Core 9000 series

Properly delidding this thing for a decent temp drop, involves scraping off the indium solder and then lapping the silicon to reduce the height of the package.

You could do it without the lapping but according to der8auer the height of the silicon is one of the issues causing so much heat.

Can we all take a moment to appreciate AMD's engineering here? i mean really... they produced an 8c 16t soldered chip without these ridiculous thermal issues that the 9 series has, also at half the price?? how is that not a masterpiece compared to this tripe Intel are shovelling out?

Yes AMD might not clock as high and yes they are behind a little in IPC, but this latest 9 series just seems a desperate attempt to try and be a "Me Too".

Yep according to him, he thinks the thickness is due to needing to support the Solder... hence he said "We are victims of ourselves, we asked for Solder and this is what happens" basically to make sure the chip is stable under solder they increase the pcb thickness but also increase the thickness of the silicon, which has a much worse thermal conductivity level than the Copper its sat on, and then the Iridium sat ontop of that is even worse still, but better than standard grease.

So the heat has to fight through a thicker silicon level than the 8700k, infact double the thickness, and then the solder etc... but they had to double up the thickness of the Silicon to take the pressure etc of the Solder sat ontop of it.

It's a knee jerk reaction cpu at best, super gluing in 2 more cores and throwing solder at it to hope that solves the thermal issues. And for the £620 price tag you get a cpu and a fancy box and...nothing else. Could they not have incorporated an aio into the bundle?

looked at 4k and hardly any difference - though i expect e-sports to be set up with 240hz 1080p and 9700ks running 5.2ghz as intel dominate the e-sport scene

I think the reviews have it all wrong, they need to get the guy from the verge pc build video and have him apply the thermal paste, then all will be well :)

You're aware it could be run at 4.4-4.5 all core at a lower voltage and much less heat and still out perform without ram issues no doubt? It's doing things the AMD chip can't. That comes at a cost with a side of heat. Not knocking AMD, but this is basic stuff come on.

Id like to see the benchmarks of it run at those settings to be honest, to see how it performs.

Yeah we know but let us have our fun... The picture with the child and house on funny was pretty good. As far as I'm concerned if you buy a I9-9900k for 600 quid you;re saving yourself 400 quid when you no longer need to replace the boiler.
