics Card

If the I955 was Conroe ready (as it really did appear it would be) then I'd be laughing.
Just the CPU to purchase.
Unfortunately the impression I'm getting is that my motherboard won't take Conroe (although nothing official on that front until the CPU's are released).
It looks like it will be MB & CPU for me - at least I already have the RAM.

Unfortunately i955 doesn't support Conroe. You'll need either the new revision i975 or i965 chipsets.

except yonah isn't a mobile version of conroe, merom is, yonah is the 65nm dual/single core version of the dothan core, i mean i believe its pretty much the same thing perhaps with SSE3 and EM64T. look at it this way yonah are faster than AMD X2s, im not seeing an enormous improvement in going conroe for someone who already has a yonah to play with

Yes agreed.... its main difference, i think, is cache and not being 64 bit...
I expect to just get a memron in due course

Some info on pricing -

Intel's upcoming 'Conroe'-based Extreme Edition Core 2 Duo processor will ship with the model number X6800, it has emerged, courtesy of the latest roadmap leak from the chip giant. And it will be pushing the Core 2 series at the same price as current Pentium processors.

According to slides posted on Chinese-language site HKEPC, the 2.93GHz chip will be branded the Core 2 Extreme and will be priced at $999, the standard price point for new Intel gaming-oriented CPUs.

Indeed, the whole Core 2 line-up - Duo and Extreme - will come in at prices matching what Intel already charges for its current Pentium processors. Clearly, it will be pushing hard to encourage take-up of the next-generation architecture chips.

The X6800 operates on a 1066MHz frontside bus and contains 4MB of L2 cache shared by both processing cores - much like regular Core 2 Duo parts. The Duo and the Extreme are set to ship on 23 July.

The 'Allendale' processor makes its appearance on the roadmap, as the Core 2 Duo E6300 and E6400, both with 2MB of L2 cache and clocked at 1.86GHz and 2.13GHz, respectively.

The arrival of the Conroe will be accompanied by price cuts which will be applied to members of the Pentium 4 6x1 and 5x1 series. The Celeron D 3xx family will also see its prices cut, as will a selection of Pentium D 8xx and 9xx parts.

Other 8xx and 9xx chips will experience price cuts on 4 June, the leaked slides claim. ®

I just hope I can get E6600 + X1900xt + "Insert good OCing Mobo" + Antec 180 + Antec Phantom 500W + 2GB "Insert Good DDR2 to go along with OCing" + Zalman Flower + Zalman 900 for under £1400...

Think the DDR2 is actually gonna cost more than the CPU? 'cos that'll just be too much.
