Contactless payments to increase to £100 from 15/10

I'm not sure where you live but even our local fruit and veg stool has entered the 21st century and accepts contactless. Infact a lot of stores have signs up saying "no cash" due to COVID etc.

Even the local Chippies accept card payment now and they seemed to be the one industry still making a last stand.

What's even better is that most of them use the cheap terminals like Square/IZettle which accept Amex :)

Esp with those will have no idea how to cancel cards.
Are you for real? After reading all your posts in this thread I'm starting to think you're some kind of fake troll account.

Here's how you cancel your lost card easily.:
YOU PHONE THE CARD ISSUER.

Some banks even let you do it on the app, it really couldn't be much easier.

Only issue I'd see is a lost/stolen card could now cost you £100 from a single tap.

If my limit increases to £100 I will likely drop it to £50 on my account, it's fairly rare I spend more than that in one transaction when out and about (most bigger purchases are done online including the weekly shop)

good idea, not sure if i can do that with my bank
i might drop it to £50 and if i need to go higher i can do that

Problem is they get fleeced on the rates using iZettle & Sumup.
1.75% which is passed onto the consumer for the convenience. And they don't have to pay a staff member to go and cash in at the bank (hours wage saved).

The only folk against it are those who take their cash in hand cut.

I’m no troll. I seriously doubt how my 93 year old grandmother will know how to do this. I know a few people who hate talking to call centres. Plus she’s one of these people who don’t ask for help, struggle. Then if one of us suggested something which she likes.

Just don't like the idea of getting in to debt. My only debt is my mortgage.
Flip your perspective around and rinse the finance companies. Get a rewards credit card, only spend what you would anyway, pay the DD in full and start getting them to pay you.

It's the sensible option. You just use it as a debit card effectively. Buy as normal with it, gain rewards and then pay it off in full.

Although a lot of the rewards are heavily reduced these days but i still get ~£300 a year from my Amex cashback.

Unfortunately I would imagine that she is in the minority when it comes to consumers who use contactless debit card payments regularly.

Not sure what you use for non-AMEX transactions but I am very happy with an Amazon card for all Amazon purchases (getting a silly amount of my income each month now :o) and a BarclayCard with Freedom Rewards for non-Amazon. The BC recently added specific cashback offers as well, a bit like AMEX offers, which are pretty decent.

No point requesting one here because of the demographic but I wonder what the results of a poll would look like with regards to phone vs card.

I would suggest speaking with her bank, make it clear she is a vulnerable person. Highly likely they can issue a non contactless card OR you can disable it through the banking app (you can on Barclays)

I imagine most use whatever they have to hand - some times its my wallet with card, sometimes its my phone. I might even on occasions use my phone for over £45 with Barclays if that's all I have on me.

I just have a debit card linked to Curve generally.

I spend around £400 a month on average at Amazon so having an Amazon specific card makes sense, but with my Amex giving me 2-3% due to the Vitality booster any non Amex spend is pretty minimal.

Ah snap yes I do remember you saying.

The Amazon one is good but feels less exciting end of year, as the cashback is issued in vouchers at the end of the billing period rather than in one big lump. :o

I have lost my Vitality Health Insurance though through a job change so sadly it has dropped a little :(

When i'm back from Spain i think i might look at some kind of rewards credit card though. Even for the little i spend on it, it makes sense to get some benefits.

My bank app alerts me within a few seconds on my phone when a card payment is done so, if my card was ever stolen and used without my knowledge, I would get alerted and I could then block the card on the app as well.
