Core 9000 series

I would imagine the i7-5820K would last more than 2 years unless the current pace of core count increases continues and games readily use 10-12 cores by then. Who knows how fast that kind of change will happen on the software side.

Also, how long a setup "lasts" depends on the person. I still don't have a reason to upgrade my ancient rig so I know in your position I'd go for the i7-5820K option you had. Others might not.

Fair point. It's solely reliant on Adobe, in my scenario. My rig has struggled to keep up with the recent few Adobe update cycles. That, accompanied with heavy use of artboard based layouts and massive file sizes, and the system is struggling.

I'm not so fussed about games, to be honest. I run a 1440p 60hz IPS screen, so high FPS isn't a massive concern. If I do have a game which struggles, I'll happily sacrifice graphic quality.

They appear to need to get enough of them first, which might be why it is all cloak and daggers at the moment.
Maybe yields are truly awful, and they are gimping loads of 9900 into 9700 to get product to launch.

So what are we expecting with these? Is the 9700k going to be the go to gaming CPU with the 9900k being too expensive to justify just 8 hyperthreads. I can't imagine any game will show a difference between 8/8 and 8/16 assuming everything else is the same. How are we expecting the 9700K to stack up against the 8700K?

The i7 will make a great gaming chip with the i9 being a drop in upgrade 2-3 years later.
