Crucial M4 010G firmware update

The firmware update page mentions UEFI but only in the context of the firmware updater sometimes not recognising the drive as being eligible for an upgrade, it doesn't (as far as I can see) talk about the drive disappearing completely from the BIOS after it had successfully been patched to 010G. :(

Yep. You are right. That's what's confusing and the cause of everyone's pain. At the end of the day the "proof is in the pudding". Anyone who has a UEFI bios who has reverted back to 000F has solved their issues.

I'm trying to workout if I should go to 000F or 010G - I just want whichever bios fixes the potential freezing issue after 5200hrs runtime. I've read loads of complaints regarding 010G so I'm thinking 000F is the answer.

I am sweetly running Windows 8. Having read the firmware update page, I decided to go from to 000F or 010G. No problems so far. Benchmarks show a slight increase in read speeds, but still slower than previously in Windows 7. Oh by the way, boot up time has improved.

My Crucial M4 has been running for around 4 months now.
No problems.
I see no need to make any "upgrades" to the firmware.
If it ain't broke...why fix it?

This. Installed 010G on a drive that had no issues and surprise surprise the system crashed after some data transferring and disappeared from the BIOS. Thankfully I was able to revive it and downgrade the FW back to the previous version, no issues since then. Obviously not everyone will get problems and this is the first M4 FW that has caused me issues but even so, if it is working fine I personally wouldn't flash the firmware. I often don't practice what I preach, but from now on with SSD FW I will... lol!

Because it gives improvements. Are you still on XP as well?

Improvements most people won't see in real world applications and there is always a risk involved as above.

What sort of improvements are we talking about here?
Reading the earlier parts of thread indicates that this firmware can result in slower performance and it might actually be buggy.

I believe that the firmware I have currently have is extracting (near) maximum performance from the hardware. I'm sure that Crucial might be able to extract a further 1-5%...but this improvement wouldn't be noticeable without benchmarking software.

As the 2 posts above mine have stated....no point in updating if everything is working perfectly.

And I am currently using Win7. The reason for this is that Win7 IS a better OS than WinXP. The same cannot be said about the latest Crucial M4 firmware (compared with the older firmware).

Have I answered the question to your satisfaction?

Thankfully I have managed to go back to the old firmware by popping the M4 in my wife's laptop. It would not downgrade from my PC. After it sort of died on me from a S3 sleep I have vowed to not update it again if it is working.!

I didn't spot you only had the drive 4 months so should be a on reasonable firmware already. The previous ones gave a big gain in performance.

Thinking of picking up another M4. I have been looking at the Intel 520 and Samsung 830, which on paper seem to be faster according to benchies.

Thinking of picking up the M4 simply becuase am familiar with it.

Is there a noticable difference between these SSD's?

Not in my experience in normal day to day use, I couldn't tell the difference between my laptop running with a 3gb/s SATA interface, and at 6gb/s after I upgraded the BIOS. Or with it running a Samsung 830 or a M4.

Bottom line, SSDs are fast! :)
