Controller versus mouse and KB

Pair up an extremely good console player using his control pad and a mediocre player with a keyboard/mouse.

Pit them in a FPS game and see what the scores are like. Certain input devices just aren't ideal for certain games...

Here we go again...

Your fast frag games like Quake, Doom, Unreal all work better with a mouse\keyboard.

I much prefer slower paced games like RB6Vegas, GRAW, CoD2 on a gamepad.

Some games feel more immersive with a gamepad, whilst other twitch reaction games need the speed of the mouse.

Please no more PC v's Console threads for gawds sake lol.

Same situation but both players are laid back on the sofa.....then see what the scores are like :). The majority of console gamers dont want to be hunched over a desk.

Living the dream isnt it! I used to get back and neck ache while playing BF2 and CSS , no problem with that on me sofa :D

Also, in answer to the OP, how about this. A controller is better for FPS games  . Now you will be thinking, jesus! PUT THE CRACKPIPE DOWN BENGABOY! But hear me out 1st lol.

In halo 2 for the pc, i read that one thing that made using a pad while playing multiplayer awesome and gave you the upper/equal hand was the lock on. And i think future games that use the pc xbox360 controller (like halo 2) will have this feature.

So ok, maybe not better i was wrong, but certainly equal....ish... :)

Halo 2 pc could use controllers or kb\mouse. That being said autoaim was enabled to a severe extent for the pad.

Halo 2 PC is another game that really wasn't good. The Xbox version was far superior, the PC version always felt like it lagged behind any movement made on the mouse. Such a waste of £30 :(.
However, in that case a controller was optional, everyone has a mouse and keyboard.
You could use a controller on any PC game, what I am on about is that you simply cannot compare as thus far, only Shadowrun ( a poor game ) has had M&K vs Controller.

My argument is that people who write off a control pad as a poor control method don't know what they are talking about, or that they simply aren't proper gamers, and in most cases it's both.

Does it get a lot easier the more one plays or is it just the nature of controllers to be harder to target the enemy?
thanks
I was a controller doubter before I moved away from pc gaming to the 360. Obviously the speed and sheer response isn't there but I appreciate using the controller a lot more. FPS titles like CoD aren't hard at all, and that's with the auto aim crap switched off.

Like what? Auto aim?

Analogue movement, which is far better than using a keyboard, triggers, rumble. Aiming tends to be slower which gives shooting a more measured, often more realistic, feel. You line up your rifle, lead the shot, take your time etc. The same scenario with a mouse and keyboard would likely end in a quick and easy twitch shot - very different. I'm not saying that either is better btw, just that it's not hard to understand why some people prefer the former for certain types of fps.

I'd like to point out that i've played in pc clans for years and years now and know full well the benfits a m&k setup offers, yet would still choose a pad over a mouse in any fps that focussed on slow, tactical play, or if it was an immersion driven single player title. At the end of the day, the people who often criticise using a pad in fps are those that are crap with them and have absolutely no idea how good they can be.

no matter how good one get to be on the pad, i still can't shake the fact that you can't turn around with a flick of the wrist. and all the speed that comes with using a mouse

But why would you need to?
I understand in games such as Unreal Tournament, Counter-Strike or Quake 3 and that's never been doubted.

Warbie is dead-on-balls accurate with what he's said there.

because playing against others online 16 v 16 or more, you need all the speed you can get, need to watch your back at all times. no matter how well i know a map, always wise to check behind you now and again, holding that stick down and wait for it to turn will get you kill. and auto aim! i never knew such thing existed! ha!

I hate autoaim with a passion. Being a PC gamer I naturally go for the head in FPS's, but on consoles the auto aim buggers you over so you can't really do it. Autoaim usually moves the curser to the opponents chest, well...on most of the console FPS's I have played anyway. But anyhow, it moves the cusrer towards the enemy in some way. For example, if you see an opponent moving sideways and you want to shoot just next to their head to compensate for their movement, you can't. The autoaim buggers you over again.
