console loyalty

If i get a next gen console it will be the PS4. I prefer the controller, the games and the fact online is free. (hoping it stays this way...)

I think a lot of brand loyalty boils down to a console you first owned. I got a NES for Christmas in 1990, which could have easily been a Master System. I was only 6 at the time but Mario and co stuck with me. So then the SNES became a logical choice, as opposed to the Mega Drive. Also, as a child, you're limited by what your parents can afford - so of course the next was an N64.

By the time the Dreamcast and Gamecube were available, I had a bit of financial freedom so I had both.

As an adult, but with a limited amount of money, I have to make choices so loyalty plays less of a role. I bought a PS3 when the slim was released as my brother had a PS3 so it made most sense to play, for free, with him. Bluray was a big bonus. I will by no means buy a PS4 over the next Xbox if it's not as good. I may not buy either.

I am unashamedly unable to not buy a Nintendo console, despite a dearth of games for the Wii U at present. Even the wife knows this, so she bought my Wii U for Christmas this year. I suppose I value playing the next instalment of the games I enjoyed so much growing up outweighs the console's popularity.

I have both 360 and PS3, however I'd say I'm more loyal to the Xbox just because it has games I want to sit down and play, and I prefer Xbox Live to PSN. I managed to get a few years of Xbox Live for £1/month a while back, and I play plenty of online so I get my moneys worth.

I prefer the Xbox controller, and that's partly the reason why I hardly play on my PS3. It's a great Blu-ray player though!

I'll also be buying the new Xbox and PS4. I imagine I wont get PS4 at launch though, unless it has some really, really good launch titles (that aren't just showing off hardware potential).

I've owned every other Playstation so I'll be getting the next one, even though I only use my PS3 for occasional games of GT5. Previous to that I owned three generations of Sega hardware only to jump on the Playstation band wagon when the Saturn was going to be £100 more and not many games in development at the time compared to Sony's machine.

Never owned a Nintendo or Microsoft console.

Never owning a Nintendo console

I wasn't aware these types existed :D

Only messing mate :)

I will probably remain loyal to Sony and pick up a PS4 at some point although I doubt it will be at launch after my experiences with the PS3. (High price, lack of games, reliability problems, ect)

I will at probably get the Next Xbox once it is fairly established and has plenty of good exclusives behind it. I did the same with the 360.

Although this is very much subject to change depending on what happens between now and launch.

I highly doubt that I get a Wii U or its successor as so far most of the games for it just don't interest me.

My kids had a GameCube and an N64, which usually meant me helping out with some of the tougher levels in Mario games. I have played Super Mario Bros 2 in the arcades back in around 1986. But other than Mario games there's not been anything on Nintendo that could justify me owning a Sega machine and a Nintendo machine at the same time.

I've never really had brand loyalty when it comes to consoles. I don't really have any interest in the Xbox 360 simply because most of the games don't really interest me, whereas all the PS and Nintendo exclusives.

I had a SNES, Megadrive, Playstation and even an Amiga when growing up, and I bought subsequent consoles based on the games that were on it. I had a PS2 and GC for again, all the exclusives, and I ended up getting a cheap second hand Xbox for about £30 for a few of the Xbox games that I'd missed (mainly the Oddworld ones).

Have both 360 and ps3 and like both, but as time went on and I still had a gaming pc, the games just started getting uglier and uglier in comparison.

I think I may get both again, but not straight away, and if I keep from upgrading my pc, eventually games on console will look better than what my pc can render and I can hopefully retire from pc gaming.

Now just need the strength to keep from upgrading pc :D

Hopefully both will have backward compatibility so that I don't need to keep the current consoles, but I am not sure I see that happening - not in the case of ps4 anyway.

All things being equal me and friends will be sticking with XBOX. But if PS4 offers a better experience then we'll all jump ship. So no loyalty from me.

I hope MS announce something soon at least then people will have an idea of what to expect. I still think MS are going to push it as a hub for the living room with all the voice activation etc and still push the Kinnect, none of which appeals to me :( they'll still have Forza and Halo though so it's a must buy for me anyway but if I was having to choose one then I would certainly not make a decision at this stage as I have a feeling Sony are going to cater for the gamers more.

I am almost the opposite to you. I use my PS3 almost exclusively as a media player and an xbox with blueray (but still good games obviously) will send it to silicone heaven.

I'm likely to end up with both but ps4 will be bought first.

I never had a Sega or Nintendo console as a child, I had the Amiga 500 and went from there to the ps1 (was amazing back then) and multi play PC gaming. Have stuck to that as my core gaming as I enjoy Sony exclusives. Normally pick up other consoles to dabble now, had all the hand helds bar Vita and all the main consoles this gen.

Next Gen may be the first gen where no console interests me. Sad times

I have the same opinion currently but may change my mind once all the consoles have been fully revealed.

I would tend to stick with Sony but may choose to go with Xbox depending on price difference if I did get a console.

so why all the loaylty?

I've never understood it either. I play games, not systems.

Where the good games are is where I will go, and if they all have good games to play i'll happily grab every system.

To further answer your question, I think it's some kind of carry over from childhood going through to being a young adult. The need to compete with others, people are even competitive with their opinions, it's simply part of being human to thump our chests and shout our loyalty out.

Clearly it doesn't stand up to rational or objective diagnosis, clearly it's ridiculous to blindly follow anything out of sheer ignorance. Just don't expect it to go away this side of being human and it won't frustrate you.

Currently have 2 ps3's, one hooked up to a 55" 3d tv in the lounge for the blu-ray option and another in the spare room (man cave) for gaming :) defo gunna be a day 1 purchase of ps4 because a like there exclusives over MS ones baring Forza, had an Xbox 360 but turned out to just be an expensive beer mat n seen the power on button used a couple times but always went back to ps3.... Its not really a loyalty thing caus am just a gamer that likes playing games n rarely go online with browsers and what not so those things dont interest me.. Am early 30's and grew up with the NES/Master System era and loved both for Mario/Sonic games then the ps1 came out and blew me away with there games like C+C and Destruction Derby, loved those games! Am not really a big online gamer either and feel everything about consoles is aimed at online play these days but find ma playing experience online just doesn't match my offline sesh's... Cant be bothered with little kids screaming and arguing, maybe am getting older and less tolerable of numptys online?! Also I see gaming as a chilled/relaxing moment after a busy day enjoying a beer and that doesn't happen if company's keep pushing the daft jumping around of the kinect n Wii generation of consoles.... Bottom line...... If a games good, a can chill out n enjoy the moment... Am gunna buy that console :)

I had the Xbox this gen but I think I'll be going for the PS4 next gen, mostly because I tend to prefer the exclusives the PS gets. I much prefer the Xbox controller though, was the main reason I went for the 360 over the PS3.

I've never had any loyalty to any console, I currently own a Xbox, Wii, 3DS and Vita and I'm thinking I might grab a secondhand PS3 soon so I don't miss out on all those exclusives, and so I can get the most out of my PS+ subscription as I can only get the Vita games at the moment. I'm definitely going to be getting a Wii U too when some of the big name titles are being released (Zelda in particular).
