Controller versus mouse and KB

because playing against others online 16 v 16 or more, you need all the speed you can get, need to watch your back at all times. no matter how well i know a map, always wise to check behind you now and again, holding that stick down and wait for it to turn will get you kill. and auto aim! i never knew such thing existed! ha!

And what game would that be?
PC games are made to be used with a M&K, Console games are made for a controller. Any game that's made from the ground up for a specific device works well.

Battlefield 2 on the PC is outstanding with a M&K, but Battlefield 2: Modern Combat on the Xbox360 works excellently with a controller.
The controller wouldn't work on the PC, but the M&K would feel crap on a console.

I hate autoaim with a passion. Being a PC gamer I naturally go for the head in FPS's, but on consoles the auto aim buggers you over so you can't really do it. Autoaim usually moves the curser to the opponents chest, well...on most of the console FPS's I have played anyway. But anyhow, it moves the cusrer towards the enemy in some way. For example, if you see an opponent moving sideways and you want to shoot just next to their head to compensate for their movement, you can't. The autoaim buggers you over again.

You could always go into the options and turn auto-aim off...
I'm yet to see a game where you can't.

Does it get a lot easier the more one plays or is it just the nature of controllers to be harder to target the enemy?
thanks
Controllers are just plain rubbish for aiming, hence so many console games have auto-aim. It takes far longer to spin round on a controller and there's very poor precision. While you do get better at it with practice, it never compares to a mouse.

Halo 3 feels absolutely great on controller, i don't think i would like to play it with keyboard and mouse, i honestly cant put my finger on why though...

If you have played FPS for a long time on PCs, FPS on a pad never feels right.
Only Console that has won me over with an alternative to the Keyboard and Mouse is the Wii with its version of Resi 4.

I remember getting absolutely brutalised on Goldeneye on the N64 by someone who'd taken the time to practise and get good with it. I couldn't believe anyone could be that good without using a mouse.

I also used to get spanked at Halo on the Xbox, but I soon got good enough (like, within a couple of hours) to give my mates a run for their money.

I think you'll find the vast majority of people who don't play fps with a joypad have no idea how good or accurate someone practised with a pad can be. You could edit most of the replies in threads like this with 'i'm no good with a pad so can't comment' and things would be a lot closer to the truth.

Console single player is fine with a pad, hell, PC FPS is fine single player with a pad. Purely because the computer enemy attacks from 1 direction only, and as you move through the map, you clear the area behind you and most of the time you just have to worry about what's in front of you.

Online multiplayer is a different ball game, with spawn points constantly changing, unpredictable location and number of enemies around every corner. You have to be quick with your movement, I am sure most people here have played in a clan on online FPS on the PC, I don't need to spell it out for you to know how quick a mouse can be use for turning and aiming and how slow (in comparison) the pad is.

Don't I recall a few years ago a bunch people hacked their way into Quake online on the Dreamcast with their PC and totally wipe the floor with the Dreamcast users ?

I don't mind the 360/Xbox pad for FPS games, big downside is pinpoint aiming with snipers, it's just harder.

The PS2/3 pad is a different story though, I hate that controller for FPS games so ******* much.

Yes but then you're gimping yourself against everyone else who has "easy" mode on.

Yep you can get good with a pad and fps can even work well with a pad, but the core mechanic of aiming is done so much better with a mouse.. its just no contest. The only advantage of a controller is so you can chill out on a sofa.

This is talking about fps of course.

I can't play FPS games sitting down on a sofa, it feels weird. :D

Christ i cant believe you geeks in here are always arguing about which is better keyboard/mouse or a gamepad. Personally i like both but on the 360 seeing as you cant used a keyboard/mouse the controller works perfectly fine...in fact im pretty much used to it and i find it quite easy to play an FPS with the 360 controller.

I think if i went back to mouse and keyboard id probably have trouble now.

It depends on the game. In CSS I use a very low sensitivity (between 0.9 and 1.1) and it takes a sweep of a large mouse mouse mat to turn 90 degrees. Turning in a modern console fps is probably a little quicker as they all have high acceleration these days. For other shooters I use a higher sensitivity - it all depends on the game in question.

The only type of fps that really need a mouse, imo, are the Quake/UT - backflipping, spinning railgun headshot across the map - type games. Speed is everything and a pad just isn't quick enough. For every other fps, turning with a pad hasn't been an issue in the slightest. I think years of pc twitch gaming that has instilled the belief that being able to spin on a penny is required to play properly - it just isn't true. Infact using a mouse has turned some shooters from tactical teambased games into run and gun tdm - CoD2 being a good example of a game that is superior when played with a pad. The same is true of Halo.

It's not a case of which is better - both methods are suited to different styles of fps.

.
It may be quicker on some games but it's more awkward to aim after having performed a fast turn.

It's like Team Fortress 2, you just won't be able to run around so fast as a Scout while turning around and aiming so easily with any controller.

Also I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say using a controller has a more realistic and immersive feel. When I play an FPS with a keyboard and mouse it's almost like I'm holding a gun with my mouse hand, when using a controller it just feels like I'm simply moving a crosshair around the screen with a joystick.
