COVID-19 (Coronavirus) discussion

There are two places I have been told to take off my mask. The dentist so they can look and work in my mouth and at the hospital while sucking on gas.

Anyway people that complain about wearing masks are just being self centred even if it is just to make people think everything is okay, while people are again coughing without covering their mouths.

If people want to socialise with out masks thats fine but if you go to places that there might be people that dont socialise maskless because they need to stay safe for those around them then they should have the decency to wear masks.
Wearing masks between entrance and dentist chair.

Next time I go to the doctors, need a mole on side of face needs looking at. They need to remove mask as mole is on mask zone

You are complaining, saying people should be wearing masks in public settings. Surely you follow your own advice.
You have a thankless task. Fresh air is good for you. I walked past a man on Monday wearing a mask outside in 37c heat and he was breathing heavily. He would have been better off taking the thing off.

Taking the mask OFF?! Pure madness. He'd be signing his own death warrant.

No where. We are all dismayed by the lack of focus from the Government. Ultimately though it appears that the public have decided its not a problem anymore, despite the rising cases and continued high number of deaths per capita. I was in Auckland city centre for work the other day I heard a guy in his late 20s bemoaning needing to test and was telling his mate 'you only have covid if your testing and its positive'... this is a common position many of our younger people hold that as they don't believe it will affect them, they don't care even though we've had a number of children below 10 die recently too.

Ultimately the people spoke and the government listned to popular opinion rather than scientific fact... It also hasn't helped that the opposition are opposing things for the sake of it that there was no unity in the political spectrum to carry us through...

Every society reaches a point where they can't take any more of restrictions. As 200sols said above, they got through the worst of it with few deaths compared to other nations. Its with us forever now and we've just got to live with it and be careful going forward if any nasty variants come our way.

Their deaths are still very low in comparison. I guess they didn't capitalise on the vaccines as well as they could have? Or have they? 0 COVID is such a daft strategy, there will always be a surge depending on variants from what I've seen.

Oh new Zealand evangelists where art thou?

What on earth are you dribbling on about now

UK deaths - 182,000 : 2,663 / 1M population

NZ deaths - 1,911 : 382 / 1M population

Oh, you're getting your opinion from the Daily Mail, explains everything.

This is a bit skewed I think, it was essentially the government that decided it was all over, they shutdown everything covid related and have not mentioned it since.

we have just seen another peak with variant b5 ..this will always be here now .. what will variant b6 bring ? but it makes me wonder .. took them 6 months to get the first jab (as there still using this for boosters ).. but nothing since yes i know it's mutating at a fast speed .. but still ??
if it wasn't already are they turning it into population control ? getting rid of the over 50's (my age) ?

Yes, but in reality the population had already decided they had had enough and the opposition was fully on board with this and playing it up. Working and living in Auckland it was clear from my colleagues and others that they had had enough of lockdowns and the covid protection and that Labour had gone too far etc. You could see that with the polling for the PM and the party massively dropping earlier this year after Luxon took over the reigns of the National Party although it has swung back again more recently.

NZ politics is highly popular based really due to the highly opposing natures the major parties.

Anywho, this is probably not quite necessary for this thread as NZ is half a world away from the UK.

Ah, sorry I thought you were talking about the UK, though it's not dissimilar turn of events. :)

Nearly a week now after testing positive last Sunday. Fever and aches gone but still get out of breath, intermittent cough especially at night and feel lethargic. Taste and smell have gone also, just brushed my teeth and the toothpaste tasted like boot polish.

You wear a mask mainly to protect others from you spreading the virus, it also stop you getting a full face full of others.

Not really, that applied previously to basic cloth masks etc.. which are pretty useless now. You wear an N95 to protect yourself and you make sure it fits, I think that's what the other person was referring to re: masks not fitting properly.

Hospital staff can work on covid wards because they wear masks like that, the patients don't always have masks or might take them off to eat etc.

New Zealand vaccination rates are 96.3% for the first dose, 95.2% for the second dose and 73.3% are boosted vs 93.3%, 87.5% and 69.7% respectively in the UK (I am not entirely sure whether the percentage boosted in the UK is measured as a proportion of the total population over 12 or of those eligible as in New Zealand).
